When I returned this to the library, the clerk looked at it and said, "We cannot keep this one on the shelves!" Small wonder. This book is one of the most extraordinary of the year. There really are no words to sum up how I feel about this story. It's literally and figuratively a heavy read. It may seem to be just a book about a girl who likes monsters but it's so much more. It's a heartbreaking story of a young girl, who visualizes herself as a werewolf, in a poor family and dealing with tragedy while at the same time curious about the death/murder of the tenant above her and and her horrifying past in Weimar and then Nazi Germany. (Note: This book really isn't for kidsThe artwork is phenomenal and goes at times from pencils to pen and ink. I have to admit that at one point, I even wondered if Emil Ferris was just a pen name from Lynda Barry as in one sequence, a character looked just a a Barry creation. But no, it was a coincidence. "My Favorite Thing is Monsters" is new and exciting. I cannot believe I have to wait an entire year for book 2. I thought I was done waiting for books in a series after Harry Potter yet here I am.

As a monster-loving kid who grew up during the ‘60s and ‘70s, I identified with the scorned, mysterious phantoms of my favorite horror films. My fascination with these immortal creatures never died, lying buried from time to time and then resurging when the darkness within summoned that icily familiar grip. Reading Emil Ferris’ My Favorite Thing is Monsters, I feel again that freezing familiarity, the clench of a kindred spirit. The narrator in Ferris’ stunningly illustrated graphic novel, like myself as an adolescent, seeks escape from her feelings of loneliness and alienation by immersing herself in fantasies of thrillingly compelling supernatural beasts. Ferris, writing from the perspective of the narrator, Karen, creates an equally enticing world of fantasy by blending stories and imagery from Karen’s experience as an urban Chicago preteen in the 1960s with depictions of the horror magazines and paintings Karen adores. The book , formatted to resemble a lined notebook sketch pad, brilliantly perpetuates the illusion that the reader is stepping into the imaginary realm of a creative and extremely perceptive young girl. Detailed interpretations of monster magazine covers and famous art works such as Fuseli’s “ The Nightmare” are juxtaposed with gruesome depictions of Karen’s neighbors and playfully doodled sketches of Karen as a trench-coated child werewolf. As Karen explores her interest in art, Ferris’ illustrations reveal a variety of styles—from the neon-lit grotesqueries of Ernst Kirchner and the German Expressionists to the luridly seductive pulp art of popular comics and the grittily unflattering portraits of Robert Crumb. Unlike many graphic novels, Ferris’ work focuses on inner conflicts, the dangerous secrets festering inside neighbors, schoolmates, and family members that threaten to emerge in monstrous form when exposed. Secrets connect the lives of Karen and the people she knows. Based to some extent on Ferris’ experience growing up in Chicago’s Uptown, MFTIM features 10-year-old, monster-obsessed Karen Reyes as, in her trenchcoat, she investigates a woman friend's death in her apartment building. It's declared a suicide, but signs point to murder. There are many intertwined stories, as she begins to better understand her older brother Deeze, who's irresistible to the ladies, and other friends, neighbors, and relatives.Many are already calling this a masterpiece, and they're right, IMO. I loved the quirky but skillful drawings.The story is surprisingly deep and wide-ranging. A local newspaper article explained that she sketches people on Chicago's El trains for inspiration, and that's easy to imagine in this book.One of my favorite parts is the time she spends in the Art Institute with her brother Deeze, talking about various paintings, and even entering some.If you enjoy graphic novels, you'll want to read this one. If you like reading something different, and seeing a new talent emerge onto the scene, that's reason to give this one a try, too. (

I agree with many of the other reviewers of this book—ironically, the many-star reviews and a bit of the few-star reviews. As a lifelong journalist, I understand why the book's "headline," it's title, is misleading and I'm adding my own 5-star review here to help clarify. Clearly, the cover image, title and subtitle were chosen to sell more copies of this book at the 500th anniversary of the date Luther supposedly nailed up his complaints about the Catholic church. When I first saw the cover, I expected a book all about that day—and that era.Instead, this is indeed a very important small volume written by Marty—and also by the best-selling Catholic author James Martin, who wrote the Foreword to this book—examining the issues that sprang from that date and cascade down to us, half a millennium later. To be fair to the low-star reviews here, they're right: If you're buying this book expecting a gripping historical narrative about 1517, then you'll be mistaken.What has happened in the decades leading up to this anniversary is many, many dialogues and studies involving Lutheran and Catholic leaders. No, not all Lutheran groups participated. But there was historic involvement by a number of Lutheran leaders, especially in Europe and that led to the amazing start to this "anniversary year" in late October 2015 including Pope Francis in Sweden in joint worship with Lutherans. This is the first centennial of the key date in Luther's career that is being jointly commemorated by Catholic and Lutheran leaders together in Europe.This volume, both Marty's short text and James Martin's Foreword, seek to clarify issues surrounding this history and to point toward areas of emerging convergence. Obviously, many Christians still object and disagree on these issues. But, if you do buy and read this volume, you'll understand a whole lot more about how the events Luther set off in 1517 have an important legacy in our contemporary world.

Though not at all a book about the life and times of Luther or living in Wittenberg, Saxony when Luther nailed his 95 Theses to the Castle Church door, I did like the book. In terms of how that day "changed the world" (part of the book title), I think the author did a pretty good job of addressing that point and how - 500 years later - some of these same things have been agreed upon and yet are still in some ways still in dispute.My only criticism of the book would lie more in his sweeping generalizations about Lutherans. I can tell the author is ELCA Lutheran because his many frames of reference to Lutherans often only address the ELCA point of view (e.g., ordaining women; only the ELCA does that. The LCMS and WELS do not.)Even though I am not in fellowship with the author's ELCA Lutheran belief system, I still think this little book is a good addition to my theology/Lutheran/Reformation bookshelf.

This is classic Martin Marty on Martin Luther. Classic Martin Marty in that few church historians writing today write with such relevance--tying past truths to present life lessons. And it's classic Martin Luther in that we read a snapshot focus on one day, rather than a video focused on an entire lifetime. While researching and writing "Counseling Under the Cross: How Martin Luther Applied the Gospel to Daily Life," I returned to "October 13, 1517" many times--to experience the soul of the Reformation and the heart of the Reformer--Martin Luther.

Having met Dr. Marty on several occasions, I can attest there is no one more versed in this subject than this author. And this book helps explain who Luther was, an important personage from the Reformation who often is not known as well as he should be beyond his name. This books shows why he was so important, and how he positively affects society today from far beyond the grave! Here is why he is influential! A good read, plentiful insight, and not just for us Lutherans only!

Does Martin Marty want to talk about "justification by grace through faith" or repentance or Lutheran-Catholic dialogue or the 95 Theses or the historical meaning of October 31, 1517? It is unclear to me. It seems a bit like a "stream of consciousness" sermon. There are good sections and sections that seem off-topic, at best.

This book was well-written and an interesting read. I can't say if it is theologically sound, but it provides some insight into the recent changes in the relationships between Catholicism and Protestantism.

This is a quick read because it is written by an outstanding writer who knows his subject and has done his homework and knows his audience well. It is not a popular read but can reach a wide audience as well as a scholar such as myself This is Martin Marty at his mature, insightful, honest best. Thank you Marty!

This was more of an 'apology' written by a Lutheran minister to discuss the lingering issues that separates the Lutherans from the the Roman Catholic church. I'm afraid that I did not learn any more than I already knew, certainly no more regarding Luther himself and his motives.

I KNOW this book was great. Could not put it down for second. I love how the story starts and every scene between the two individuals. Every page keeps you wanting for more. It definitely sparks imagination and has you fall ini love with the characters so much you imagine yourself in their place. So mouthwatering!

I read this with a smile on my face. The interaction between h/H is fun, lively and even endearing. The H is a jerk, but don't let that throw you off. I personally go for surly and rough heroes, and in Jason's case, he's more crude than total jerk. He's definitely rough and calls it how he sees it, doesn't mind peppering his language with curse words, and he doesn't suffer fools. But he also has a good, tender side and develops a real sweet spot for his next-door neighbor. Bad boy, meet good girl.It all started five years ago when Jason moved in and Haley saw him taking a pee on the oak tree in his front yard. Yep, rough and crude, and this behavior scared Haley off, and she avoided him whenever possible. Haley's soft, sweet, sexy and maybe a little nerdy in her glasses, and she's also in need of a backbone adjustment. That's where Jason comes in. One day Haley has had it with being timid and taking crap from most everyone in her life, and Jason just pushes the wrong button that day. This leads to Haley confronting Jason about his behavior, and the rest is history.From that moment on, Jason's hooked and decides to be her protector. He likes her sweetness, her looks and smarts, and he sees in her a chance to help make her stronger and more likely to stand up for herself. It's really cute and funny how he calls her 'little grasshopper.' He thinks he's Mr. Miyagi, the sensei who will teach his protege the art of toughness. Jason didn't know it yet, but he'd met his match. He doesn't realize that, in protecting Haley from loser guys, he's also saving her to have all to himself.Brash, protective and possessive, and for all his faults, Jason's charming in his own way, and funny as well. There's so much chemistry between Haley and Jason. I even had to laugh out loud a few times at them. It's one of those stories where you feel as if you spent time with two good friends who have the hots for each other but don't know it yet, and you can't wait to see it when it finally happens. A cute, fun, sexy read, just really a good time.

In reality, the book is probably really only a 2.5-3 stars book, but there's just something about the whole series that I've reread them several times already. Yes, there's some gimmicks--the food bit, the nicknames, the cliched trope, and OMG the run on sentences--but for some reason I really like them. I wish more than anything that she would get a decent editor. The writing needs a good copy editor who won't let her overuse phrases, repeat information, or rely too heavily on the gimmicks. And please for the love of god, learn the correct use of lay/laid/lie. However, there's just something about the books that crack me up. No, they're not great literature. And if you go in expecting this to be written like a trade published book, you're going to be disappointed. They (the series) are a good, funny story that made me laugh though, and I'll keep rereading them. And isn't that what a star review really boils down to anyway? How the reader feels about the book. So, just know, this book/series isn't for a lot of people. If you can't overlook the things I mentioned above, then you really aren't going to enjoy this one or any of the next in the series. But if you can put those things aside and focus on the fun and the storytelling then you just might get a kick out of it.

All I want is to read a cute light romance, but I haven't had much success this week. The premise of this book was cute, but I couldn't get past the writing. The phrase "little grasshopper" was used as a term of endearment 78 times in this 322 page book, and after the 5th time I was ready to poke my eyes out, so 78 out times was really really excessive. There were also some grammatical errors, like saying "I could care less" instead of "could not care less".It is also a huge pet peeve of mine when conflicts exist in books solely because the characters won't talk to each other. Seriously, the entire conflict could have been solved in a 5 minute conversation or if everyone was honest from the get go. All in all, the premise of the story was cute but the execution was lacking. This was not a winner for me.
