Tommie dePaola is one of our favorite author-illustrators of children's books, and the original "Bill and Pete" book is our favorite of his books (even more than "Strega Nona"!). His comical illustration of crocodile Bill climbing the wall of the Bad Guy's house never fails to get a giggle from my kids. Plus, my husband has created the most wonderfully silly voices for the unlikely heroes -- and for the villainous Bad Guy - such that even their recitations of the alphabet become BIG GIGGLY FUN.So we were excited to find out that there were not one, but two more books in the series! This being one of them!Alas, like the "Strega Nona" sequels, "Bill and Pete Go Down the Nile" suffers from sequelitis: a little contrived, with good characterizations in search of an equally good story, falling short with a predictable plot involving a field trip on Egyptian history complete with sphinx jokes and t.p. mummies and all the rest of it. Nothing as fun as the wry crocodile skin suitcase jokes of the original. But who cares! We didn't -- well, not too much. This book was an excuse for hearing those silly voices again, and that was enough for us.

This book is a recommended story in the Ancient Egypt Chapter 2 section of Story of the World. I bought it never having read it because it's Tomie dePaola. It's a cute little story about a crocodile named Bill and his toothebrush Pete. They go on a class trip down the Nile to see the sights of Egypt, inuding the stinks (Sphinx, lol).It is a little disjointed in the introduction of the "bad guy", but over all the story is cute without being overly long. It's a simple, short read meant for elementary school.

This book is beyond fantastic. I found it by accident and have wondered ever since why it isn't hugely famous and on every kid's bookshelf. Or parent's bookshelf. Or anyone's. I keep buying copies for people when they have babies so they can read it to their children. And finally I realized I wanted one for myself (I'm past 50, to put it mildly). So I bought one just for me. The illustrations are hilarious. The story is sweet and funny. Bill and Pete are great friends. And Tomie de Paola is a wonderful illustrator.

This is an excellent book to read to a child who is just beginning to write. It’s a fun read with Tommie’s wonderful illustrations. We found our son soon reading along with us. It has become a bedtime standard I out home with the kids looking forward to participate. If your family has as much fun as we did, look for the next book in the series, Bill and Pete Go Down the Nile.

This wonderfully illustrated book continues the adventures of a young Nile crocodile and his toothbrush, Pete (a bird). This is the second of a Bill and Pete series but is a standalone adventure that brings in mummies and a museum caper. I love passing this book along to young children, partly because I am an archaeologist who has worked in Egypt.

Bill and Pete are a crocodile child and his toothbrush. When William Everette keeps leaving letters out of his name as he learns to spell it Pete comes to the rescue. Later they team up to foil the Bad Man's plans to make Bill into a suitcase.Tell me why I got rid of the books my children loved. Now I'm having to repurchase them so I can read them to my granddaughter. Not very good planning on my part.

This is one of the cutest kids books I've read with my kids lately. It helps teach about ancient Egypt in a not so boring as a textbook way. Books like this get my son excited about what he is learning in history.

Bill and Pete are two brave heros. Your child will love hearing their story.

good

This book was an incredible step forward when it was written (1962-1963). Lefschetz's Algebraic Topology (Colloquium Pbns. Series, Vol 27) was the main text at the time. A large number of other good to great books on the subject have appeared since then, so a review for current readers needs to address two separate issues: its suitability as a textbook and its mathematical content.I took the course from Mr. Spanier at Berkeley a decade after the text was written. He was a fantastic teacher - one of the two best I've ever had (the other taught nonlinear circuit theory). We did NOT use this text, except as a reference and problem source. He had pretty much abandonded the extreme abstract categorical approach by then. The notes I have follow the topical pattern of the book, but are so modified as to be essentially a different book, especially after covering spaces and the first homotopy group. His statement was that his treatment had changed since the subject had changed significantly. So much more has changed since then that I would not recommend this book as a primary text these days. Bredon's Topology and Geometry (Graduate Texts in Mathematics) is much better suited to today's student. So, why did I give it four stars? First, notice that it splits stylewise into three segments, corresponding the treatment of its material in a three quarter academic year. The first three chapters (intro, covering spaces, polyhedral) have really not been superceded in a beginning text. Topics are covered very thoroughly, aiding the student new to the subject. The next three chapters (homology) are written much with much less explanation included - indeed, some areas leave much to the reader to discover and, consequently, aren't very helpful if the instructor doesn't fill in the details (the text expects a rather rapid mathematical maturation from the first part - too much of a ramp in my opinion), but the text is comprehensive. The last section (homotopy theory, obstruction theory and spectral sequences) should just be treated as a reference - it'd be hard to find all this material in such a compact form elsewhere and the obstruction theory section has fantastic coverage of what was known as of the writing of this book. It's way too terse for a novice to learn from and there are some great books out there these days on the material.

This book is a highly advanced and very formal treatment of algebraic topology and meant for researchers who already have considerable background in the subject. A category-theoretic functorial point of view is stressed throughout the book, and the author himself states that the title of the book could have been "Functorial Topology". It serves best as a reference book, although there are problem sets at the end of each chapter. After a brief introduction to set theory, general topology, and algebra, homotopy and the fundamental group are covered in Chapter 1. Categories and functors are defined, and some examples are given, but the reader will have to consult the literature for an in-depth discussion. Homotopy is introduced as an equivalence class of maps between topological pairs. Fixing a base point allows the author to define H-spaces, but he does not motivate the real need for using pointed spaces, namely as a way of obtaining the composition law for the loops in the fundamental group. By suitable use of the reduced join, reduced product, and reduced suspension, the author shows how to obtain H-groups and H co-groups. The fundamental group is defined in the last section of the chapter, and the author does clarify the non-uniqueness of the fundamental group based at different points of a path-connected space. Covering spaces and fibrations are discussed in the next chapter. The author does a fairly good job of discussing these, and does a very good job of motivating the definition of a fiber bundle as a generalized covering space where the "fiber" is not discrete. The fundamental group is used to classify covering spaces. In chapter 3 the author gets down to the task of computing the fundamental group of a space using polyhedra. Although this subject is intensely geometrical. only six diagrams are included in the discussion. Homology is introduced via a categorical approach in the next chapter. Singular homology on the category of topological pairs and simplicial homology on the category of simplicial pairs. The author begins the chapter with a nice intuitive discussion, but then quickly runs off to an extremely abstract definition-theorem-proof treatment of homology theory. The discussion reads like one straight out of a book on homological algebra. This approach is even more apparent in the next chapter, where homology theory is extended to general coefficient groups. The Steenrod squaring operations, which have a beautiful geometric interpretation, are instead treated in this chapter as cohomology operations. The logic used is impeccable but the real understanding gained is severely lacking. General cohomology theory is treated in the next chapter with the duality between homology and cohomology investigated via the slant product. Characteristic classes, so important in applications, are discussed using algebraic constructions via the cup product and Steenrod squares. Characteristic classes do have a nice geometric interpretation, but this is totally masked in the discussion here. The higher homotopy groups and CW complexes are discussed in Chapter 7, but again, the functorial approach used here totally obscures the underlying geometrical constructions. Obstruction theory is the subject of Chapter8, with Eilenberg-Maclane spaces leading off the discussion. The author does give some motivation in the first few paragraphs on how obstructions arise as an impediment to a lifting of a map, but an explicit, concrete example is what is needed here. The last chapter covers spectral sequences as applied to homotopy groups of spheres. More homological algebra again, and the same material could be obtained (and in more detail) in a book on that subject.

Spanier's book is a wonderful treatment of many important ideas in algebraic topology, from covering spaces to Cech Cohomology. However, the going is difficult for those not initiated into the basic ideas. The proofs are correct, but often too terse for graduate students. It would also be nice if there were more explicit examples in the text, as in Greenberg and Harper's book, for example. There are plentiful exercises that go deep into the theoretical aspects of the subject. I use this book as a reference for my research and for that purpose it is excellent!

This is an excellent and very complete resource for developers and admins who already know the basics and have some experience with databases, and want a very detailed and complete reference book with lots of great tips and insights on MySQL. I'm a front end developer with *some* MySQL/database experience, so I was basically able to keep up with the *dense* technical-documentation-like content in this book, and I learned a ton about the features and capabilities of MySQL. However, this was NOT a great starter book for a beginner like me as it's essentially a detailed feature-oriented book with lots of theoretical examples, but almost no explanation of database design, and limited examples of how to use MySQL in a real-world application. This will be a fantastic long term MySQL reference on my bookshelf, but right now I've already ordered 2 more beginner-level books to help me apply all the features I now learned about from this book towards actually designing databases for my own applications.

Though not currently a developer, I wrote a lot of C a 25 years ago. This book was a nice middle-ground between a basic tutorial and a reference manual. The explanation is a bit verbose, but consequently easy to read through. The organization is a bit bizarre: one subsection goes into deep detail on alternative engines, with historical underpinnings and applications where one's queries are more efficient than the next; the next subsection goes into utterly elementary syntax for basic expressions. It goes back and forth without concern for the order in which information should be presented to make it relevant. There's a reason some stuff goes in the back of the book.A more unfortunate difficulty applies to the Kindle edition: the code examples don't lay our correctly, often rearranging symbols. I could usually figure it out , but this is a critical flaw for a book on programming syntax, where accurate character-by character presentation is the heart of the subject. Would be 2-stars if Amazon allowed rating of the specific version, rather than 4 for the book as a whole.

Overview:-great for mysql beginners.-great chapter on CAPI and example code is free and legal https: http://www.kitebird.com/mysql-book/.-get the paper version because kindle version has problems.Lifesaver for a school project I was working on written in C. The chapter on the C API was better than anything I could google up. If you only need that chapter (the C API) it's free and legal at the book's website http://www.kitebird.com/mysql-book/. You can also find all the example code there. If you have little or no experience setting up and using mysql I would recommend buying the book anyways. Get the paper version. I bought the Kindle version and the indexing (kindle navigation) isn't fine grained enough to navigate quickly, since you will often need to do so when treating this as a reference book. The characters in the code examples also appear disordered, for example you will see "p-" instead of "-p". If you have command line and programming experience, you can easily figure it out, if not you're screwed.

I got this book to get a quick intro to PHP. I'm glad to say that this book was very thorough and touched on a lot of subjects from basic language data structures to more complex topics such as file manipulation, email, and MySql database connectivity. This book is about 900 pages long and contains examples that illustrate the topics. It was perfect for me. I learn by seeing/doing and the CD-ROM the book comes with is loaded with the samples/examples that are in the book. So you can quickly copy/paste into your new project. I have over 15yrs of software development in various technologies and I found this very helpful.

Pro - cover a lot of materialCon - topics are explain vaguely with little examples. The author try to cram in too many topics, but he doesn't go into detail on any, so you left not understanding the material clearly and can't use the book as reference. The books talks about security, but the code are written unsecurely. I suggest reading https://www.amazon.com/PHP-MySQL-Dynamic-Web-Sites/dp/0321784073/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1495143766&sr=8-3&keywords=larry+ullman, though Larry doesn't cover as many topics as Luke, Larry does a better job at explaining the important concept with code example to help you understand the concept.

After searching for basic primers on PHP and MySQL, I settled on this book due to the many positive reviews. I'm glad that I did, as I now have a basic understanding of how to use these two technologies to build a web site.Make no mistake, unless you have previous experience, this book is only a beginning. I can tell that it will take many more hours of work before I am able to implement these concepts. However, I can now look at existing code and understand what it is doing "behind the scenes." I also feel confident that I could modify existing code to meet my needs.A few notes.First, you CAN download the CD content. Just go to [...], set up a free account, register your book, and download the content.Second, there are mistakes sprinkled throughout the text that have not been corrected in the errata. You will need to do some basic troubleshooting to get some of the scripts to work, but it's nothing drastic. Finally, this book is written for PHP 5.2. If you have 5.3, there is one specific function the author uses that is deprecated. When you get to this section, it will be quite obvious, because you will get an error to that effect. It took an additional fifteen minutes of research for me to find and implement the updated function. My only complaint is that, after the "PHP Crash Course" at the beginning, there are fewer coding examples throughout the book. I would rather type up many smaller scripts and test out each concept throughout the chapter rather than one or two longer scripts at the end.I'm only 2/3 of the way through the book, but I believe this was a worthwhile purchase, and I will definitely look for titles by this author again.

I work with a big collection of different decks for various purposes. I had stumbled upon this Faeries deck many times through hearsay and the positive reviews kept catapulting it to the top of the list. I would ignore it or discredit it each time for a couple of reasons. One was that I don't know anything about Faeries nor do I have an interest in them. Also the deck seemed a little too cutesy on the cover and I thought how am I going to connect to a deck that looks silly to me? This is probably more for those who have a fondness for girl stuff and the pretty faeries.I eventually kept getting a huge jolt to pick them up that only seemed to increase over a couple months. I ordered them thinking, "What's the worst that can happen? I'll lose $10 and I can always give them to someone who'll have more use for them."No way. I'm keeping them. These are excellent! One of the best decks I've worked with. They weren't nearly as airy fairy as I feared they might be. In fact like the name of the deck they are quite magical and another form of the angelic. The art work is top notch and expressive. The gilded edges and enlightening use of purple and gold on the backs really make this deck pop. What I love about this deck is it focuses on issues that are not featured with some of the other decks. It mostly deals with concrete issues such as tangible, materialistic, manifesting ventures. You wouldn't think so with Faeries, but I've learned that these are another form of angels that are simply closer to us than any either. They're the ones hanging out in the gardens and in nature. Some people that take photos of those settings will often see light orbs scattered around. Well - there they are...the faeries. There are cards such as "New Home", "Marriage", "Business Venture", "Affirmations" and "New Career" to more internal issues such as "Do Some Research", "Be Yourself", "Easy Does It", "Walk Away" and "Patience Please". The deck is one of the first I've seen that assists in timing by adding four season cards like "Autumn", "Winter", "Spring" and "Summer". You can also use the "Holiday" and "Birthday" cards for timing as well. There are also some that might be confusing to you such as "Son", "Daughter", "Pregnancy" and "Birthday". At first glance you may be unsure of what your guides would be telling you when you keep pulling the "Son" or "Daughter" card, but remember that your guides are attempting to communicate something to you in the best way they can. If you're consistently pulling the Son card and you don't have a son or can't get pregnant, it's possible another message is trying to be relayed to you. It could be someone else's son or that there is someone who is a Son equivalent to you that needs advice, or maybe you're a children's author. You have to delve in deep and listen to your guides or your intuition on how "son" might be connected to you.Or if you're pulling the Pregnancy card, it doesn't mean you're going to get pregnant. It could mean many different things including the birth of a project or a new career you're thinking about doing. The point is not to take the cards at immediate face value.I'm a natural clairvoyant and sentient so the cards are really just another tool I sometimes feel the need to use if I need to double check on something. They've been accurate each time for me as I'm able to hear or see the additional messages given to me that's associated with the card. These are fantastic and work for me. This is one of the decks I have fun with. I'm glad I went for it and got these. They'll work regardless if you're male or female. It's the messages that you're getting out of them that are valuable and can't be bought. If you are new to using oracle cards and not sure which ones to start out with, I would stick with Doreen Virtue's collection but practice with the "Healing Messages From Your Angels" Oracle Deck and "Angel Therapy" Decks. Those two are less specific and a great place to start. You can branch out easier into the other decks afterwards.

i really like how Doreen virture has her cards having a golden trim! it shows that she really takes time in each of her cards. the golden trim itself lets the light reflect off the cards which makes it glow a little this right now is so nice on making the mood so magical. The packaging was very well put together it was inside a box that hat fit the cards and the cards it self was new and had shrink warped together. These cards were nice had a border for each cards and on the bottom is where the message is and what you would need to focus on for today. i really like how its really easy and quick to use you can just pull one out and now you know what to focus on for today or just keep in mind for today.I would RECOMMEND for people that are beginning oracle cards!

These are such beautiful cards, and they are edged in gold. I purchased them for my little fae loving indigo child for Christmas. She absolutely loves them. Nice little short quotes on the cards with the basic meaning, extended meaning in the pages of the book. Great tool for self-awareness, and very fun.

I've been a fan of most Doreen's decks and typically have fairly accurate readings with them and this deck follows that trend. They are however, made better then some of her previous sets I.E the Messages from your Angels, and the one containing Mermaids - For me both those decks had a protective coating that peeled off, tearing away some of the picture, and then later the cards began to crease...The art work in this deck is a bit more consistent then some of her previous decks making it more appealing to use. This fairy deck is sturdy and pretty however the gold edging on mine began to wear off slightly by my second or third reading and now that I've had them for a few weeks they're completely bare in spots,I also liked her decks better before she started putting little quotes at the bottom, it left the cards more open to interpretation. I'm on the fence about having a card for each of the four seasons - if you typically use your oracle decks with spreads and these are pulled they can sometimes muddle your reading. my only other complaint is I feel the deck has some redundancies in the cards. such as having Son, Daughter, and Children cards, A New Career and Business Adventure Cards. Also as a few others reviewers have mentioned...when you first receive and open the box, they have a chemical smell to them, but I didn't find it so overbearing that I wasn't able to use the cards immediately, I just left the box open so it could air out when they weren't in use and the scent faded off quickly.Even though it seems that i have a lot of complaints about this deck I really enjoy it and don't regret my purchase in the slightest. I would recommend it to anyone.

First deck of Doreen Virtue cards. They are very beautiful. They stick together when you first get them so you have to carefully pull them apart.

I really wanted to like these cards, but I don't connect with them. I asked if I should text my boyfriend after an argument and I pulled the card saying I should become a vegetarian 😂🤷🏽‍♀They're such pretty cards though, just not resonating well with me, maybe I'll give them to my daughter.

Very attractive cards, well made, sturdy box to protect the cards, great artwork with nice borders & guidance on the front of each card. Gentle enough to be used for a young teenager for guidance. Happy with my purchase!

Rigorous Reading: 5 Access Points for Comprehending Complex Texts (Corwin Literacy)

Review

"One would think that the first place to look when wanting information about the Common Core State Standards would be, well, the Common Core State Standards. The fact is, though, Doug Fisher and Nancy Frey are quickly becoming the go-to folks for information on teaching these standards. They′ve proven this again in Rigorous Reading. This is certainly a book to be added to your collection of books that attend to the demands of the CCSS." Author: Kylene Beers, Ed.D."With Rigorous Reading Doug Fisher and Nancy Frey have provided literacy educators who are committed to successfully raising the bar with solutions that make sense. The book is masterfully developed with an extensive reach across many grade levels in terms of defining what it means to provide intentional instruction and teaching text complexity. The five access points are discussed pragmatically with evidence of a solid research base deftly woven throughout the book. This is the most practical book I have come across in terms of providing teachers with the knowledge base and assistance many are seeking to improve their instruction with regard to complex texts." Author: Steven L. Layne, Ed.D., Professor of Literacy Education"In Rigorous Reading: 5 Access Points for Helping Students Comprehend Complex Texts, Fisher and Frey help teachers understand how to bring vigor to rigor. They teach us how to help students understand more from their complex texts -- greater understanding that will help to bring life and energy to each student′s reading. Rooted in solid research, this is book is a must-read for those grappling with how to translate the recommendations and mandates around text complexity from the Common Core into instructional practices." Author: Jennifer Serravallo author of Teaching Reading in Small Groups and Conferring with Readers"In a time when nearly every state has adopted the Common Core State Standards (CCSS), we need resources that show us how to support students in developing their full literacy potential. In this very practical and insightful book, Fisher and Frey examine how CCSS conceptions of text complexity are causing us to shift some of our ideas about reading instruction. Rigorous Reading is an important resource that will help teachers align reading instruction with the CCSS in powerful ways." Author: Linda B. Gambrell, Professor"This is a bold book. . . . Its genius, and its unique contribution, is in bringing the balance and the centeredness to this new game in town―the Common Core." Author: P. David Pearson, Professor of the Graduate School of Education

Frey and Fisher have provided a must-read addition to any teacher or district coordinator's library who is or will be implementing the CCSS. This very readable and practical book walks teachers through the cornerstones of close reading, complex texts, collaborative conversations, and scaffolding reading instruction to achieve a more thoughtful and analytic approach to the reading of literature and informational texts. What makes this book stand out is the support for professional development--summary charts, videos, and a professional learning guide in the back that can be used by principals or grade-level team leaders to introduce, practice, and refine the concepts and strategies in each section of the book. The learning guide contains video links and powerpoint slides to make the prep work easy for administrators. I highly recommend this book for all teachers, principals, and district reading coordinators. Thank you Frey and Fisher for another great addition to the field!

When my copy of Frey and Fisher's Rigorous Reading was delivered to my doorstep, I couldn't wait to dig in to the content. In fact, I was looking forward to a "rigorous read" of this latest book from two of my favorite authors. It did not disappoint. My copy is already tattered and loaded with sticky notes and notations I plan to refer back to and share. Rigorous Reading explains the "why" close reading is important while maintaining a practical, useful, and realistic stance.Rigorous Reading has enough practical information to satisfy the individual classroom teacher looking for fresh ideas, enough depth and breadth to be useful for teachers of all content areas, and a set of professional development modules which will assist reading leaders of all kinds in guiding teams, departments, and school districts toward strong reading growth in all students.Educators are currently facing a new set of standards and expectations for students of all levels. The phrase 'close reading' is a term currently heard tossed about in instructional circles nationwide, but it can bring with it confusion and misunderstanding. No longer can the teaching of analytical reading skills wait until the upper grades or high level English courses. As the authors point out, 'close reading' should not be a concept exclusively taught by English teachers, nor is this deep and analytical reading merely about personal, emotional responses to the text. Complex texts abound across all curriculum areas. "If students are going to access complex texts, they must be given the time to read and reread, to respond to questions that encourage them to return to the text and to discuss their ideas in the company of others" (p 15).Frey and Fisher successfully provide access points to assist teachers of all levels in modeling, teaching, scaffolding, and assessing of close reading.

The information Frey and Fisher share in Rigorous Reading prompts thoughtful conversations that help teachers take immediate action in their classrooms. It helps refine our thinking about the Common Core and, more importantly, our teaching. The QR video footage provides immediate clarity on the how these practices look in action. This is a book focused on the how and the why. Fisher and Frey unlock how to work with complex texts. They identify the experiences and teaching students need in order to do this well and name how teachers can support them in this task. At the end of the book, there is a Professional Learning Guide to help literacy coaches, administrators, and others involved in professional development facilitate professional conversations about the five access points to complex texts. You will be glad to have this book by your side.

Practical. Powerful. Professional.Dr. Frey and Dr. Fisher come together once again and produce, what I believe, to be their most practical, powerful, professional development "manual" yet. It is centered around the need to increase literacy skills through the Gradual Release of Responsibility, student centered literacy instruction and student data discussions; knowing what the students will need to successfully navigate complex text. The content is well-timed and vital to literacy success in our schools. The imbedded QR codes make the text come to life and provide exemplar models for the reader. A hidden gem is in the back of the book which provides the much needed scaffolding for improved in-house professional development. The modeling of strong instructional literacy practices alongside the language of the CCSS is highly important and very timely. I wish I had this text 2 years ago! The power of teacher proficiency, increased student thinking and deep connection to complex text is embodied in this newest publication. It is a MUST have and a must read for literacy administrators, literacy coaches and curriculum and instruction personel. I believe you will want to share it with your colleagues, I know I will!

This has helped me get a handle on exactly what it means to be a "Common Core" teacher. It answers many questions that, despite all the exhausting professional development days, I still needed answered and a firm grasp of understanding what changes I need to make in my lesson planning for next year.

I love this book! The straight forward easy to comprehend information along with the video vignettes makes this a powerful resource! As a college professor that teaches reading courses to future teachers, I'm highly recommending this book to my students. My daughter is on her way to becoming a teacher and this is one of her Christmas gifts this year. Also, I work for a virtual school that is rolling out Common Core. I'm eagerly pursuing this as a school-wide "book talk" which I know will be attended by many teachers who refer to Dr. Douglas Fisher and Nancy Frey for latest greatest expertise in this dynamic shift occurring in education.

Amazon.com Review

The perfect first space book for those almost-readers, There's No Place Like Space takes us on a whirlwind tour of our solar system, with a few constellations thrown in for good measure. Cat in the Hat (along with beloved Thing One and Thing Two) straps on his space suit and rhymes his way among the nine planets, presenting important facts along the way. Where else could your preschooler learn phonics and astronomy at same time? "A planet can have satellites that surround it. Uranus has lots of these objects around it" is just one example. This is a fine addition to the library of any young stargazer--few books are written with this many facts furnished in such an easy-reading manner. (Preschool to early reader) --Jill Lightner

Kindergarten-Grade 3-Fans of Dr. Seuss's favorite feline will enjoy learning through rhymed couplets and cartoonlike illustrations similar to the originals. Each book combines basic facts with interesting trivia to introduce readers to topics that are sure to be of interest. From Bugs: "Here is a riddle/I learned from my mother./How's a skunk and a ladybug/like one another?/When danger is near,/it is easy to tell-/they suddenly give off/a terrible smell!" While the grammar is off, Seussian rhyme is rarely totally correct ("thunk"). In Space, readers learn, "On Venus the weather/is always the same-/hot, dry, and windy,/with no chance of rain." The familiar format and entertaining text are sure to appeal to beginning readers.Maura Bresnahan, Shawsheen School, Andover, MA Copyright 2000 Reed Business Information, Inc.

My grandaughter liked the book. I, myself don't care for the artwork, but I suppose children do. It is a good book for a youngster to learn to read.

Cute, toddler and preschooler both love it!

I am constantly trying to find ways to feed my 5 year old's love of space. He knows all the planets, many different aspects about each planet, their sizes, their moons, the notable stars, the black hole, comets, meteors, the ISS, you name it. I am amazed at his knowledge level and especially the fact that I didn't teach him any of it. The educational space videos on the Angry Birds space app deserve the credit for kicking off his knowledge and interest in space. I only came in later to supplement with reading materials and tangible visuals. Being an educator I understand the importance of taking advantage of children's love for learning. He is so welcoming of new scientific information that I would be amiss not to find various ways to entertain his brain with space facts.I purchased the National Geographic Kids First Big Book of Space (which is a book I wish I could give 10 stars - and I have a review on that page) and this Dr. Seuss book for Christmas. We have a deep love for Dr. Seuss in our home, and it just so happens that he and my son turned out to share the same birthday (random and useless fact :-). But I said that to say that my son also has a love for Dr. Seuss and feels like Dr. Seuss (whom he calls his friend) wrote all of his books just for him, LOL. The National Geographic book has vivid imagery, with the facts presented in more of an educational format with chapters, introductions, etc. so it is great for serious learning. This book (while not written by Seuss) follows in true Dr. Seuss fashion, with humor, fun words and phrases, creative rhymes, and laughable images. I like the mnemonics used to reinforce learning, though I was concerned about this because my son already knows the content and I did not want him to get confused. So far this has not been a problem. Even though the information is familiar, the Seuss-speak draws my son to this book day after day. It is one of his chosen books for bedtime reading. This book is creative, educational, accurate, and entertaining. Definitely a must-have for any little space lover.

I got this book for my 4 year old daughter who can read some of the words in the book. She loves to learn about the planets a basic introduction to the planets.

Very fun book the kids love. It's a great little introduction to space. I read it to them all the time and now they have began coloring the different planets. Something about the way the rhymes are so cute and simple that really help kids remember important science facts. Leave it to The Cat In The Hat to explain the way things work to kids. I highly recommend this book to parents of all age kids. These books are priceless to childhood.

I bought this as a gift for a 5 year old. He absolutely loves it! He is just starting to learn about space and is very excited to learn more. He screamed at the top of his lungs when he opened this! I got a "great pick" from the dad. The short sentences are perfect for this little guy who is starting to read and recognizing small words. The length of the book is great because it's long enough to be a story but short enough to keep his attention to learn to read.

This is a fun book! I am sad that it doesn't have Pluto anymore! :( But I guess Pluto is no longer a Planet! It will always be to me though! Other then that, i loved this book! Its a great way to teach your kids the planets.

Book arrived in perfect condition and is newly updated to where pluto is not included in the book.It is factually accurate and perfect for my son's space-themed nursery. The familiar characters of The Cat in the Hat, Thing One and Thing Two take you on a journey though our solar system in a way that's easy and fun for young children to understand.

I purchased this as a gift for my one year old nephew. He has EVERYTHING a spoiled 1 year old could ever POSSIBLY want. TYPICALLY IT'S A GIFT CARD "GIFT" for me, but wanted to do something different. Took a chance on this and added the Dr Suess Space book.... Such a hit!!! His 3 year old sister enjoys it too.(double whamie!!))) and she is learning to read to her little brother while viewing the Stars!!..above their heads!!!...so far so good.... yet we will see....
