Being Lao, the story and recipes in this book are reminiscent of my childhood and upbringing. Like any recipie, it’s always crafted to you the cooks taste. For me it’s refreshing to see a Lao cook book because much of Lao cooking really doesn’t involve measuring ingredients but knowing how to balance flavors on taste. This cook book is handy if I don’t want to call up my mom for directions for a certain dish. Overall the recipes are good guides to developing authentic Lao dishes and I would recommend to someone unfamiliar with the cuisine.

I like reading the stories, interesting reading. The recipes are just what I was looking for. Home style food from Southeast Asia. I am a big fan of the noodles and soups, especially when I can cook once and have food for a couple of days. I crave those flavors and textures.

I love this book. Having a number of connections with this part of the world helps I am sure. I have been to Laos twice,an Thailand twice. I know several refugee families for that area. Our kid spent a semester abroad there.The extensive biographical part of this book says alot about what first generation Americans must go through -with feet in two very different worlds.Some of the recipes are a challenge - not uncommon with foreign foods...but substitute of do without as the author and his Mom does.For example a pepper wood substitute is available.Google " Chilli wood, pepper wood Piper ribesioides Wall., Piper interruptum Opiz. ໄມ້ ສະຄານ mai sakahn, sakhan, sakharn, sakhahn, mai sakhaan" and you will find it.

Love the book. It’s very authentic. Everything in there is something my family would cook and I like that it’s not the stuff you see in typical restaurants. Can’t wait to actually trying cooking some of his recipes and redline it to what my taste buds like.

As a Lao person growing up in a very traditional Lao household, I can say this book is very legit! So many beautiful photos of traditional lao cuisines that most people dont talk about. Whats the difference between Lao food and Thai food? Thai food is very pretty. Pretty presentations, pretty names, and pretty ingridients. Lao food is the nitty gritty! The names and presentations arent as pretty, but the food is soo good!! The colors, the smells! We arent afraid to use the less than savory stuff!! This book captures the beautiful, complex flavors of Laos! If you’re adventurous, try some Lao cooking! Your tastebuds will thank you... and this is a great book to start your adventure!

The book is divided into two parts, first a bio of the author then recipes. Throughout the book food and its relationship to the Lao culture is discussed. The recipes are accompanied by descriptions of the ingredients and which brands we find in our stores work best. I really loved this book! The cover is impervious to food spills.

Absolutely love this book. Always wanted to cook Lao food but asking a Lao mom how much measurement for everything is nearly impossible. We’ve tried so many dishes from this book and everything has been really good! Tastes just like moms cooking. Easy to follow instructions and beautiful photography. If you grew up in the US and are used to very potent Asian flavors this is the book for you.I skipped the stories because I just want to make food. First dish doesn’t actually start until 113 pages in.

Love the DK Eyewitness travel guides and have bought many of them. In this case we bought both the DK Eyewitness Boston and Top 10 Boston books in anticipation of guests coming to visit us now that we've relocated to the Boston area. We were hoping to find information about historic homes, public gardens, and other lesser known sites in the greater Boston area. Both of these titles are great for Boston proper; but the reason I gave them only 4 stars is that they only cover the city of Boston and in the outlying areas section Cambridge, Concord and Lexington. Unfortunately nothing on Salem, the North Shore, Plymouth and other surrounding areas of interest. If you are visiting Boston and intend to stay pretty much in town then these are good guides for you. If you are on a more extended stay and want to find out about the surrounding areas you will need to supplement with another guide.

Overall, I thought the book was pretty good. It seemed to be missing a few key items though - like a map of the Freedom Trail and there was no mention of Cheers. It's a huge attraction. I am also surprised it didn't recommend the GoBoston card, which gives you discounts to the major attractions. I stumbled across it while Googling Boston.

Great arrangement by city areas. Illustrations are very good and show many attraction highlights. DK Eyewitness is one of my preferred travel guides, and this one did not disappoint.

The PLUS: 5 Stars!The guide takes a pyramidal approach to the sights of your destination. So you slowly can work yourself through the areas that really interest you by easily skipping things you would not want to see or visit at all.It also makes it easy to find the things that are important to you because the descriptions are small enough and pictures further make it easy to attract your interest or pass things by.The MINUS: 4 Stars!The good about the Maps is that they are there at all and also that there is an index of some streets.The contained foldout maps though helpful when there is nothing else at all are not my favorite because they are quite small and are more an overview to identify the area where something is to be found on a better more detailed map. The same maps as the foldouts are also on a separate map that is detachable. This is a good idea but they are way to small and hard to read especially in dim light and in an awkward format to be really useful. - When available, I rather get a local map from the tourist office and transfer my destinations to it.SUMMARY: 5 Stars!This guide is an extremely useful sightseeing guide and small enough to be carried with you all the time for quick reference. It also allows you to choose the amount of detail you want to follow for the town: top 10 Highlights - top 10 to each highlight - top ten to some general categories like museums, bars, hotels, restaurants, shopping, and also some specific categories just for this destination like best seafood restaurants or great walks and itineraries.Insider tips or as they call the sections: "Street smart" round up this little guide. The maps are OK but could be improved. The deficiency of the maps though should not detract from the overall usefulness of this guide for your destination. This is true for a first time visitor with limited or all kinds of time and also for the return visitor, who wants to to repeat some destinations in more detail or avoid the same old top ten but venture out into new territory.

Don't buy this book if you don't already know openGl inside and out. The book mostly focuses on some wrapper classes and a small framework developed by the author. However, I purchased tjhe book to learn openGL-- not some guys personal code. To top it all off, the source code available for the book comes with near incoherent installation instructions. Check google- seems no one is able to get this running. Save your ducats. Use Anton's Guide. Hopefully, a real guide will be available soon.

I purchased this book a long time ago. OpenGL has gone through many revisions since then. It seems like in todays industry there is a hope to make OpenGL the industry standard and cross platform.

This is the definitive OpenGL book. It's not the most recent version of OpenGL but it covers the version most users have in the machine now. Explains the concepts well.

This is the textbook for my computer graphics class, and it is much more useful than the one I had the last time I took a graphics class. I know some reviewers complained about it being filled with deprecated material, but that is a good thing when your class starts out with that material (like mine does) before moving on to the current stuff. So if you just want a quick reference to the most current version of OpenGL, there might be a better book, but if you want a more complete reference that explains how it all fits together, this book is pretty solid.

I have a digital version of this edition on my Kindle DX; I returned the corresponding box set unopened, and bought instead the sixth edition covering OpenGL 2.1. (I prefer hard copy for ease of browsing, except when my hard copy isn't with me.)OpenGL is going through an uncomfortable transition, and the other reviews slam this book for an issue with OpenGL, not this book. My newest hardware, bought within the week, "only" supports OpenGL 2.1, which is fine by me. Sure, these OpenGL manuals are expensive, and many of us have obsolete editions on our bookshelves, but that's no reason to buy an edition that is "too new" for one's hardware. Value your time, and buy exactly the edition that matches your current hardware.

You do not want to be starting off new code doing it the old ways. In this case:If you need to know the basics of the 3D graphics, don't try to learn it from this book, get a solid, general purpose 3D graphics book for that (or at least something like "Advanced Graphics Programming using OpenGL" which also uses largely deprecated functions but it's written in a better style for this purpose).For a basic introduction on how to use OpenGL (to get yourself up to speed on the basic outline of the API), get something like "Beginning OpenGL Game Programming 2nd ed" just get you started. It'll quickly show you the basic ropes of OpenGL and what you need to do to get the system initialized, viewports set, shaders initialized, rendering attached to Windows windows and some basic info on vertex buffers and such. Just looking at the basic, free SDK/docs it would tricky to figure out where to begin, this will show you. After that, for more advanced commands dealing with buffers you can just look at the free OpenGL documents/search the web to learn what more you need, it should all make sense once you know the basic outline of OpenGL.To learn more about the new shader model and changes to GLSL get a book like "OpenGL Shading Language - 3rd ed", way more useful than the few pages in this book on that topic.So:If you already know OpenGL 2.0 just get "OpenGL Shading Language - 3rd ed" and download the latest free OpenGL 3.3 (or whatever version) docs and you are good to go, don't even bother with this book.If you know nothing about OpenGL but do know about 3D graphics then just get "Beginning OpenGL Game Programming 2nd ed" to get you introduced to the API and then get"OpenGL Shading Language - 3rd ed" and download the latest free OpenGL 3.3 (or whatever version) docs and you are good to go, don't even bother with this book.If you know nothing about 3D graphics or OpenGL then get the above two books and add some general references on 3D graphics and don't even bother with this book.EDIT: Also the new 5th edition of OpenGL SuperBible is WAY more worthwhile that this title.Only if you are both new and will also need to deal with an advanced, but old, code base, bother with this book.

If you're new to OpenGL (and computer graphics in general) this book will confuse you to the point of tears. Apparently OpenGL changed quite a bit from the 2.x versions to the 3.x versions. This book explains the 2.x paradigms, then mentions that most of the stuff you just read doesn't apply in version 3.x.It's hard to figure out what's what. For example, Chapter 8 (Drawing Pixels, Bitmaps, Fonts, and Images) sounds very important but the first page of that chapter notes, "Much of the functionality discussed in this chapter was deprecated in OpenGL Version 3.0, and was removed from Version 3.1. It was replaced with more capable functionality using framebuffer objects, which are described in Chapter 10."Great, so we can tear out the 68 pages of Chapter 8 to use as kindling (no pun intended) and move on to Chapter 10. But (and it's a big "but") Chapter 10 notes, "In OpenGL Version 3.1, some of the techniques and functions described in this chapter were removed through deprecation. The concepts are still relevant, but are available using more modern features." By now anyone new to OpenGL and who wants to learn about its latest version would be disgusted with this confusion.OpenGL is now in version 4.x, and a new version of this book is slated for release before the end of 2011. Hopefully the authors will have found a way to present the most current material clearly, with references, perhaps, to earlier versions for those who need that information.

This book is the sequel to The Flame Trees of Thika. It recounts the life that Elspeth and her family had from their return to Kenya after the First World War to the departure of Elspeth to England to start college. This book recounts Elspeth's growth from girl to young woman. It describes not only life with her family, but also interactions with many more young settlers(read men), natives, and the changeing relationships between them. And, of course, some of the stars are the wildlife of Africa. An excellant book, a really good read, and highly recommended.

I bought this and "Out in the Midday Sun: My Kenya" because I enjoyed the TV special based on her book: "The Flame Trees of Thika." For me, this book was just too much of the same story over and over, and I got bored. I never got around to reading "Out in the Midday Sun."

One of the loveliest books written about the first setlers in East-Africa, with love for the wildlife and nature and inhabitants. Splendid author!

Continues story of THE FLAME TREES OF THIKA. Elspeth Huxley is an excellent writer. Print is small and difficult to read.

Elspeth Huxley's memoir is fantastic

Having lived in Africa for over 23 years, and also being an avid reader, I fell in love with Elspeth Huxley's books which I read while staying at our rented house while on our last home leave. She obviously loved Africa and her style of prose is so descriptive of this fascinating continent. I want my children, who were all born in Africa, to read these books, not only to remember the land of their birth, but also for the rich writing style that I find lacking in many modern books.

So interesting, delightful read. Received in timely fashion, just as promised.

Great read. Better than the first book.
