This book has many elements of the Starforce and Undying Mercenaries series. And that is all just awesome. We have the rookie leader who is bad ass. We have his love interest. We have the bad ass side kick. And of course, we have the hyper intelligent scientist role. (Hello Marvin-esque guy!!!). And we take those roles and just throw them into the blender of the space opera!!Usually it is humanity vs some alien force. This is humanity vs itself! And it is a clever twist on these types of stories.Lots and twists and turns in this one! And they are grounded and well thought out! It is great!Book 2 is on its way so we are in for more awesome!!

Vandyke and Larson have given us a really good sci-fi work in "Starship Liberator". The technologically superior humans of the Hundred Worlds face off against the implacable, brutal and reptilian "Hok". Humanity must battle for survival against a savage foe, pitting their technologically invincible "mechsuiters" against the multitudes of cannon-fodder Hok.But, is everything as it seems? Elite warrior Derek Straker, a genetically-enhanced pilot of an invincible mechanical suit never questions the war he's fighting...until he's captured by the Hok enemy. I was surprised by the twists and turns in the plot. I wasn't expecting it in a seemingly straight-forward sci-fi novel. I must admit I enjoyed it. The science in the sci-fi is very good as are the military tactics, weaponry and the course of battles. Things don't always go "as planned" just like in real life and people have to make new plans and change old ones on the fly. They sometimes get surprised as the enemy(s) is not portrayed as a passive force but rather one that thinks and acts with it's own genuine intelligence and cunning. Now for the criticisms. The funny, wisecracking sidekick has been overused and I was tired of "Loco" Poloco as soon as the character was introduced. In my experience, the more elite the warriors, the more serious they are and the "loveable screwball" (who always acts like he's a sixteen year-old) as the sidekick was annoying. Although I enjoyed the political aspects of the book, it was a tad heavy-handed. If you're a snowflake, you won't like it.Having said that, there's a lot of good here. I found the alien Ruxins interesting and their misinterpretations of human concepts and ways of speaking was often amusing, making up for the Loco character. I was never bored with the book and often found myself reading a few minutes longer than my break or lunch lasted at work! It's a good read and well worth the money I spent on the paperback.A solid four star sci-fi and worth a read.

I hate to give 5 stars to a substantial, entertaining, well written pulp fiction adventure, just because the authors somehow managed to combine their strengths and avoid their weaknesses; but in this case I have to.Chapter 1 had me worried. It was good, but it played gleefully close to the cliff's edge from which there is no return. It introduced the protagonist, who is the best of the best of the best, equipped with the most technologically advanced weapons in the galaxy (or at least his corner of it). And yeah, he gets more powerful from there. For my personal taste, the mightiness of the hero is the weakest aspect of the book. The authors did this on purpose, not just to appeal to the wish fulfillment fantasies of the crucial 15-25 male demographic, but so that they could give him the most herculean task and the most hopeless situations imaginable, and give him a chance to win. The struggle is real!Characters, setting, plot, politics and moral dilemmas are all good. The characters don't so much change as they grow to understand themselves and the world better with experience. Morality is black and white, as in real life, but the characters and situations can be very gray, also as in real life.I tore through the book. If you like science fiction, particularly military science fiction, you'll like this book. If you only like stories about androids contemplating love, you may not be interested. Of course fans of either author will check this out, but I thought the book was better than the authors' solo works.

I will read anything by B.V. Larson, so picked this up without hesitation despite being unfamiliar with the work of Mr. VanDyke. For all I know, Mr. Larson left much of the writing to his co-author, but it sure reads like one of his books -- a good thing! There really is nothing new in "Starship Liberator", perhaps apart from something called "underspace", but it all comes together in a most pleasing fashion.MINOR SPOILER FOLLOWS. A genetically enhanced mechsuit warrior is sent into the middle of a war that turns out to have three unequal sides. He and his friends assemble a band to try to do the right thing, essentially becoming a fourth actor in the war. Alliances are fluid, but the plot is gripping enough to make me immediately start the second volume.

If there's 6 stars I'd give it all. There were some slacking in his previous couple of books (the last one was good though), Larson might be experimenting... But teaming when with David VanDyke, this makes a potent mix that made my blood boil in a few occasions, especially the part where he set up to beat his bully down, literally.Of cause there's the usual sidekicks aka Loco not unlike Park and Naxby who can be mistaken as Marvin. But all that never stopped the book from an exciting adventure that I hate to see an end and therefore can't wait for the Indomitable to be available.

I ilke John Lescoart's writing. I'm an attorney; I live in San Francisco, and I know Al Gianinini, Mr. Lescroart's source for legal issues. But even if none of that applied, I'd still like his writing. Abe Glitsky is a complicated character, the son of a Caucasian Jew and an African American woman. He is smart; moral; and a good cop. Dismas Hardy is a hard working attorney with a rich family life and a desire for justice. He's best friends with Lt. Glitsky. In this case, Glitsky's daughter is murdered. He never acknowledged to this woman that he was her father, and although she knew, she never confronted him. She goes back to an earlier book involving her mother and Glitsky, and is a book where Dismas only has a cameo appearance, and the protagonist is Abe. It gives context to this book. The story is one that is a lesson for people who think all people charged with crimes are guilty, when they confess to the crime; hold the crime weapon in their possession; and are caught at the scene. All this was true of the defendant in this case, a drunk heroin addict. However, the story shows that proper investigation can divulge information to show that what appears as clear as can be, is a mirage that holds no substance. I've had cases like this, and know what an uphill battle it is to win them. The story is fast paced with lots of twists and turns. It's enjoyable from cover to cover. And the best thing is that Mr. Lescroart has been prolific, and you have lots of good books that continue to showcase the characters you learn to love. Check it out.

The story starts with Cole Burgess stooped over a woman's body, gun in hand, tearing off her jewelry, so you know right away that he didn't do it. Abe Glisky of homicide wants the suspect sweated and made to confess because the victim is his illegitimate daughter, although he hadn't know this for many years. His best friend, defense lawyer Dismas Hardy, didn't want to take the case because of Glisky, so you knew that he would eventually take the case. The story proceeds in a very interesting way, bringing in the DA, Sharon Pratt and her assistant and lover, Gabriel Torrey, neither of which are particularly likable characters. There are some side stories, such as the development of the relationship of the widower Glisky and the victim's paralegal Treya Ghent, which is very sweet. The book moves along quickly as the story unfolds and you discover exactly who did what and why.It is well written, keeps your interest and brings everything together in the end. I would say that aside from a bit of overdramatic courtroom drama at the end that looked like it was written for an episode of Law and Order, it is an excellent read. This is my first Lescroart book and I am motivated to read more from him.

Dismas Hardy is not going to get drawn into representing the accused killer of Elaine Wager (Cole Burgess). Well, only because his sister asks, he will make sure that the man who was found standing over the dead body of Ms. Wagner with the murder weapon in his hand and her jewelry in his pockets, gets proper tratment in the lockup as he deals with his drug addiction. But that's all.As he looks into the matter he discovers his good friend, Police Lt. Abe Glitsky taking unusually questionable contitutional liberties with Mr. Burgess's interrogation and incarceration. Then the San Francisco District Attorney, Sharon Pratt, who's administration has been known for it's inability to get convictions (all the good prosecutors resigned) and it's "humane" treatment of criminals it considers to be victims of society decides to ask for the death penalty. Of course, it is an election year and Ms. Pratt's re-election chances are tenuous at best.We learn early on that the murder victim is in fact, Abe Glitsky's daughter (her mother married another man while pregant by Glitsky). The helps explain his uncharacteristic behavior. After viewing a "confession" that the police sweat out of Cole, Glitsky starts to wonder if they have the real killer and from that concern, the story unwinds toward "The Hearing". Hardy signs on for the duration and picks up considerable help along the way. Lescroart is at his best during the trial scenes and the reader somewhat impatiently waits for the story to unravel, which it surely does in a most satisfying way when court is in session. Lecroart has never failed to please his readers.

"The Hearing" involves a case that never gets to trial and you know it won't make it all the way to a jury almost from the opening sentence. This one didn't have the legal BANG you usually get from a John Lescroart legal thriller. I still find Dismis Hardy and his half-black-half-Jewish police officer friend intriguing characters and will continue reading Mr. Lescroart. I can only say he's written far better novels than this particular one.Mark RubinsteinAuthor of Mad Dog House, Love Gone Mad and The Foot Soldier

Our pals Hardy and Glitzky are again up to their ears in legal and criminal suspense. We should be used to Lescroart’s twisting schemes to make us think we’ve found the villain before the last few paragraphs, but NO...

The portion of his books that Lescroat to the personal lives of his characters are over long and by and large uninteresting. As he moves toward the end of his books and the twists occupy a greater part of the narrative, the pace quickens and becomes more enjoyable. My four star rating only refers to this portion. The balance is a 3 star at best

This series is good. I've been ready one after another. The writer just carries you along. I think there are 16 books in the series and I've read 11. I guess that will tell you what I think.

His books have great characters in a beautiful City that serves as a character as well. I love these characters, and their hometown, which is also mine. His plots are tightly wound and hard to figure out before the end which makes them wonderful reads.

About the Author

James M. Henslin was born in Minnesota, graduated from high school and junior college in California and from college in Indiana. Awarded scholarships, he earned his Master’s and doctorate degrees in sociology at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri. After this, he was awarded a postdoctoral fellowship from the National Institute of Mental Health, and spent a year studying how people adjust to the suicide of a family member. His primary interests in sociology are the sociology of everyday life, deviance, and international relations. He has published widely in sociology journals, including Social Problems and American Journal of Sociology. While a graduate student, Jim Henslin taught at the University of Missouri at St. Louis. After completing his doctorate, he joined the faculty at Southern Illinois University, Edwardsville, where he is Professor Emeritus of Sociology. He says, “I’ve always found the introductory course enjoyable to teach. I love to see students’ faces light up when they first glimpse the sociological perspective and begin to see how society has become an essential part of how they view the world.” Henslin enjoys reading and fishing. His two favorite activities are writing and traveling. He especially enjoys visiting and living in other cultures, for this brings him face to face with behaviors and ways of thinking that he cannot take for granted, experiences that “make sociological principles come alive.”

#214,957 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

I am a sociology instructor at a local college. I assigned this book for several semesters and was ultimately not a huge fan. It is clearly written, but has too many definitions and not enough contextual background to help students understand how sociological concepts and ways of understanding the world might be useful to them or helpful in understanding their personal and social worlds. Henslin has a way of writing which both gives sociology an artificial coherence and which presents debates which are relatively settled as active. For instance, sociology--according to Henslin--has exactly seven research methods (none of which includes 'interviews'...come on, tons of sociologists use interviews..); there are exactly 5 stages to the life course; the US has exactly 6 social classes. On the other hand, in a section of the book where Henslin describes why poor people are poor (p. 245-246), Henslin explains a debate between advocates of a 'culture of poverty' approach and those who view poverty as a structural feature of a society's dynamics. While he does acknowledge that most sociologists don't take a 'culture of poverty' approach to explaining poverty, is this really an ongoing, current debate in the discipline? If not, then why is he presenting it as such? Overall, this book seems more designed to generate easy multiple choices questions than to teach a messy discipline like sociology. Finally, I found Henslin's chapter on Race and Ethnicity completely unusable. While he does acknowledge the social construction of race, he ignores structural racism in favor of sections on "Prejudice and Discrimination" and "Theories of Prejudice". A central theme of contemporary critical race theory is to point out that viewing racism as merely a problem of the personal prejudices of individuals is part of a popular MISunderstanding that leads us away from exploring how social structures are designed in ways that privilege white people (see Jane Hill's classic, The Everyday Language of White Racism). I mean, seriously? How can you talk about race and racism in the US without even mentioning White privilege? Or structural/institutional racism (different, I would point out, then 'institutional discrimination' which is mentioned on p. 263)? Or the ideology of colorblindness? And what is up with the "Down to Earth Sociology" and "Cultural Diversity" information boxes? On p. 262, Henslin has a box entitled "The Racist Mind" which explores how people are attracted to White supremest ideologies. As someone who has taught about race in sociology and anthropology before, we are often teaching AGAINST the idea that our society's enormous inequalities based on race (such as the fact that the average net worth of White households is more than 10 times as large as that of black households) are entirely the product of White supremacists and overt racists. Instead, the challenge of teaching about contemporary racism is one of locating the origin of such inequalities in the everyday behaviors of people who do not identify as racists or bigoted. Having a box on "The Racist Mind" actively undermines that approach and enables students to continue to understand racism as the product of overt racists (i.e., 'somebody else') rather than social systems that they participate in.My biggest frustration, however, is the "Cultural Diversity" box on p. 275, entitled "The Illegal Travel Guide". In this box, Henslin makes undocumented migration sound fun and jovial, rather than a disastrous and deadly consequence of US border policies. He writes, "it was then that I realized that the thousands of Manuels SCURRYING about Mexico and the millions of Juans they are transporting can never be stopped, since only the United States can fulfill their dreams for a better life" (p. 227). So, Henslin is not only making the journey of undocumented migrants sound fun, he is not only referring to those who undertake this journey as "illegal," but he actually using ANIMAL metaphors to describe them. Scurrying. It reads like something out of pre-WWII Germany. As someone who may very well have undocumented students in my courses, the thought of asking them to read such a weird, bigoted description of their experience or those of their family members is sickening.Anyway, not a great book. Next semester I am switching to Introduction to Sociology (Seagull Eleventh Edition) by Anthony Giddens, Deborah Carr, Mitchell Duneier, and Richard Appelbaum.

I bought this book slightly used for like $50, thinking I got a good deal. This entire textbook is online for free though. If you want a cheaper option just use the online book.If you want a physical copy buy the used one.

This is the first negative review I've ever given. Unfortunately, as others have said this book is rather opinionated. However, the most egregious issue I have with this book was the authors "so called" research sources. In one particular chapter he cites a well known tabloid magazine (dailymail) as proof of one of his statements. What sort of scientist/professional does that!? Since you'll probably have to buy this book for a class regardless, feel free to fact check my claim.

A Great Buy! The College Bookstore wanted $110.00 for this book USED! My son needed it for School., We will be buying more of his textbooks online next semester! It's in great shape, less wear than more of those on the College Bookstore shelves and exactly what he needed! All in all a Great Buy!

I know that this is a used book, but nowhere in the description did it say that it was abused. Maybe I am too much of a neat freak or take too much care of anything I have, but I received this book with a folded cover page and creases galore. Now I know that you get what you pay for so since this is what passes as good quality maybe next time I will have to step up and buy new!

This book is very helpful. It has a lot of details to study the world of Sociology. But there was one plank page on the first chapter and a few marks on the sentences that I can barley read and see the words.

Check edition prior to ordering. That way you get yhe correct book.

was for school and was just as stated, very pleased

#225,663 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

I actually heard a story from this book on one of the pod-casts I listen to. As soon as it was over I hit Amazon and bought it. Several very interesting stories involving time travel and time slips. All are fairly short, read the entire book in one sitting. I have always been interested in time slips but it can be hard to find good stories that are not heavily slanted in one direction or another by the author. This book is the exception, the author does a good job presenting you with stories and letting you make up your own mind. Book is well written and easy to read. Not to heavy on technical or physics jargon. For the most part the stories are presented just as the person experienced the phenomena. I recommend this book (and it's sequel) to anyone who has an interest in the subject of time travel.

This was a fascinating book to read; I learned quite a bit about time travel cases of which I had been unaware. Having said that, it was a tad frustrating to find the meat on the bone of the subject matter in the book. There are tantalizing clues and nebulous accounts of various time travel incidents throughout the book; however, the author doesn't provide any follow up or offer any attempts by him to contact some of the people involved in these incidents. Granted, some have passed away, some faded into obscurity, and what not, but due to the what I can only imagine is a world-wide fascination for most people with the very idea of time travel, I feel the author should've made the effort if he was able. If you're looking for that type of experience with this book, save your money. If on the other hand you are like me and would like to have a primer on the various reported/alleged time travel incidents then go ahead and get this book. You will enjoy it if you enjoy speculating about the "what if" but not if you want the "show me the proof".

Save your money and just look for the same stories on the Internet. Each story is just the bare bones information with no real research, in depth hypotheses, nor any background information. Presented as short vignettes in the Ripley's style. Short book, but don't waste the 3 bucks. The author probably spent all of a day getting these stories from web searches.

These stories are all related to true events. The idea of parrellel universes is explained as a possible reason thesehappenings. The way that a tiny slip towards a parrellel universe can create a window to see into or go into it can happen. Slips like this show the relative lack of force that time has. Time is only relative here and is nonbindingelsewhere. This book shows how the quantum science explanations of earth and the universe make sense of how life is.

This is the first and only book that I have ever read about time travel so it is difficult to compare against anything else. Unless I check out his references, I have no feeling for the validity of what is in the book. It is interesting in any case. He did make one statement about physicists agreeing on time travel. In my 15 years at Los Alamos, I met a lot of physicists and none of them ever mentioned time travel.

Richard Bullivant wrote an astounding book with True Time Travel Stories. if your interested in stories of other people having "time slips" or their experiences with reported time shifts/definitional shifts then this book is a must read. My personal interest is a little more personal and even though it's a great book,it didn't have the complete information I was looking for but it had some.

Of time travel. The stories are fascinating and curious. There were no typos to distract the reader from the subject. A good read and a stretch of the imagination.

This book certainly encourages thought and discourages skepticism. The evidence seems to point more towards belief and away from doubt. Whatever your opinion it will give you much more to think about, so do read it please.
