This book has many elements of the Starforce and Undying Mercenaries series. And that is all just awesome. We have the rookie leader who is bad ass. We have his love interest. We have the bad ass side kick. And of course, we have the hyper intelligent scientist role. (Hello Marvin-esque guy!!!). And we take those roles and just throw them into the blender of the space opera!!Usually it is humanity vs some alien force. This is humanity vs itself! And it is a clever twist on these types of stories.Lots and twists and turns in this one! And they are grounded and well thought out! It is great!Book 2 is on its way so we are in for more awesome!!

Vandyke and Larson have given us a really good sci-fi work in "Starship Liberator". The technologically superior humans of the Hundred Worlds face off against the implacable, brutal and reptilian "Hok". Humanity must battle for survival against a savage foe, pitting their technologically invincible "mechsuiters" against the multitudes of cannon-fodder Hok.But, is everything as it seems? Elite warrior Derek Straker, a genetically-enhanced pilot of an invincible mechanical suit never questions the war he's fighting...until he's captured by the Hok enemy. I was surprised by the twists and turns in the plot. I wasn't expecting it in a seemingly straight-forward sci-fi novel. I must admit I enjoyed it. The science in the sci-fi is very good as are the military tactics, weaponry and the course of battles. Things don't always go "as planned" just like in real life and people have to make new plans and change old ones on the fly. They sometimes get surprised as the enemy(s) is not portrayed as a passive force but rather one that thinks and acts with it's own genuine intelligence and cunning. Now for the criticisms. The funny, wisecracking sidekick has been overused and I was tired of "Loco" Poloco as soon as the character was introduced. In my experience, the more elite the warriors, the more serious they are and the "loveable screwball" (who always acts like he's a sixteen year-old) as the sidekick was annoying. Although I enjoyed the political aspects of the book, it was a tad heavy-handed. If you're a snowflake, you won't like it.Having said that, there's a lot of good here. I found the alien Ruxins interesting and their misinterpretations of human concepts and ways of speaking was often amusing, making up for the Loco character. I was never bored with the book and often found myself reading a few minutes longer than my break or lunch lasted at work! It's a good read and well worth the money I spent on the paperback.A solid four star sci-fi and worth a read.

I hate to give 5 stars to a substantial, entertaining, well written pulp fiction adventure, just because the authors somehow managed to combine their strengths and avoid their weaknesses; but in this case I have to.Chapter 1 had me worried. It was good, but it played gleefully close to the cliff's edge from which there is no return. It introduced the protagonist, who is the best of the best of the best, equipped with the most technologically advanced weapons in the galaxy (or at least his corner of it). And yeah, he gets more powerful from there. For my personal taste, the mightiness of the hero is the weakest aspect of the book. The authors did this on purpose, not just to appeal to the wish fulfillment fantasies of the crucial 15-25 male demographic, but so that they could give him the most herculean task and the most hopeless situations imaginable, and give him a chance to win. The struggle is real!Characters, setting, plot, politics and moral dilemmas are all good. The characters don't so much change as they grow to understand themselves and the world better with experience. Morality is black and white, as in real life, but the characters and situations can be very gray, also as in real life.I tore through the book. If you like science fiction, particularly military science fiction, you'll like this book. If you only like stories about androids contemplating love, you may not be interested. Of course fans of either author will check this out, but I thought the book was better than the authors' solo works.

I will read anything by B.V. Larson, so picked this up without hesitation despite being unfamiliar with the work of Mr. VanDyke. For all I know, Mr. Larson left much of the writing to his co-author, but it sure reads like one of his books -- a good thing! There really is nothing new in "Starship Liberator", perhaps apart from something called "underspace", but it all comes together in a most pleasing fashion.MINOR SPOILER FOLLOWS. A genetically enhanced mechsuit warrior is sent into the middle of a war that turns out to have three unequal sides. He and his friends assemble a band to try to do the right thing, essentially becoming a fourth actor in the war. Alliances are fluid, but the plot is gripping enough to make me immediately start the second volume.

If there's 6 stars I'd give it all. There were some slacking in his previous couple of books (the last one was good though), Larson might be experimenting... But teaming when with David VanDyke, this makes a potent mix that made my blood boil in a few occasions, especially the part where he set up to beat his bully down, literally.Of cause there's the usual sidekicks aka Loco not unlike Park and Naxby who can be mistaken as Marvin. But all that never stopped the book from an exciting adventure that I hate to see an end and therefore can't wait for the Indomitable to be available.
