For any student of the New Testament, this is a truly academic, magnificently explained, work which is laid out in clear and simple language. This is a textbook, non-judgemental, just the facts and theories, explaining the New Testament. Bart Ehrman is the quintessential professor/academic, and this textbook, which has been revised repeatedly so as to stay up to date and current on research, walks you through how the New Testament was written, the books which it is composed of, the historic data supporting it, and information about the writers (in terms of what is historically known about them). I have many of his, and other author's works on more specific titles regarding the New Testament, such as Lost Christianties, How Jesus Became God, Jesus Before the Gospels, etc. But this particular book, The New Testament, is a succinct, beautifully written overview of the New Testament and is an important work if you want to understand it from a masterful academic and professor. There is no writer out there who does a better job breaking it all down into clear and simple language for lay people and students than Bart Ehrman.

Dr. Ehrman is a great academic in his field and causes you to challenge the common perceptions and disinformation that we've learned in Sunday school. As a Christian, I have a thirst for knowledge in my faith and the historical timeframe of the period. Whether it's the authorship of the New Testament, the language(s) of the time, culture, or how information was passed down over time, this book makes understanding the time period and the burgeoning religion, as it took hold. His book, "Forged", I would also recommend, as it challenges our understanding of who wrote the books from our modern Canon and why we should be skeptical of their attribution and why certain, disputed epistles should be reconsidered - an academic discussion that common church goers are unaware of. He also has an additional book countering the Mythicist argument that neo-Atheists have grasped onto, especially with non-academic discourse online. I always recommend Ehrman to my friends, Christian or non-Christian to further our understanding and the debate on theological grounds. I'm hoping we can update our Canon and theology after 2,000 through academic discourse. (Doubtful, as most denominations would think this is heretical, even if it is academically dishonest to continue perpetrating incorrect information)

this is an earlier, and much cheaper, version of the new testament text book used by most universities as a freshman introductory course. it contains nearly everything that the latest version has, but at about half the price. if you want the truth of what the new testament contains, without a spin, and without a collection plate, this is the place to go.

Excellent book. Bart Ehrman has no theological bias and just gives the facts. I love that about him.

When one is born into a life of Christianity without having the opportunity to research beforehand, there is a void that may or may not be perceived. Since being challenged to look at what I was brought up to believe and having the opportunity to participate in the Great Courses: The New Testament - I have found this item extremely informative and helpful in looking at what was as normal as taking a breath in a new and fresh way. The options offered from the research that Bart D. Erhman has done and complied in this textbook has been challenging in looking at things from a different perspective. To view just the DVD's in the Great Course material was not enough and the textbook is essential. Well written and formatted, it flows well but is not so overwhelming that one would get discouraged. The selected other readings are noted for beginning students and advanced students and will be helpful in further study this this area.

Very, very much enjoyed this book. This work by Ehrman is his classroom textbook. It is well written, full of illustrations. A complete and thorough history of the ancient Christian church (if there ever really was an organized church in the 1st century) as well as ancillary information. Highly recommended. A terrific overview, yet rich with unexpected detail.

Expensive but excellent guide to the New Testament for the lay person. History, not religious dogma.

anyone who professes to be a Christian needs the info in this book. it is balanced, and at a depth that a freshman at a decent university can understand it. the author has no axe to grind here, it is a "just the facts, mam," investigation of each book of the new testament. it is an excellent resource for church groups, Christian youth groups, or anyone else wanting to get to the truth of the new testament, without the special sauce served by those wanting to alter the writings to suit their own tastes.
