I agree with many of the others that this is not a beginner's "how to" book, but it has a lot of great examples to use if you are interested in improving Manga drawing technique. There is a wealth of examples in the book, to include "chibi" figures- "squashed", childlike figures. Again, the drawback is that there is very little step-by-step done, so an absolute beginner who has no experience with proportions and form may not like this book as much as I did.

This product was excellent. If only the book was longer so the author could write even more!

I have several of Hikaru Hayashi's books and they are all really good - this one is no exception. Lots of good reference material and instruction. Its not really for a beginner - but great for a bit more advanced artist. Shows how to draw hair, eyes, and many, many poses.

Nice book with alot of good references for aspiring drawers in the ways of anime/manga. My only complaint is there isn't alot of variety with different body types, they are all very same-ish.

I'm not an expert mangaka, so I couldn't really use some of the things in this book, but even so, my art has improved dramatically. I still can't figure out the nuances of the poses, but the proportions of my characters, and the clothes that they wear are much better. Even if you are new to manga art I suggest this.WARNING:Naked women in sexy poses. Not a good idea for little kids.

it's a book...accurate description

I was given this book as a gift from my mentor during my first year of teaching high school, and haven't stopped using it since. I teach 8th grade at the moment, and this can easily be modified and used in middle and high school as well as college. It is the definitive text for argumentative writing. It has a collection of sentence stems/starters'templates for every circumstance (e.g. agreeing with a rebuttal) as well as a section devoted to transitions, verbs for making a claim, etc. It takes much of the guesswork out of writing an argumentative essay. We know that writing at the college level is expository or argumentative. This is the one book you need to get in order to write well. That's what I SAY. And that's what THEY SAY.

I have always thought of writing as a form of unilateral communication lacking any sort of feedback mechanism. Looking at writing as some form of conversation, as Graff and Birkenstein point out in “They Say, I Say”, was therefore different yet refreshing in many respects.For some, academic writing can be no different than a “foreign language” and in that regard, the structure and templates provided in the book serve to significantly reduce the learning curve associated with academic writing. As for the criticism on whether templates serve to stifle creativity, I would argue that some forms of writing require more structure compared to others, which is why templates tend to serve well for such forms.I thoroughly enjoyed reading through the book and can definitely foresee the need of referring back to it over and over again.

This is a great book to help teach students how to frame arguments. This is my third copy. I lost one loaning it out at work (I'm an educator), another I gave to my younger brother when he went away to college. I bought it again to use with Kelly Gallagher's "Staying true to what works in the ELA classroom".The sentence frames really are the most useful aspects of this book. I have to teach argumentative writing and the frames help me to model good writing to my students. It's a great tool to have on hand. Short and sweet.

I am writing my dissertation for my doctorate and this book is GREAT because it helps with writers block. It gives you phrases to help you get your thoughts going. It is extremely well organized and has been mentioned in several You Tube instructional videos I have watched.

I would definitely recommend this book to anybody who is trying to write more effectively. My professor required us to purchase this book since it was used heavily throughout the semester, which i'm glad she did, because "They Say/ I Say" provides very helpful details/examples to help strengthen your writing. The title pretty much how the whole book is formatted. It begins with telling you the rights and wrongs then proceeds to explain how what "they say" can be worded. After reading the "they say" section of the text it'll move on to I say which is of course your reason of support or contradiction.Although this was used in a college course, most of the reading was structured to easily be able to understand. As this book included many 'how not to' examples I found myself relating to much of that category. Overall, I found this book very helpful and would recommend this book if you want to make your writing more effective especially in the argumentative side.

This book is well written, easy to understand and will really help you in writing better for English classes or writing in general. Great tips, easy to follow and comes with examples. This book was bought for my class, and everyone in my class said the same thing, they that they learned a great deal from this book. Dont worry about what revised book you get, they are pretty much the exact same.

I adopted this for my English Comp class, but it could be usefully assigned for students at any stage of higher education, through graduate school. I'll start by saying that, like several other reviewers, I was privileged to study under Dr. Wright at Gordon College a very long time ago (I graduated in 1970). Next I'll say that nothing in this book deviates from the testimony, both scientific and theological, of the Dr. Wright I knew back then. I majored in Chemistry and, although we didn't have formal "minors", I probably had the equivalent of a minor in Biology. My wife and I read in the car (well, she reads out loud while I'm driving), and this was one of our "car reads." It was readable enough to absorb in this manner, and it stimulated several discussions of the issues between us. This book is written for those who have been confronted with the error that Christian faith is antithetical to a pursuit of scientific knowledge. As he did so many years ago, Dr. Wright takes us through scientific study, Biology in particular, as another revelation of God and God's Creation.I will admit that I was a bit disappointed in his treatment of some of the ethical issues surrounding biological inquiry. Those seeking definitive answers in this area will be disappointed. Dr. Wright tiptoed around the question of when human life is or should be fully protected, for instance. But a thorough discussion of ethics from a scientific perspective would require a far longer book which I would love to see Dr. Wright attempt, perhaps in collaboration with a noted Christian ethicist. Still, his overall treatment opens lines of thought and inquiry which can assist in the reader's journey toward a more enlightened understanding of these issues.For those who seek absolutes, the concept of continuous discovery and thought evolution is anathema. For those of us in the sciences who always question, for whom faith really means faith (as opposed to certainty, which is the opposite of faith), Dr. Wright's tome is a refreshing exposition of the many issues in the biological sciences that require us to be good and faithful stewards of Creation - no matter what process brought about that Creation.

Excellent. Possibly the best integration of faith and learning I've ever read. Wright lays everything out in an easy and understandable way. The book flows and is relative to for both science and faith.

This book was balm to my soul. If you are caught between the Christian and scientific communities, you will find solace in this book. Dr Wright does an incredible job explaining different Christian perspectives on Scripture and origins. Somehow, he manages to explain each Christian viewpoint with respect even when he makes his personal view evident. More importantly, he shares the joy he finds in delighting in God's creation and seeing the qualities of God in the study of life. He extends this into how we as Christians should respond. We should of course praise God and be good stewards of creation.

This bok is really great. It compares and contrasts the knowledge behind science and faith. You don't get to see this much in today's learning environment.

for Christians studying biology and struggling with conflict between what they believe and what they are asked to learn. I have a dog-eared and valuable (to me) pre-publication copy of the first edition of this book that Dr. Wright himself gave me. I was one of his students many years ago when he taught Ecology and Evolution. That book helped me immensely, although I don't think I ever properly thanked him at the time. We used it in a discussion class my senior year, and it was wonderful to be able to talk with the author, even though I eventually came to my own conclusions on the matter of creation/evolution. It's greatest strength isn't in giving you the answers, because thinking for yourself was always paramount at the Christian college where I met Dr. Wright, but the book makes it clear that these difficulties make it even more important that Christians understand the issues in order to be good stewards. I teach at a secular college now, but I'm still going to recommend this book to my students that are struggling with this issue.

About the Author

Linda S. Fazio, PhD, OTR/L, LPC, FAOTA was born and lived her early life on a wheat and dairy farm in Southeast Kansas, where she attended a one-room school as the only student in her grade for 8 years. From there, she went to a small rural high school, and then received a scholarship to Ottawa University, Ottawa, Kansas, to study poetry and art, then to the University of Kansas in Lawrence, Kansas as an art and craft major. Her path then led to occupational therapy. She received her Bachelor’s Degree in Occupational Therapy, Psychology and Sociology in 1964 from Texas Woman’s University in Denton, Texas. Her first employment was with the Veteran’s Administration Medical Center in Northampton, Massachusetts, as a psychiatric staff occupational therapist. It was here that she started her first community-based program with a pottery production workshop for outpatient veterans. Following her marriage to then–psychology doctoral student Anthony Fazio, her work moved to the Boston, Jamaica Plain, Veterans Administration Medical Center. When her husband accepted a faculty position at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Dr. Fazio began employment at Curative Workshops in Milwaukee as a home rehabilitation therapist. At this time, she began graduate studies toward an MFA in fiber arts and began teaching weaving and fiber art for the Shorewood Opportunity School in Milwaukee. About this time, she realized that her interests were swinging toward historical textile production and she entered graduate studies in anthropology, where she received her MS degree in Anthropology with a specialty in Museology/Textile Conservation in 1977. Her work as an occupational therapist moved to St. Michael’s Hospital, Milwaukee, as a psychiatric therapist, and Coordinator of Volunteers which gave her more flexibility as she raised her two daughters and attended graduate studies. In 1977, she moved back to Texas Woman’s University as an Instructor in Occupational Therapy and began doctoral studies in Counseling, Higher Education/Medical Education, and Administration. She received her Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) license and began a part-time practice in counseling and occupational therapy with a group of Psychology Associates. She received her PhD from the University of North Texas in Denton in 1985. The following year, she completed Post-Doctoral study in Sexuality and Disability at the Texas Institute of Rehabilitation and Research in Houston; at this time, she was an Associate Professor of Occupational Therapy at Texas Woman’s University and Assistant Dean. In 1987, she came to the University of Southern California in Los Angeles and began to teach and develop a course in community program development that has continued to the present. Her roles at USC have been full-time teaching and administration. She has held the administrative roles of Academic Fieldwork Coordinator, Coordinator of the Professional and Undergraduate Programs, Assistant Chair, Director of Post-Professional and International Students, and, most recently, Associate Chair of Academic and Community Program Support and Development. Dr. Fazio has previously published the first and second editions of Developing Occupation-Centered Programs for the Community and has co-edited two editions of Play in Occupational Therapy With Children with Dr. Diane Parham. She has also authored numerous chapters and articles. She has consulted widely in occupational therapy and occupational therapy assistant program design and curriculum development and has initiated many new academic programs over the course of her career. She has been a continuous member of the American Occupational Therapy Association volunteer sector since 1978, serving as an Accreditation Evaluator, Chair of the Commission on Education, and member of various appointed and elected committees. She has received 43 service awards from the American Occupational Therapy Association.

Amitav Ghosh was born in Calcutta and spent his childhood in Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and northern India. This book takes its title from the first line of Shelley's poem "Ozymandias": "I met a traveller from an antique land". None of the other reviewers, for whatever reason, have mentioned this extremely piquant fact. The reason for its piquancy is that Ghosh here explores the same theme as Shelley does in his poem: The passing of all things earthly.Though it is more evident in Shelley's poem, the dual narratives in the book, one set in Aden, Malabar and other entrepots of a millennium past, one amongst the "fellahs" of Egypt in the decade leading up to the Persian Gulf War in 1990, point the reader to contemplate the ever-shifting sands of history and temporality, the ever-changing relationships of religion to religion, country to country, person to person.The passage on Malabar, once a great trading centre, is exquisite:"There is nothing now anywhere in sight of the Bandar to lend credence to the great mansions and residences that Ibn Battuta and Duarte Barbosa spoke of. Now the roads and lanes around the wharfs fall quiet after sunset; shipping offices shut their doors, coffee-shops pull down their shutters, and only a few passengers waiting to cross to the sand-spit remain. The imagination balks at the thought that the Bandar once drew merchants and mariners from distant corners of the world."And, likewise, at the end of the book, during the onset of the Gulf War, when a great exodus of Egyptians - including Ghosh's friend Nabeel - are trying to make it back into Egypt, the scene portrayed on the TV set, conveyed in the last sentence in the book, is equally Shelleyan:"There was nothing to be seen except crowds: Nabeel had vanished into the anonymity of History." Though, at points, annoyingly disjointed, this volume manages - when considered as a whole - to convey the fleeting nature of human endeavour and so to remain true to its title's source.

The author had spend time in Egypt in the early eighties doing fieldwork for a D.Phil thesis while a graduate student in Oxford.Amitav Ghosh was born in Calcutta in 1956 and raised and educated in Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Iran, Egypt, India, and the United Kingdom, He presented his thesis in Oxford in 1991 entitled ``Kinship in Relation to the Economic and Social Organization of an Egyptian Village Community''. In An Antique Land is effectively a rewriting of the ethno- graphic material of the thesis, but with a completely revolutionized focus.Amitav Ghosh was able in this book to present to the reader a completely different text than the traditional ethnographic texts. He is a real master of story telling and character creation. The Egyptian village that he studied comes to life and his informants become real life persons with their feelings, beliefs, passions and hopes. As an Indian he is able to communicate with a society that has so much in common with his own and does not have the misunderstandings that sometimes slants the writings of Western anthropologists. As an Egyptian I found in this book the empathy that I find in my own heart towards my people and the stereotypes that sometimes colours our views of other cultures. But despite the differences Ghosh was able to present the portrait of Egyptian country side and the upheavals that it underwent over the next two decades after the Irak Iran war when Egyptians started to leave the villages to seek a better future abroad.I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in the dialogue between cultures and of the relationship between the West and Middle and Far East.

The world was multicultural before nation states, nationalism and the monomania that accompanied them. Very interesting view of how the world was before the Indian Ocean was militarized by Europeans.

Although I was immediately fascinated by the historical and literary detective story of the 12th century Jewish merchant and his Indian servant, I did not fully understand Ghosh's mission in writing this book until nearly at the end. Then it became clear to me. This book is an elegy for a way of life that is forever lost. In the 12th century, Jews, Muslims, and Hindus worked in tandem as traders and merchants, with the only reprisals being angry remonstrances rather than armed violence. What we call sophisticated Western civilization has changed all of that.Just as Portuguese and Dutch invasions of the Indian Ocean ended the medieval way of cooperation, the quiet life of the Egyptian villages in which Ghosh lived also ended -- within our lifetimes. As televisions and refrigerators came to those villages, so did anger, strife, and urbanization. There was money to be made during the Iran-Iraq war if you were a young Egyptian man, but you would never return to your village.This book was slow-moving in places but ultimately unforgettable.

Fantastic insight at an everyday, village human level into life in both contemporary and Medieval Egypt and the Malabar Coast. Beautifully written, scholarly but with finely drawn characters and vivid background. The birth of the current Middle-Eat disaster can be seen clearly described in this wonderful work.

I read this in conjunction with a course on Jewish communities under Islam from Mohammad to the end of the Middle Ages. This was most interesting, especially as regards source information from the Cairo Ben Ezra synagogue gineza. Without proper background, the reader may have a less rewarding experience.

Beginning with "Sea of Poppies" I was astounded at the breadth and depth of his research and at his extraordinary ability to maintain historical accuracy while weaving numerous individual's stories into a larger work of historical fiction.
