too much mistakes!this book could be better. look at the sample answers for chapter 8 alone. i have found more while reading it! the cost of this book is way too much for the mistakes.the content is however more than sufficient for the review but watch out for the mistakes!

Used for my 6-week CNA class. Didn't really use this book. I used the other more due to us doing hands on skills most of the course. Loved my teacher at HCC! This is a book for extra help. I am not sure if you'll use it during your class, but I didn't. Did help me on practice written test questions for the final though!

It is what I had to get for school. Nothing more but I like having it on phone makes it easier to carry around.

A lot of outdated science and methods. Not organized in the most usable manner. Much better tools are available, but this is sadly the required text for the course.

This book is easy reading and understandable. The colored pictures and detailed. A lot of information for Certified Nursing Assistance or to jump start a career in Nursing to be ahead of the game. Or, if you are just interested in the human body. Head first and enjoy

Robb's complex protagonist is Giulio Andreotti, while Stille's focus is the mother lode that is Silvio Berlusconi. Unlike Robb, Stille's no mere foreign visitor: his father, Ugo Stille, was former editor of Corriere della Sera, a notable holdout against Berlusconi's hegemonic advances through Italian media.The caustic venality of Berlusconi's takeover of government and the sputtering of Italy when the wheels start coming off around the time of the book's 2007 publication is depressing in its familiarity: here we sit six years later and Berlusconi - even when not ostensibly in the driver's seat - continues to dominate the stage with his machinations. Even in a world where "Bunga Bunga Party" and "Ruby Heartstealer" have entered the global 'wink wink, nudge nudge' lexicon, Berlusconi seems impermeable to both shame and loss of influence.Stille's triumph as a writer is to give the non-Italian reader a sense of why this guy is no mere buffoon. The personal fortune allows an otherwise unknown person with little or no political experience to immediately dominate the political campaign by buying massive amounts of television time."

If you want to read about a slick political sociopath this is your book. Berlesconi is a charming snake oil salesman without a conscience who ran for and won Italy's highest office because he wanted to maintain his dominant position with his three TV stations and avoid possibly going to jail. The author tries valiantly to be balanced but given Berlusconi's consistently dishonest, wheeler dealer behavior it was a tough job. It's worth reading because Berlesconi is doing exactly what the Koch brothers and others like them are doing here in the US. To know him is to know them. That is, rules don't count and money and power is all.

I hope this is not the future of democracy becasue I find it scary to contemplate. A well written, hard-to-put down book that is not difficult to follow. I found the last chapter particularly interesting as it pertains to US politics.Younger American readers who do not remember a less politicized media atmosphere may well wonder what the fuss is all about: Fox is the norm to them, and to many, the print media is a bastion of the left. If anything, the book reminds us that there is a difference between fact and opinion. A very timely read and, for those of us who love Italy, a very upsetting view of what politics in Italy has become.The only fault I found with the book is some repetition from chapter to chapter with respect to examples/quotes, although this may be because the chapters could have been printed separately in various publications. Still a worthwhile read.

I lived in Italy from 97-2005 I left because it was getting hard to live there. Silvio is a charming personality you love him even though you knew what he is. The book gave me a better understanding of what and why things became hard financially.

I recived the book from Amazon just a short while ago. I started it and could hardly put it down. What an incredible job Stille has done!To make order and organize all the material, on this endless italian tragedy, must have been an Herculean task. The story is told with clarity and rivetingprose, with richness of facts and documentation and from a perspective that is historical and not detached, caring and profoundly analytical. This book is of great relevance not only for Italian readers but for Americans as well.I agree with the author through the whole book and admire his work. I thank him for it.

Well worth reading, a bit of a scientific classic. It is interesting to see how much was known and speculated about the likely nature of the carrier of genetic information, even before DNA was discovered. The author also has some interesting philosophical and religious speculations, though he remains grounded in the scientific consensus of the day, for the most part. This relatively short and inexpensive book should become part of any scientifically literate person's background reading, IMHO.

In this review the focus is on Schrodinger's influence in bringing together physics and biology, which continues today. In effect he indirectly encourages such things as current genetics and neurology, which can be seen in the work of researchers like James D. Watson, the co-discoverer of the double helix orientation of DNA, and also the cutting edge neurological work of Antonio Damasio and embodied cognitive science. As in Schrodinger, they inevitably end up in the next stage after physics and biology coalesce, which is to say, cultural and ethical territory. Any reader of What is Life? can see this coming. Schrodinger is still good reading today in diverse interdisciplinary fields. He was indeed a man far ahead of his time.

He goes to great length to look at the atoms and molecules of DNA and builds an argument statistically about them and how they build the genome,but it's hard for a lay person to understand. It seems like they violate the rules of chance but I'm not sure. It almost seems like he isn't sure either. I will have to go back and read it again because often my mind and eyes just glaze over.It's a hard read but worth it to get a physicists perspective on a deeply philosophical subject.Schrodinger's cat in Wikipedia is a good read about his mind.

In spite of the new advancements in genetics that supersede some of the notions addressed, this book remains fundamental to science and for anyone with an interest in biology, physics and chemistry.Published in 1944, nine years before the discovery of the structure of DNA, this book was written after a series of lectures given by Erwin Schrödinger. It is intended to the general reader, as it offers detailed explanation of the topics, however, it must be read carefully because of the complexity of the issues. Schrödinger answers the question of how can physics and chemistry explain the events that take place in living organisms. As a physicist's he is very humble, given that he is approaching a topic outside of his expertise area, however his insight is brilliant. He makes a theoretical prediction and based on sound arguments he proposes an "aperiodic crystal" that contains genetic information.This reprint edition is completed with a nice preface by physicist Roger Penrose, but the highlight is the accompanying text Mind and Matter, also by Schrödinger. This offers a great finale, with a philosophical discourse dealing with consciousness, free will and determinism.

This book is divided into two parts: What's Life (7 chapters) and Mind and Matter (6 chapters).The physicist's most dreaded weapon, the mathematical deduction can not be used for life because it is too complex to be accessible to equations. The orderliness required for the preservation of life does not come by the random heat motions of atoms and molecules, but statistical averages that provide order. Schrodinger asks a simple question; why is life made of so many atoms and not just a few. He offers three examples; higher magnetic fields, increase in molecular population and the error introduced into a reaction rate constant or any other physical parameter would be far too great if only few molecules are involved to form life. Hence orderliness, and of course evolution and diversity of life, requires very large population of molecules.The world is a construct of our sensations, perceptions, memories; all existing objectively and all scientific knowledge is based on sense of perception and nonetheless the scientific views of material processes formed in this way lack all sensual qualities and can not account for the latter. Theories that are developed from scientific observations of experiments never account for sensual qualities. The sentient, percipient and thinking ego does not figure anywhere in our world picture, because it is itself the world picture. It is identified with the whole and not part of it. The physical world lacks all the sensual qualities that go to make the subject of cognizance. It is colorless, soundless, and impalpable. The world is deprived of everything that makes sense in its in relation to the consciously contemplating, perceiving, and feeling the subject; no personal god can form part of world model that has only became accessible at the cost of removing everything personal from it. God is missing from spacetime picture like sense of perception or ones own personality. Upanisads (Hindu Scripture) states that Atman = Brahman, the personal self equal the all comprehending eternal self. Consciousness never experienced in plural only in the singular, and plurality is merely a series of different aspect of one soul and one conscious produced by a deception (Maya). There is no multiplicity of minds; in reality and truth there is only one mind.Before and after is not a quality of the world we perceive but pertains to the perceiving mind and don't imply the notion of space and time. After relativity, the notion of before and after reside on the cause and effect relationship. The general directedness of all happenings is explained by the mechanical or statistical theory of heat. The Second Law of Thermodynamics states that order changes to disorder but not disorder to order, and time travels in one direction from past to future, but not future to past. The statistical theory of time has a stronger bearing on the philosophy of time than theory of relativity. The latter presupposes unidirectional flow of time while statistical theory constructs from order of events.My body functions according to laws of nature, but I direct body motions. The word "I" means to state that I who control the motion of the atoms and molecules according to the Laws of Nature. The uncertainty principle and the lack of causal connection in nature introduce certain features into physical reality. For example, we can not make any factual statement about a physical system without interacting with it which would change the physical state of the system. This explains why no complete description of any physical object is ever possible. These laws have pushed the boundary between the subject and object. In fact subject and object are only one, and no barrier exists. It is the same element that goes to compose my mind and the world. The situation is the same for every mind and its world, in spite of the unfathomable abundance of cross references between them. The world is given to me only once, not one existing and one perceived.The last chapter gives brief autobiographical sketches of Schrodinger translated by his granddaughter. Schrödinger was deeply philosophical with strong family: He loved and respected his parents. Sloan's "Eve of Destruction," Country Joe McDonald's "I-Feel-Like-I'm-Fixin'-to-Die Rag"—the songs became anthems that defined a generation, confirming the idea that popular music could indeed bring people together to promote a common cause for the common good. Sadly, British music critic Lynskey doesn't capture the deep significance of the protest song or the cultural moments that created them. Although he admirably attempts to isolate the personal and cultural contexts of 33 protest songs, from Billie Holiday's "Strange Fruit" and James Brown's "Say It Loud—I'm Black and I'm Proud" to the Clash's "White Riot," Public Enemy's "Fight the Power," and Steve Earle's "John Walker's Blues," Lynskey doesn't fully demonstrate the reasons that each song qualifies as a protest song in the first place, or why the songs he gathered provide the best examples of a protest song. I am no historian, and I am not much of a music-love, but I read this book on a recommendation.I enjoy Lynskey's writing style. He manages to pack a lot into each chapter and gave me a lot of new insight into the impact of the music he was discussing as well as the context in which it was written and a bit of history on the events and culture of the time. I learned a lot about the songs, the artists and each chapter was like a snapshot of the era it was discussing.However, some chapters seemed to barely discuss the title song of the chapter or even the artist. He'll discuss all of the political events going on and other artists and songs and then finally mention the song the chapter is titled for.This didn't really detract from the book, overall, in my opinion. While a thick book, I consider it a light read. Each chapter pretty self-contained. You don't have to read them all or in order if you don't want to, so it's an easy book to pick up occasionally and take your time with or at the same time as other books.

A good 80% of the bands I never even heard of and about 90% of the songs I never heard of. Can't be a good protest song if the mainstream public never hears them. Many protest songs I HAVE heard of were barely touched on or not mentioned at all. And there was WAY too much profanity, the f word in particular. Wish I could get my money back, but at least I got it on sale rather than at the regular price.

I realize that 5 starts is the max, however, for me this book hit all the marks. It uses just over 30 songs spanning from the late 1930s until the early 2010's as catalysts for a myriad of songs, artists and styles that created what can be called protest music. The writing is crisp and concise and includes dozens upon dozens of quotes from the artists themselves. Lynskey's voice as historian is strong as he succeeds in not only putting each song in context of the social and historic times in which it was written or propagated, but he also places these songs as complements, contrasts and comparisons to other ages and eras of pop music, politics and culture. Lastly, I was glad that he accounts for his scope in the introduction where he lets us know that he will be covering specific areas of the world, but not the entire planet! The U.S., UK, Jamaica and Africa are well documented and pleasingly fills the text. I would be curious how he would cover Pussy Riot's story as they are a realized culmination of so many aspects of so many artists that he covers in his book.

This is really well done, better than I thought it would be. No pandering here; Lynskey assumes a reader of intelligence and knowledge, and gives strong opinions. The chapters are long and engaging, and he really puts you in the era and context. Highly recommended.

No one interested in how pop-culture affects society, a vastly ignored subject by social scientists, can afford NOT to include this on their bookshelf. Linsky quite humbly invites us to share his assessment of music concerned with politics and humanity, with great competence and great humility. The printed book includes a fine set of photographs.

Well written, fascinating although scattergun approach to protest songs. Author rather wisely avoids going back too far in history and does a great job providing context for each song.

This is A, rather than THE, history of protest songs.At its best, the book is informative. Even if you hate a particular song and/or artist, the author manages to keeps one's interest in reading about it/them. In part this is due to his scatter-shot approach, encompassing eras and genres. It is also well-researched.Where it fails is in the balance of history. There are far too many relatively recent songs included. That Phil Ochs wasn't granted a chapter, while Frankie Goes To Hollywood was, is criminal. Broadside magazine is hardly even mentioned, while the author goes out of his way to include an obscure disco song, as well as U#2's "Pride (In The Name of Love)," which isn't even a protest song but, rather, a song of celebration. So why include it? I suspect it's for the same reason that the book is so laden with relatively recent songs, that the main concern was the bottom line. Most people will want to read about songs that they're familiar with.So the blues, a form of music that, by it's very nature, is a protest, is totally ignored. Part of this is probably due to the author's definition of protest music, which he links to politics. There are, of course, other forms of revolution, such as cultural and social, but the author chooses to put blinders on concerning them. Still, I'd much rather have read something about the "Bourgeois Blues" than "Two Tribes."Even among the modern music the author does highlight, there is some head-scratching on my part. Does Dorian Lynskey honestly believe that Huggy Bear is more representative of Riot Grrrl than Bikini Kill? Does he not believe that Patti Smith's song "People Have The Power" is even worth mentioning? Doesn't he see the implicit revolutionary aspect of the entire DIY culture / "indie scene," in which the "workers" have seized the means of production?This is still a worthwhile book. I learned quite a bit about such artists as Crass, Linton Kwesi Johnson, Victor Jara and Feli Kuti. While I would not say that it is at all definitive, it is a good start.

what I enjoed most about the book was the amazing and interesting stories beghind the songs. A history lesson of each song!
