Review

“Here is an invitation to build a world where we reject all forms of killing, both legal and illegal. It is a call to join a movement where grace gets the last word. Claiborne’s brilliant book reminds us that without forgiveness, there is no future.” (Archbishop Desmond Tutu, author of The Book of Forgiving)“Shane Claiborne invites us to be consistently pro-life and larger than any one culture! This is whole-making at its best!” (Richard Rohr, author of Falling Upward)“I wish the whole Church would read this book. As Christians, we know we believe in grace, but we struggle with what that means when it comes to the death penalty. Read Executing Grace and consider if it might be time to live without the death penalty.” (John Perkins, author of Let Justice Roll Down)“This is a major contribution--a thorough, carefully researched book on an issue that should be important to all of us. Shane casts the death penalty debate in the light of grace and makes his case persuasively, creatively, and gracefully.” (Philip Yancey, author of Prayer: Does It Make Any Difference?)“The best book on the death penalty since Dead Man Walking.” (John Dear, author of A Persistent Peace)“Shane Claiborne may well join the ranks of Rachel Carson and John Howard Griffin--storytellers who’ve pricked the conscience of our nation and nudged us toward a more perfect union.” (Jonathan Wilson-Hartgrove, author of Strangers at My Door)“Claiborne will not let us off the hook about the radicality of God’s grace. Nor will he look away from the social reality of barbarism masquerading as legality. One can only hope this vigorous, inescapable book will make the difference in practice that it articulates so clearly.” (Walter Brueggemann, Columbia Theological Seminary)“If you’ve never changed your mind, you may have lost it along the way. If you’re open to changing your mind, here’s a powerful book--intelligent, compassionate, and truly, truly important--by one of the most thoughtful moral voices alive today. Don’t miss Shane Claiborne’s Executing Grace.” (Brian D. McLaren, author of A New Kind of Christianity)“Executing Grace may be the best book on the death penalty. Shane weaves together narratives of people whose lives have demonstrated the miracle of grace amid murder and state killing. He shows that the Way of Jesus is incompatible with the death penalty. Indispensable, highly recommended.” (David P. Gushee, Distinguished University Professor of Christian Ethics and Director of the Center for Faith and Public Life at Mercer University)“Powerful, urgent, and right. Solidly biblical and full of wrenchingly gripping stories, this book makes a highly convincing case for ending capital punishment. Every Christian, especially those deeply committed to protect the sanctity of human life, should read it.” (Ronald J. Sider, author of Rich Christians in an Age of Hunger)

This is Shane Claiborne's best book. This book is framed by the real lives and deaths of victims of murder and execution. It's a book I have already recommended to people inside and outside of explicitly pacifist faith traditions, and I can imagine Bible Belt evangelical types resonating with.By paying particular attention to the stories of forgiveness and redemption hiding behind stories of murder and execution (including that of our Savior), he persuasively shows the death penalty to be something that Christians simply cannot participate in. He writes with compassion about both the victims of violence and those who commit the violence (and then those who inflict the violence as punishment) which makes a whole lot of sense coming from a religion whose founder forgave as he was executed. The best parts of the book were the individual stories of people who had found healing from the crimes they had committed and crimes committed against them, showing that there is indeed a possibility for a kind of justice that doesn't require more killing.

Within the first 20 pages, Claiborne lays out seemingly his entire premise and then started to repeat himself and I stopped reading. I agree with his premise and hold similar views, and was hoping for something meatier or fresh perspectives, but this doesn't offer them. Beginner level.

Shane Claiborne gives very compelling and readable reasons to reject the death penalty. The most powerful reasons are wrapped up in the real stories of those guilty and not guilty who have faced the death penalty, along with those whose loved ones were victims of convicted killers. These mourning families come to realize that killing another human being will not bring peace to their souls nor to the society. The stories of reconciliation between victim (families) and murderer give powerful testimony to the importance of seeking restorative justice rather than retribution. Claiborne also deals well with Biblical passages that some Christians see as supporting the death penalty.

A very important, well-written thought provoking and essential read for all who are seriously concerned about justice. A must-read for all people of faith. It should be in every church, school and personal library. I cannot recommend this book enough.

Very eye opening and mind changing argument to oppose all capital punishment using Jesus' words in gospels.

I had sincere hopes of being seriously engaged on a complex issue. However, if you want to read a long sermon of cliches and anecdotal examples without any logical analysis and no biblical exegsis, then this book is for you.

This book changed my outlook completely on the death penalty. The group I read this book was able to have a video chat with the author, Shane Claiborne. Which really provided feedback on anything we were unsure of. I grew up in a rural southern baptist area where the death penalty is encouraged if nothing else, but Executing Grace helped me to understand what God says instead of how I think.

Claiborne presents a beautiful argument, well-constructed, and grounded in sound theology. Whether or not you agree with his viewpoint, it makes you think, which is important if we want to implement any meaningful changes in our own lives and in the lives of others.
