Pretend for a moment that you are a stereotypical "frat boy". What would you fantasize about? . . .First things first: I'm rich. Like Bruce Wayne: billionaire parents, but they're gone now. Maybe I have my own thing that is improbably lucrative, but I don't have to do any of the boring work stuff. I've got fancy cars, a movie theater to play video games in, obscure booze... yeah.I've got magical superpowers. Totally amped-up super wizard magic that I can do all sorts of crazy stuff with. Unless there's some hostile non-regular-human around, in which case I'm borderline useless. But my powers totally let me screw with the Authorities. The cops can't touch me, because I'm rich and powerful, but I can totally mess with The Man at every opportunity. Yeah. Cops fear me. And everybody has to call me "Master", which is totally cool, because everybody will be white. In St. Louis.Next, the women. All the women around me are gorgeous, and constantly undressing me with their eyes. Yeah. All women want me, like they just can't help themselves. If at some point that starts to seem ridiculous, I'll get a big surge of power that causes women to want me even more, and makes men want to obey me. But it's cool, because I won't have control over it, so it totally won't be my fault that I'm giving everyone around me a supernatural roofy. What about a cop who's also a woman? Yeah. She'll be all weepy, and blush at the thought of entering an establishment with adult entertainment, and need a man to comfort her, but not in that way, because, you know, female cops.My best friend will be a werewolf, so my "dog" can actually be a dog. (Ed: okay, points for that one.)I'll have a love interest. Smokin' hot and utterly devoted to me, of course. She'll be an employee, naturally, because there's nothing wrong with that. When we get alone we'll converse like intimate lovers, with all the intensity of a college professor standing at a lectern explaining small business taxes. Hot. . . .The book is silly, unapologetically so, and I think unintentionally so on occasion. Either the brand of silliness works for you, or it doesn't. It didn't for me.

Despite being a "Thriller", I wasn't too thrilled with this one.I see it's book one in an eight book series, so either it got better,or Nate doesn't rub other people the wrong way.Nate Temple is a wizard in a setting where magic isn't quiteacknowledged, but a lot of people are starting to notice there isstrange stuff going on. In general he himself keeps a low profilemagically, though not in any other way. The heir to Temple Industries,Nate has cultivated a reputation as an oddball, declining to beinvolved in the company at all and running his own eclectic bookshop instead. Sub-rosa, he also does jobs as a magical finder andis currently on contract to deliver a rare magical book to amysterious client. Unfortunately, his very satisfactory life isabout to be upended as his parents are murdered, forcing him tobecome involved with the company he spurned, the book he is lookingfor may bring the apocalypse, and dragons are converging on histown...Actually said that way, it sounds like a pretty promising book, butunfortunately the execution is not as good as the premise. Thewriting is amateurish, sometimes very much so, and Nate often comesacross as a jerk, insisting on being called "Master Temple" andjerking around normals for no good reason. (Yes, I used "jerk" &"jerking", I couldn't see a way out of it). He also seems incapableof reasoning out that if he is a suspect in his parents' murders,he probably shouldn't gift his FBI werewolf friend, who is involvedin the case, with a new car. (Setting aside the fact that in reallife the friend probably woluldn't be allowed to accept). There'salso a bit of "my life is too dangerous, you would be better offwithout me" to the woman he may love -- I *hate* that one.Anyway, if this is a first book I'm prepared to believe Silvers got better, but not willing to follow him and Nate there.

What a rockin fun read! This book had me rooting for the good guy, laughing at references to classic books, and swimming in supernatural beasties. I enjoyed the dry wit and sarcasm of the main character and the use of excess magic, billionaire money, a butler, and the other toys . This is the start of a series that I will enjoy reading as soon as I press the purchase button on the next installment. Good luck Shayne Silver's, I have just become a fan and I am a voracious reader. Keep the keys clicking please.

I read a lot of this genre and to give you an idea of my ordered of preferences on books like this one:Dresden files by Jim ButcherSandman Slim by Richard KadreyThe Iron Druid Chronicles by Kevin HearneColin McCool by M.D. MasseyThis book would be far below those. Okay, why?The storyline was okay but the characters seemed two dimensional - all the women were beautiful and willing - his lifelong friend is not sufficiently filled out to understand why he was a lifelong friend - and the main character is a dick. A pompous ass billionaire. Compare him to any of the characters in the above book and he seems cartoonish - even more so than Sandman Slim. I found the main character to be inconsistent in his actions - he seemed like a bunch of different people melded into one. I found the women characters pretty demeaning. So this was not awful but I will not be reading any others in the series.
