This book has reviewed some approaches that I already knew (never bad) and addressed some approaches that are new to me. I found particularly useful information on the chapter on bullies. Evne what you have learned before is presented with new and realistic examples.
I read Gunsalus when I was a faculty union head on my campus and reread it when I became a department chair.If you become an administrator, read it cover to cover. Do not pass Go. Do not collect $200. At least not until you read The College Administrator's Survival Guide.
Taylor-made to understanding the managing of Ph.D's. I saw Gunsalus give a workshop live and all the highly useful and relevant information she provided in her workshop is contained in this very readable book. She demonstrates the skill of a clinical psychologist, the knowledge base of HR sprinkled with the insight of an attorney. A must read.
I wonderful book of advice for new department chairs! I wish that I had read it when I first became an academic administrator some 50 years ago!
I've worked with the author and have only positive impressions.
I found this to be highly relevant, readable and practical. Its full of very insightful tips and ideas that... work! It also has some cautions that are wel worth listening to (and many following!). An essential read for the new Department Chair, and I think also has a lot for the very experienced hand too!
Best book on the topic I have seen. I followed his advice for 9 years, and it brought me success and kudos. I recommend it to everyone who comes to me for advice.
This book is really a management 101 primer. Covering legal, ethical and technical challenges of managing in an academic setting, the book is an easy - if very basic - read.
