I had to buy this book for a class I was taking in college and didn't think much of at the time. After having some time to read through it later I found it is full of very helpful concepts and priceless information to anyone looking to get into color photography. Unfortunately color film is a dying process, but none the less this is an excellent manual and useful even in the digital world we live in.

This book is a must have for anyone interested in color film and for those that are experienced in color film.

As a very amateur photographer, I'm trying to learn more about color theory. This wasn't what I was looking for. It is more of a book on color photography. I was looking for instruction on how colors interact with each other and the what they mean in an image.

Henry Horenstein, author of BLACK AND WHITE PHOTOGRAPHY: A BASIC MANUAL, a book often used as a photography text book, has a similar book on color photography. COLOR PHOTOGRAPHY: A WORKING MANUAL offers the same excellent how-to information provide in the black and white counterpart. The book contains many of Horenstein's excellent photographs and offers information regarding filters and developing color prints. While it contains some information on color transparencies (slides), it is somewhat scant and may in the long run be more helpful for printmakers. At a time when digital photography is all the rage, this book is not obsolete since Horenstein's expertise will help ant photographer, no matter what the medium.

This book is well-written and lavishly illustrated with good-quality color photographs from a number of well-known contemporary photographers. The basic physics of color theory and color perception are well laid out. The text and explanations are easy to follow, even for a novice. Having taught color photography for a number of years, in the US and in France and Italy, I have found that this text to be the most consistently useful for my students.

this book is amazing. i grew up on dover books. they were something that my family could actually afford. i am an artist and find inspiration from these etchings. and they’re royalty free you can use them for anything!

Just as advertised this book has a huge variety of plants to work with. We will be using this book for tattoo reference and it is perfect for this purpose. The images could be used pretty much as is for blackwork. The only critique I have is the paper isn't the highest quality. I wouldn't recommend it for a "high traffic" library. There are two artists in our household so this won't be the case for us. The paper quality is the same for any paperback book you will buy on Amazon, the prices are GREAT but the paper is a little easier to tear. It's a trade off I can easily live with. Great buy for a quieter library.

Gorgeous large illustrations, neatly organized by categories. LOVE how every item is conveniently identified in the index (maybe a handful of the 2400 are labeled unidentified)--very easy to look up the item in the index, it's organized by page and each illustration is assigned a number. I also love how there's extra sections for plant related stuff like ornate pots, green houses, and plants as frames like borders. Overall, excellent purchase.

I love the Dover Pictorial Archives Series and this book is a fine example of the copyright-free images that Dover offers in these books. Jammed full of beautiful black and white drawings in fine detail this could be the one book in your library to cover all your botanical needs. But it won't be. Once you see this book you'll want to add more Pictorial Archives Series books to your library.

2400 illustrations, black and white, in a medical style of execution. Medical style is a detailed drawing with precise inked linework. Includes a section of floral borders. Fruits, veggies, fungus, vases, gardening tools, gardening related imagery.

Dover at its best: Clean, crisp line art and etchings drawn from many royalty-free sources. Exoticism and botanical accuracy combined. Useful in advertising or graphic art.

I use this book to copy plants and flowers for artistic purposes and have used a few already. There are some really beautiful drawings and you can see all the details that go into that particular one. Never run out of ideas!

I love how simple the planner is but when it arrived it was bent and had stuff all over it and will not come off. I plan to keep it because of the price but wouldve been nice if I didn’t look used!

Couldn't of been a more perfect announcement!! I bought the book and gave it to her for my grandchild who's due to arrive in February!! The book is cute.....although it doesn't have the phrase in it.

I am a professional artist and calligrapher specializing in various scripts and languages. I first learned Persian (Farsi) calligraphy in grade school in Iran--along with having to memorize works by Iran's great poets. I cannot claim any greatness in my prowess in either skill at that time, but persistence and practice pay off in the long run. I love Rumi's poetry. Wonderfully, much of the English-speaking world now also loves Rumi, thanks to the translations by Coleman Barks and others. The problem: it is very difficult to match up the English translations with the original Persian poetry. This is complicated by the fact that Barks and others do not always offer actual translations. Often the poetry in English--beautiful and powerful as it is--is made up of selected lines from various places in Rumi's original, or is inspired by Rumi's poetry. Many times the language is changed so that the meaning is translated to a different time and place. This book is just what I have been looking for: each poetry selection is given in the original Farsi (Persian) language. There follows a translation as literal as possible. Each word that has been added in English to clarify the sentence structure or meaning is put in italics. Notes follow to explicate context, explain specific words, give alternate translations, etc. This book is scholarly yet eminently usable. Now, if only we had this for the entirety of Rumi's works! Ibrâhîm Gamard has given us a rare gift in these times of rampant translators who claim to have done authentic translations of Rumi's work, he has produced along with A. G. Rawân Farhâdî a masterful and faithful rendering of the Quatrains of Mawlana. Accurate translations of a large body of Rumi's work to English are rare as we have been fed revisions mostly of Nicholson's work by those who have no knowledge of Persian or other language translations of this great poet. Gamard and Farhâdî have done justice to the field of Persian to English translation of this part of Rumi's cannon of work. Some may find the Quatrains in this volume too literal, but isn't turning lines that are close to what Rumi said into our own heart's poetry part of Mawlana's original intent in offering them? This reader of "The friend of our Friend" has experienced the truth of this, as in No. 565 from this book: "If a thorn bush appears on top of my grave, The thorn bush will still be desirous of you." As I read this I hear: Even though I will be dead, and my soul sent Home, my body will still try to reach You, my Love. This book is both a scholarly effort as well as a labor of love on the part of the authors as they worked to bring Rumi alive for us. If the translations are to be placed in doubt, the Persian from early texts is given in a parallel format for those who know the language. Footnotes abound and an extensive appendix make this a necessary volume to sit next to the efforts of Annemarie Schimmel and William Chittick's endeavors. If you add Nicholson, Arberry and Gamard's translations from his website Dar Al Masnavi, very little else will be needed to feed your heart and soul with the words of the poet whom God took into God's very presence, and never let go. I love the book. I have several works on or about Hazrat Rumi. This is by far one of the best. There has been a 'Rumi craze' in the West for quite some time. I find that many of his admirerers do not associate him with his Islamic faith, but that is the essence of his work. This work has notes throughout the book with the quatrains so that the reader can get a clearer understanding of the work. Unfortunately, too many have translated his works without an understanding of Persian and without an understanding of his background and the purposes for which he wrote. This is clearly evidenced in the foreword, written by the 22nd generation direct descendent of Hazrat Rumi. who writes: "...And they interpret [his] thoughts and ideas by using their own points of view, which then creates a different Mevlana than the one who actually lived....This saddens me greatly....In spite of this...I thank them---while requesting that they exercise more care in the future."

I find this collection and translation to be an extremely valuable and reliable resource at a time when so many of Rumi's mistranslations are being shared. I use this book and highly recommend it to everyone including my students in the In The Footprints of Rumi [...] course that I teach both live and online. This work is a labor of LOVE!

I'd like to thank the scholars responsible for this translation for correcting the understanding popularized by men like Coleman Barks that Islam actually has any connection whatsoever to peace or any place for us Kafirun other than our being subjugated or killed. Where I was once able to add a dissenting voice to those stating what an odious and hateful religion Islam is, I am no longer able to do that by citing Rumi. As I continually seek truth, I welcome this truth however bitter it may be.

I could kiss the person that came up with the idea for these "For Dummies" books. I have another QuickBooks guidebook that is about three times as thick as this one, but is nowhere near as helpful. Many things in QuickBooks are fairly easy to pick up on your own without needing anything more than the brief tutorials that already come with the software. Still, it is always nice to be able to pick up tips, tricks, and shortcuts that will make using the program faster and more efficient. I purchased the other QuickBooks guide for that reason. While it was a great book for teaching someone how to use the software, it didn't exactly do it in a very good user friendly way. That's why I really like this For Dummies book. It strips away the unnecessary jargon, trims the text so that instead of getting a huge paragraph with only one sentence of usable information you get a brief paragraph that gives you the pertinent information and nothing more. While the other book was a good teaching tool, it was sloooooooow helping the new user (me) reach a point where I felt comfortable with the program. QuickBooks For Dummies teaches you from the start in an easy to read, easy to understand, and easy to implement way.If you are totally new to QuickBooks, read this book BEFORE you dive in and set up your files/accounts. This way you will have a better idea of the best way to shape the software to fit your needs. If you are a current QuickBooks user and got this book because you are updating to the latest and greatest version, then feel free to check out the Table of Contents first to see where your main concern is discussed so you can go right to it. I would have really liked a CD with this book so that I could do a quick file search on my laptop rather than leafing through the book when I have a question. It's a minor annoyance having to stop, grab the book. look up the topic, find the page, read through the page to find what I want, then try out what I just read. First world problems, right?I'm by no means a QuickBooks expert, and this book was quite helpful for me. Anyone from a complete newbie to a pretty seasoned user should gain something from this book.

Author writes the book for someone who has an existing business merging into QB17 - which is fine. However, as someone with a completely new business I was trying to do the "smart thing" and start from the beginning to set up QB for my business. Pieces I needed were much later in the book (Chapter 7) which led to a large amount of rearranging of my chart/list of accounts. I have an accounting degree and have spent most of the last 2-3 years working in accounting/AP so the theories behind everything were not new to me. My advice, either skip around to things you need as you need them, or read the entire thing before trying to set up a new business.

I bought this book obviously to learn how to use QuickBooks and I unfortunately learned pretty much nothing. In my opinion, if you are fairly well-versed in accounting and could if need be set up a chart of accounts on a piece of paper and track all your purchases and sales by hand (in other words, are very good at accounting), then you will probably be able to read this book and learn the program. That is because all you would be looking to learn is where are the buttons are in the program. However, to be honest, I think most people who could do perfect accounting by hand probably don't need a book to help them learn the program as they can figure it our by themselves or with a few quick (and free) online tutorials. However I think an average person who understands the concepts of accounting for a small business (keeping track of expenses and income, accounts receivable and payable etc,) but probably has not put this knowledge to use, or maybe have only been doing very basic accounting in excel or just on paper, would need a lot more instruction than this book offers. It really seems to be just a book written to help you find where stuff is, which after a little while playing with it, is not all that hard (not as intuitive as it could be, but doable.) For example, the chart of accounts is really one of the most important things to get set up in the program and if you do not do it correctly, all your numbers will be messed up and will be very hard to fix. However, it simply lists things you might want in your chart of accounts with no other information. In summary, if you are not 100% positive of your accounting skills to begin with, get a different book. I ended up paying for an online video tutorial and it was much much better. One other note, Although there is a section in the beginning on accounting, it explains such basic introductory information. If you have never heard the word accounting, you may get some useful information from it, however, if you have never heard the word accounting, you should not be using this program. You NEED to understand accounting, and understand it well, in order to use this program. There is not nearly enough information provided in that section to teach you everything you need to know in order to keep your own books for a small business.

I thought this book would go into more detail in the different ways to make journal entries, setup cash accounts, make various journal entries, set up payroll, etc, This book skims Accounting with Quick Books, it is a very general instruction and the lousy QB prompts do as well as having the book. I was really looking for more depth into Quick Books more than double-entry booking. The payroll part is only 9 pages and basically repeats the on screen prompts, with no additional information. I have found QB to be very user UN-friendly, and it is very hard to undo mistake entries. I really wanted a book that helped me in that part of using QB.I think the author needs to write a book that has more "trick-of-the-trade" and hints, go-bys the help in setting up or making certain Journal entries. Why does the author have to discuss double-entry bookkeeping, as most that use QB would have more of an accounting background. For the novice there are other accounting programs that would serve them better than QB.

This is where my disclaimer always goes. Usually it says something like, I got this book from Netgalley, or the publisher sent it to me. However, this book needs a disclaimer that is a little more … involved . I was already a fan of this author’s YouTube channel, I am no stranger to the information in this book, and I am myself an ex-Jehovah’s Witness. That being said I guess I’m not exactly an impartial reviewer. However, I feel that what Mr. Evans has to say is of significant import and so it deserves an honest, forthright review. A loooong review. Here’s mine.This book is of interest not just to fellow ex-JW’s (what we call ourselves), but also to those outside the faith. Maybe you have JW relatives. Maybe you pass a nice, smiling couple standing next to a literature cart on your way to work every day. Or perhaps, like most people, JW’s have come to your door in order to start a pleasant conversation with you about the bible. The Reluctant Apostate provides a comprehensive overview of the religion, it’s history and the issues surrounding it. There is a great deal of information in this book, and the author did extensive research into the facts presented. I’m impressed with the depth of understanding it displays. Even though I have spent 40 years As a JW, there are many facts about the religion that I have never known about. That is one of the problems.Jehovah’s Witnesses are a cult. There I’ve said it. I know that Jehovah’s Witnesses do not fit the idea we all have in mind about what a cult is. I wrote a post not long ago about another book Combating Cult Mind Control by Steven Hassan which goes into more information about the ways to identify a cult. Mind control is the way that a cult gets it’s fingers into you. I will list the 5 identifying marks of a cult, and give a brief overview of how Mr. Cedars shows that Jehovah’s Witnesses should be recognized as one.Behavior – The lives of JW’s are highly controlled. Their dress and grooming, what jobs they perform, their entertainment, the amount of time they spend studying Witness publications and witnessing to outsiders is all highly controlled. And then there is about their prohibition of holidays and their stand on blood transfusions (JW’s cannot have one even if they may die).Information – JW’s are not allowed to listen to any information about the Jehovah’s Witnesses unless it comes directly from Watchtower. This includes anything on the internet or from the news media. JW’s are not allowed to speak with people who have left the organization. You cannot even acknowledge that persons existence. Needless to say, lack of un-biased information is dangerous.Thoughts – All thoughts are to be regulated. Doubts about the religion are not tolerated. You can be brought before a Judicial Committee and expelled from the congregation for holding a different opinion from the Governing Body who controls everything. If you voice that opinion then watch out!Emotional – Guilt and fear figure mightily in this religion. No matter what you do in service of this religion, it is never, ever enough. JW’s are encouraged to spy and tattle on each other to the elders in the congregation for even minor offenses. JW’s are not allowed to speak with anyone who is expelled (disfellowshipped or disassociated), even if it is an immediate family member.Lloyd’s book delves into the history of the religion, from it’s infancy in the mid to late 1800’s and the makeup of the men who founded it. The book tracks the development of it’s belief system as well as the source of it’s greatest perversions of faith. Including it’s inherent misogyny, it’s disgraceful refusal to address a serious problem with child molestation in it’s ranks, and using emotional blackmail to keep people in line by holding family members hostage to an publishing organization. I have to admit, seeing how these things came together over the years is fascinating to an outsider, and harrowing to anyone who has spent years inside. People have quite literally died in service to this organization. In the 1940’s Nazi Germany, in the 1970’s in Malawi, and in recent times due to the ban on blood. All of which is touched on in Mr. Evans book.Leaving a cult is no easy thing. Mr. Evans details his own journey with painful honesty. You don’t just decide one day to do a thing like this. I woke up from my own indoctrination just a few months ago. It was a completely awful experience. Your mind tries so hard to force you back into your cocoon of indoctrination. The fight continues. I’m quite sure that no one ever really comes away from it without scars. I’m so much happier now, but it is an excruciatingly painful process. Thankfully, we have activists like Mr. Evans who is generous about his time, his compassion and his pain. He works to shed a light on the road, as we open our eyes and start to stumble out of the darkness. Because of this, and because of how much I’ve directly benefited from his activism, I cannot be a fully impartial reviewer of this book. But I can say read it. If you’re an outsider read it and wonder at how these things are possible. Excellent and enjoyable read that hits close to home for me. Well-reseached and a book I couldn't put down once I had read the first chapter. Writing a book is no small task, I'm sure, and to make it fascinating and to keep the reader hooked throughout is an even bigger task. Lloyd Evans has accomplished that well with his first venture at book writing. Any one with a reasoning mind can easily see the fallacies of the Watchtower organization over many years as presented here. Well done!

A fantastic journey for a former jehovah's Witness. Expertly written and easy to follow. The author writing about things most people refuse to discuss. Keep in mind that there are a good number of exJWs who hate this guy. They hate him because he speaks out against aggressive activism (Kingdom hall crashing) and he's also an atheist. So when you read the negative reviews realize the true bias going on.

Just finished reading Reluctant Apostate. It is an imposing 800 pages but well worth the effort. Llyod tells us his story from his early memories of growing up in the Jehovah's Witness religion or as he has come to realize the Cult. Like Lloyd I escaped this same cult after 60 pluse years. His story is an interesting read and he mixed it with his reasons for leaving the religion. There is a rather complete history of the religion along with its many scandels. Much of this I had read before in other books but he has a way of incorporating this into his awakening from the cult. The story gets somewhat personal at times but he holds nothing back in helping us to understand what it is like to grow up with the repressive rules and regulations of the JW's. We are taken through his teenage years and his early 20 and possibly to most trajic part of his life the death of his mother. His work of activism has been responsible for many exjw's waking up. This includes my wife and myself. There are some very practical suggestions for those who are waking up from undue influence namely his 3 R's.see page 667. I have read more than half of his recommend books for ex jw's and find something new and valuable in all of them. When you have been influenced by a controlling and destructive cult for most of your life you can never do enough reading and research. Good read Lloyd Evans looking forward to that pint someday.

I have learned so much about the religion I was born into. It has helped me educate my inactive father and drop knowledge on my JW mother. It is an easy read. Lloyd's writing style is very casual and keeps you interested. The Jehovah's Witnesses are so full of s**t. Their leadership - the governing body - is frighteningly controlling over their 8 million believers. I was a third generation JW on my mother's side and can't believe how much bs has been made up along the way called "new light" that comes from the governing body. The members eat it up unquestioningly. And if you disagree, you are an apostate and lose your friends and family by being disfellowshipped, as Lloyd has been. He intertwines his story perfectly. I highly recommend this book for people who want to know about the JW's, current JW's who want the truth about "the truth", and ex-JW's who want to know all about the cult they were in and be ever more grateful for leaving.

I really enjoyed reading this personal account of Lloyd Evans life and journey out of the Jehovahs Witnesses. Being raised a JW myself, I can relate to many of his experiences and feelings. I appreciate Lloyd Evans honesty, detailed explanations of Watchtower doctrine and personal experiences of others inside the organization. This book is, in my opinion, one of the best written pieces of literature since Crisis of Conscience, by Ray Franz, and it along with Lloyds website will continue to be instrumental in helping Jehovahs Witnesses awaken from their indoctrination.

Being Lao, the story and recipes in this book are reminiscent of my childhood and upbringing. Like any recipie, it’s always crafted to you the cooks taste. For me it’s refreshing to see a Lao cook book because much of Lao cooking really doesn’t involve measuring ingredients but knowing how to balance flavors on taste. This cook book is handy if I don’t want to call up my mom for directions for a certain dish. Overall the recipes are good guides to developing authentic Lao dishes and I would recommend to someone unfamiliar with the cuisine.

I like reading the stories, interesting reading. The recipes are just what I was looking for. Home style food from Southeast Asia. I am a big fan of the noodles and soups, especially when I can cook once and have food for a couple of days. I crave those flavors and textures.

I love this book. Having a number of connections with this part of the world helps I am sure. I have been to Laos twice,an Thailand twice. I know several refugee families for that area. Our kid spent a semester abroad there.The extensive biographical part of this book says alot about what first generation Americans must go through -with feet in two very different worlds.Some of the recipes are a challenge - not uncommon with foreign foods...but substitute of do without as the author and his Mom does.For example a pepper wood substitute is available.Google " Chilli wood, pepper wood Piper ribesioides Wall., Piper interruptum Opiz. ໄມ້ ສະຄານ mai sakahn, sakhan, sakharn, sakhahn, mai sakhaan" and you will find it.

Love the book. It’s very authentic. Everything in there is something my family would cook and I like that it’s not the stuff you see in typical restaurants. Can’t wait to actually trying cooking some of his recipes and redline it to what my taste buds like.

As a Lao person growing up in a very traditional Lao household, I can say this book is very legit! So many beautiful photos of traditional lao cuisines that most people dont talk about. Whats the difference between Lao food and Thai food? Thai food is very pretty. Pretty presentations, pretty names, and pretty ingridients. Lao food is the nitty gritty! The names and presentations arent as pretty, but the food is soo good!! The colors, the smells! We arent afraid to use the less than savory stuff!! This book captures the beautiful, complex flavors of Laos! If you’re adventurous, try some Lao cooking! Your tastebuds will thank you... and this is a great book to start your adventure!

Holy cow - this is a GREAT book. Not just because of the superb, unique recipes, but also because of the excellent instructions. Please write more books like this!

The book is divided into two parts, first a bio of the author then recipes. Throughout the book food and its relationship to the Lao culture is discussed. The recipes are accompanied by descriptions of the ingredients and which brands we find in our stores work best. I really loved this book! The cover is impervious to food spills.

Absolutely love this book. Always wanted to cook Lao food but asking a Lao mom how much measurement for everything is nearly impossible. We’ve tried so many dishes from this book and everything has been really good! Tastes just like moms cooking. Easy to follow instructions and beautiful photography. If you grew up in the US and are used to very potent Asian flavors this is the book for you.I skipped the stories because I just want to make food. First dish doesn’t actually start until 113 pages in.

Love the DK Eyewitness travel guides and have bought many of them. In this case we bought both the DK Eyewitness Boston and Top 10 Boston books in anticipation of guests coming to visit us now that we've relocated to the Boston area. We were hoping to find information about historic homes, public gardens, and other lesser known sites in the greater Boston area. Both of these titles are great for Boston proper; but the reason I gave them only 4 stars is that they only cover the city of Boston and in the outlying areas section Cambridge, Concord and Lexington. Unfortunately nothing on Salem, the North Shore, Plymouth and other surrounding areas of interest. If you are visiting Boston and intend to stay pretty much in town then these are good guides for you. If you are on a more extended stay and want to find out about the surrounding areas you will need to supplement with another guide.

Overall, I thought the book was pretty good. It seemed to be missing a few key items though - like a map of the Freedom Trail and there was no mention of Cheers. It's a huge attraction. I am also surprised it didn't recommend the GoBoston card, which gives you discounts to the major attractions. I stumbled across it while Googling Boston.

Great arrangement by city areas. Illustrations are very good and show many attraction highlights. DK Eyewitness is one of my preferred travel guides, and this one did not disappoint.

So you slowly can work yourself through the areas that really interest you by easily skipping things you would not want to see or visit at all.It also makes it easy to find the things that are important to you because the descriptions are small enough and pictures further make it easy to attract your interest or pass things by.The MINUS: 4 Stars!The good about the Maps is that they are there at all and also that there is an index of some streets.The contained foldout maps though helpful when there is nothing else at all are not my favorite because they are quite small and are more an overview to identify the area where something is to be found on a better more detailed map. The same maps as the foldouts are also on a separate map that is detachable. This is a good idea but they are way to small and hard to read especially in dim light and in an awkward format to be really useful. - When available, I rather get a local map from the tourist office and transfer my destinations to it.SUMMARY: 5 Stars!This guide is an extremely useful sightseeing guide and small enough to be carried with you all the time for quick reference. It also allows you to choose the amount of detail you want to follow for the town: top 10 Highlights - top 10 to each highlight - top ten to some general categories like museums, bars, hotels, restaurants, shopping, and also some specific categories just for this destination like best seafood restaurants or great walks and itineraries.Insider tips or as they call the sections: "Street smart" round up this little guide. The maps are OK but could be improved. The deficiency of the maps though should not detract from the overall usefulness of this guide for your destination. This is true for a first time visitor with limited or all kinds of time and also for the return visitor, who wants to to repeat some destinations in more detail or avoid the same old top ten but venture out into new territory.

I love DK Eyewitness guides. The photos are great and the tips wonderful. I always buy them before I go to a new place. Can't go wrong!

The book worked great for vacation in Boston. Used it most of the time rather than paying for a tour. I would buy from this company again.

The writing and graphics in this guide are meticulous. We have enjoyed these guides for European trips and it is interesting to see the style applied to a US destination.
