Review

A New York Times Noteworthy Book "Fans of Galway Kinnell won't want to miss his Collected Poems, which reminds readers, three years after his death, why he is still one of our most beloved, essential poets. Kinnell, whose honors include the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award, imbued his poems with resonant images and a breathtaking combination of compassion, fragility and strength."  –The Washington Post "Kinnell’s best poems are great with self, not piously emptied of it: alluringly proficient, capacious, seductive, roving; willing to make large claims, and risk the equation of a sounding phrase with an immortal sweetness.  As durable, as universal, as unequivocally and unironically wholehearted as any twentieth or twenty-first century poet could hope to be." –Poetry Magazine "Galway Kinnell excelled at creating immersive moments. The stanzas and scenes of his plain-spoken verse are grounded in physical detail and acute psychological insight, even as they explore more abstract philosophical territory. From his dark preoccupations—mortality, and the familiar ugliness of everyday life—he draws a sense of beauty and wonder." –The Atlantic "Kinnell's poems are exactly what one thinks of when one thinks of contemporary poetry. It is impossible to consider the landscape of the last 50 years of American poetry without Kinnell…[he] was inarguably a great poet. Specificity itself — the great bounty of attending intimately to life's minutia — is another of Kinnell's great subjects and poetic practices. Kinnell teaches…attentiveness." –L.A. Times "Kinnell’s lifelong love of the world and its creatures, his faith in natural process, and his attempts to reconcile nature and culture will continue to appeal to those who care about and want to understand our place on this planet."–Harvard Review "To read this collection from the start is to experience the evolution of Kinnell’s understanding of poetic form but also to witness his unique voice and sensibility, essentially present from the earliest years. Of all the poets of his generation, Kinnell is likely the most sanguine and sane, the one most exuberantly in love with life—all of it, and he embraces it all to rise again in his poems." –World Literature Today "Whether the details are urban or rural, [Kinnell’s] strongest poems have the vigor and precision of acutely observed nature writing. And they demonstrate his special expertise with a flexible yet pressurized poetic line. Through his Collected Poems thrums a metrical pulse, and the vowels often reverberate as though a line of verse were a flexing plank struck by the voice. Now, this new Collected Poems provides definitive renderings of Kinnell's poetry in a majestic hardcover volume. Gathering the poems in one place for those who've long loved his work, it's also a welcoming gateway for newcomers." –Seven Days

Love it. Wonderful comprehensive Collection

The Collected Poems of Galway Kinnell by Galway Kinnell is a collection of sixty-five years of writing. Kinnell, a Navy veteran, experienced Europe and the Middle East while serving. He was also involved in the civil rights movement. Kinnell was awarded the Pulitzer Prize and a National Book Award for Selected Poems and he studied at Princeton and earned his Master's degree from the University of Rochester. The tome of the work is presented in several sections reflecting publications and time. His earlier work takes the form of more traditional poetry with sights and feelings of his ports of call in the navy, particularly France and India. What storms have blown me, and from where,What dreams have drowned, or half dead, here...Each year I lived I watched the fissureBetween what was and what I wished forWiden, until there was nothing leftBut the gulf of emptiness. The traditional form is partly owed to his admiration of Walt Whitman. He then moves to more of a "Beat" type of poetry. His work seems influenced by the movement even though he was not an active participant. His work in the late 1960s and 1970s moves much more into nature poems:On the tidal mud just before sunset, dozens of starfisheswere creeping. It wasas though the mud were a skyand enormous, imperfect starsmoved across it slowlyas the actual stars cross heavenIn the 1980s through the 2000s Kinnell finds himself writing as an experienced sage.  He relies on his personal experience and knowledge to create his mature works.  Here, the poems reflect on aging and the death of those who were close and the lives of his children. Kinnell also speaks frequently of religion, but not in the most positive sense. His short poem "Prayer":Whatever happens. Whateverwhat is is is whatI want. Only that. But that.He had a strong dislike for Christianity.  Some of that can be seen in the long poem, written in the early 1960s, "The Avenue Bearing the Initial of Christ into the New World":A roadway of refuse from the teeming shores and ghettosAnd the Caribbean Paradise, into the new ghetto and new paradise,This God-forsaken Avenue bearing the initial of Christ. Before reading this collected works, I had not read any Kinnell poetry.  Although I was impressed with several poems his two most anthologized poems slipped by me-- "St. Francis and the Sow" and "After Making Love We Hear Footsteps".  His poems from the from the 1970s and later poems appealed the most to me.  The widespread of his poetry and the evolving topics will sure to find favor with other readers with different tastes than my own.  As a collected work, Kinnell's poems, show his growth and refinement as a poet.  The introduction by Edward Hirsch will give the reader ample information and background on the poet and his poems.  A well-done collection that will allow the reader to pick and choose his or her favorite topics or simply give the reader something to pick up and randomly read.

Kinnell was an artist in residence at my university in the mid 1970s. Attendance at his classes was limited so I used to sneak in with a friend who was a selected enrollee. He was as memorable in person as his work and I've remained a life long fan. The primary works I am familiar with are Body Rags and The Book of Nightmares. This collection is as complete as I could possibly imagine, organized by publication dates.I've discovered in this volume works I had not read before and have found it extremely satisfying. The paper and font are perfectly matched to the work. This large volume is well bound but if weight in the hand is an issue, I'd recommend this in ebook form. There is an introduction and an afterword but the work is left to speak for itself. And it does.

I'm a poet. I have consumed poetry my entire life from Blake to Bukowski. I was even a poetry judge for many years. The Collected Poems of Gallway Kinnell is a comprehensive and respectful collection of Kinnell's work similar to one of my favorite, and often read poetry books, "The Complete Works of Kenneth Rexroth." Kinnell's free verse, symbolism and perceptions are universal and will speak to you as a reader... hopefully he inspires you to write. We all have our own, stories, poetry and prose to convey, I am grateful for Galway Kinnell and his contribution to poetry and encourage you to absorb his gifts in this important and significant collection.Spend a silent evening with him. There are things he might tell to no one, except you.Enjoy!

Galway Kinnell was considered one of the great American contemporary poets, often mentioned in the same breath with the likes of Whitman and Frost. He left a large body of work, which is well-represented chronologically in this thick volume. I started reading from the beginning, and found that early Kinnell was very aware of formal structure. It's only in his middle and later work do we see the often sprawling lyricism and narrative, infused with themes of nature and mortality. After the first section and a half covering his earliest works, I skipped toward the end, reading his often poignant last poems which appeared in the New Yorker magazine but were uncollected until now, then started working my way backward. I am a poet myself, and wrote a poem a couple of years ago inspired by his "The Man Splitting Wood in the Daybreak", which I was pleased to see in this collection. His work is inspiring, thought-provoking, erudite, amusing, and a must-have for any lover of poetry.
