I actually heard a story from this book on one of the pod-casts I listen to. As soon as it was over I hit Amazon and bought it. Several very interesting stories involving time travel and time slips. All are fairly short, read the entire book in one sitting. I have always been interested in time slips but it can be hard to find good stories that are not heavily slanted in one direction or another by the author. This book is the exception, the author does a good job presenting you with stories and letting you make up your own mind. Book is well written and easy to read. Not to heavy on technical or physics jargon. For the most part the stories are presented just as the person experienced the phenomena. I recommend this book (and it's sequel) to anyone who has an interest in the subject of time travel.

This was a fascinating book to read; I learned quite a bit about time travel cases of which I had been unaware. Having said that, it was a tad frustrating to find the meat on the bone of the subject matter in the book. There are tantalizing clues and nebulous accounts of various time travel incidents throughout the book; however, the author doesn't provide any follow up or offer any attempts by him to contact some of the people involved in these incidents. Granted, some have passed away, some faded into obscurity, and what not, but due to the what I can only imagine is a world-wide fascination for most people with the very idea of time travel, I feel the author should've made the effort if he was able. If you're looking for that type of experience with this book, save your money. If on the other hand you are like me and would like to have a primer on the various reported/alleged time travel incidents then go ahead and get this book. You will enjoy it if you enjoy speculating about the "what if" but not if you want the "show me the proof".

Save your money and just look for the same stories on the Internet. Each story is just the bare bones information with no real research, in depth hypotheses, nor any background information. Presented as short vignettes in the Ripley's style. Short book, but don't waste the 3 bucks. The author probably spent all of a day getting these stories from web searches.

These stories are all related to true events. The idea of parrellel universes is explained as a possible reason thesehappenings. The way that a tiny slip towards a parrellel universe can create a window to see into or go into it can happen. Slips like this show the relative lack of force that time has. Time is only relative here and is nonbindingelsewhere. This book shows how the quantum science explanations of earth and the universe make sense of how life is.

This is the first and only book that I have ever read about time travel so it is difficult to compare against anything else. Unless I check out his references, I have no feeling for the validity of what is in the book. It is interesting in any case. He did make one statement about physicists agreeing on time travel. In my 15 years at Los Alamos, I met a lot of physicists and none of them ever mentioned time travel.

Richard Bullivant wrote an astounding book with True Time Travel Stories. if your interested in stories of other people having "time slips" or their experiences with reported time shifts/definitional shifts then this book is a must read. My personal interest is a little more personal and even though it's a great book,it didn't have the complete information I was looking for but it had some.

Of time travel. The stories are fascinating and curious. There were no typos to distract the reader from the subject. A good read and a stretch of the imagination.

This book certainly encourages thought and discourages skepticism. The evidence seems to point more towards belief and away from doubt. Whatever your opinion it will give you much more to think about, so do read it please.

We first met Drake & Stella during the TOUCHED saga. Drake was an integral character in that series. Stella was the love he had lost long ago. In DARK TOURNAMENT, in Drake's new environment, he comes upon Stella once again, but the reunion doesn't go in the way he expected. Instead, his journey becomes a "rock 'em, sock 'em" of unanticipated encounters with a wide variety of individuals. As I discovered in her previous books, Elisa Amore is an artist in crafting real characters & a gripping plot. Her storyline is filled with action & unexpected twists. It's like the wildest carnival ride, & I didn't want the ride to end! Highly recommended.

Elisa S Amore writes one of the best books yet again. After reading the love story of Evan and Gemma, it was nice to hear the story of Stella and Drake. Sometimes, I can't even put it into words about how incredible her writing is. She captures the characters perfectly and you are drawn into their story and world, and you feel as if you are there yourself. The entire book was breathtakingly beautiful and amazing. I read it in only three days and I feel myself longing for more. After I finished this book, I needed to read more about the world of Drake and Stella. When I finished it, I just longed for more and for the story to never end. Once I put the book down, I was still part of the world of Drake and Stella for the next few days. I cannot wait till the next book comes out because Elisa S Amore writes another perfect book.IF you are interested in the love story of Drake and Stella, I suggest to read the Touched Saga first because everything will make more sense if you do. If you are looking for a page-turning book filled with love, laughter, adventure, flawless writing, and a book world that consumes you; read this book and become part of the love story of Drake and Stella. You will not regret reading this book and the Touched Saga.

Great book, her words put me right in the story. I love Drake and Stella's story so much that I want their prequel...this hint is for you Elisa!I can't wait for the trilogy to continue with Rouge Arena, because I know it's going to be amazing!

So happy to read Stella and Drake's story come to live. Elisa's story never fail to show that love conquerors all. We it be a battle of wits or hand to hand combat. If you want to bad enough and your love is stong enough you can even take on Hell itself. And this story has all of that and more. Excited to see what comes next.

I read the Touched series twice, loved them! This was the perfect way to continue the series! Each book gets better and better! Can't wait for Rogue Arena!!!

A brutal fight in the pits of hell devolves into a sexual encounter after the fight while the immortal looser is brought back to health. Where this evolves Drake to find his love Stella, I don't know. 11%. I'm done. Most everyone else thought it was great. I couldn't continue reading.

This story is a great combination of action, intensity, and humor!I really love this Drake character!Another homerun for ELISA!

Love these books! Got them as soon as they came out!

Never been this disappointed before. Normally I love the Falcon guides, so I just ordered it without looking inside - biggest mistake ever. I love hiking, but this book was a waste of money, longest "hike" is 2.2 miles - you really call that a hike? Luckily I stayed with a family at the Big Island, and they knew where to do some real hikes. Though hiking is not really what people do the most, on the Big Island, neither the locals or the tourist, there are still a ton of beautiful hikes to do. Both full day, and overnight. It's truly a shame those hikes are not included.

It was a gift. They used it to found waterfalls.

ok

Looks like a good guide to some easy day hikes.

Used this quite a bit while there

I read the lone review before buying, since I was interested in simple mindless short walks. However I found this book a little short on information about the Big Island, and about specific hikes. No reference is made to the "local area" of hikes. Author will helpfully include the "mile marker" turnoff #, but not the name of the area (Honomu? Hakalau? Papaikou?.......) so one can get a quick read on the location of the recommended hike. (For instance, author discusses hike near Hualalai but doesn't exactly say where it is on the map.) Such information would have been useful in the Table of Contents. Also, the author breaks up hikes within the confines of the Volcano National Park area, so as to seem like the Big Island has a lot of discrete trails; not. Also, I ask why two interesting hikes, Waipio Valley and Pololu Valley were not included. Waipio can be done with a 4-wheel drive vehicle, and then a walk around the valley. Pololu admittedly is a bit more difficult and may require vehicular assistance part of the way, but the walk part is pretty exhilarating.

I spent $10 sight unseen to buy this on Amazon, because most of Falcon's other guides are good, detailed and sensibly priced. I wrongfully assumed this would be similar. It is a tiny guide, easily fitting in a pocket. 96 pages, but only 60 dedicated to the "hikes." Only 18 "hikes" are described. Only 4 of these are located on the west side of the island where 90%+ of people vacation. And, it turns out these "hikes" are really not hikes at all, but walks or easy strolls. 11 are less than 1 mile roundtrip. 7 are from 1.1 to 2.2 miles. I mean, really, do you call a roundtrip of 1/2 mile (5 of them) or less a hike? Most people will be much happier with: Hawaii The Big Island Trailblazer: Where to hike, snorkel, surf, bike, drive. This has "156 hikes and strolls" along with snorkeling, biking, camping, etc. info. It's $15 instead of $10, but it is 10X more useful.

Received this book pretty quickly. Has some good hikes in it but doesn't have any many hikes as expected. The hikes that it does have has good info about though.

The Poet X

From School Library Journal

Gr 7 Up—Magnificently crafted, Acevedo's bildungsroman in verse is a stunning account of a teen girl's path to poetry. Sophomore Xiomara Batista is simultaneously invisible and hyper visible at home, school, and in her largely Dominican community in Harlem—her body is "unhide-able" she tells readers early on, yet she bristles at how others project their desires, insecurities, failures, patriarchal attitudes toward her. Though she is quick to battle and defend herself and her twin brother Xavier, Xiomara's inner life sensitively grapples with these projections and the expectations of her strict, religious mother. Acevedo's depiction of a faith in crisis is exceedingly relatable and teens, especially those going through the sacrament of Confirmation, will deeply appreciate Xiomara's thoughtful questioning of the Church and how it treats women. Forbidden kisses with a crush and an impromptu performance at an open mic prove to be euphoric, affirming moments for Xiomara: "it's beautiful and real and what I wanted." Acevedo's poetry is skillfully and gorgeously crafted, each verse can be savored on its own, but together they create a portrait of a young poet sure to resonate with readers long after the book's end. VERDICT Truly a "lantern glowing in the dark" for aspiring poets everywhere. All YA collections will want to share and treasure this profoundly moving work.—Della Farrell, School Library Journal

Review

“The force and intensity behind her words practically pushes them off the page, resulting in a verse novel that is felt as much as it is heard. This is a book from the heart, and for the heart.” (New York Times Book Review)“A story that will slam the power of poetry and love back into your heart.” (Laurie Halse Anderson, author of Speak and Chains)“Crackles with energy and snaps with authenticity and voice. Every poem in this stunningly addictive and deliciously rhythmic verse novel begs to be read aloud.  Xiomara is a protagonist who readers will cheer for at every turn. As X might say, Acevedo’s got bars. Don’t pass this one by.” (Justina Ireland, author of Dread Nation)“In The Poet X, Acevedo skillfully sculpts powerful, self-contained poems into a masterpiece of a story, and has amplified the voices of girls en el barrio who are equal parts goddess, saint, warrior, and hero.” (Ibi Zoboi, author of American Street)“Though vivid with detail about family, love, and culture, The Poet X is more of an exploration of when the poet becomes the poem... Acevedo delivers an incredibly potent debut.” (Jason Reynolds, author of National Book Award Finalist Ghost)“A glorious achievement. This is a story about what it means to be a writer and how to survive when it feels like the whole world’s turned against you.” (Daniel José Older, author of the Shadowshaper Cypher series)“A powerful, heartwarming tale of a girl not afraid to reach out and figure out her place in the world.” (Booklist)★ “Themes as diverse as growing up first-generation American, Latinx culture, sizeism, music, burgeoning sexuality, and the power of the written and spoken word are all explored with nuance. Poignant and real, beautiful and intense.” (Kirkus Reviews (starred review))★ “Debut novelist Acevedo’s free verse gives Xiomara’s coming-of-age story an undeniable pull, its emotionally charged bluntness reflecting her determination and strength. At its heart, this is a complex and sometimes painful exploration of love in its many forms, with Xiomara’s growing love for herself reigning supreme.” (Publishers Weekly (starred review))★ “In nearly every poem, there is at least one universal truth about adolescence, family, gender, race, religion, or sexuality that will have readers either nodding in grateful acknowledgment or blinking away tears.” (Horn Book (starred review))

So, first my critical thoughts and then my personal thoughts:The formatting of this book is gorgeous. The way the poems are structured on the page tell the story and convey the mood of a scene just as effectively as the words. The story is conveyed in a deftly succinct, but rich and moving way. The minimal approach to storytelling really makes the character come alive in your mind. I felt at home in Xio’s head, comfortable and able to understand her heart through the language And pacing Acevedo utilizes like a great chef utilizes familiar but perfectly balanced flavor profiles. If you enjoy great writing and a unique approach to storytelling, you will love this book.As for my personal experience with The Poet X?Poetry has always felt like nourishment to my soul, but I’ve never felt it pierce so deeply and so directly into my heart as this book and its narrative poetry managed to do. As a Latin blooded teenager, I felt all wrong in my own body compared to my white friends, and I related to Xio’s discomfort in a lot of ways. While she became tough, I became invisible. My story isn’t like hers, except that I too found comfort in words and writing. I found enough connection to move me to tears by the end of this beautiful, heartfelt story about finding your words. I love this book. It has become an instant favorite. Beautiful and moving and earnest doesn’t even begin to cover it. Anyone who has latinx roots, has ever been a teenage girl, has ever struggled to find our voice, or who has a compassionate, empathetic heart should read this book.

A friend of mine had been telling me about this book for months and it just released so I had to get a copy for my daughter. I'm into the YA genre so I just had to read it for myself first. What I loved most is the poetry form style in which Ms. Acevedo tells the story of teen Xiomara Batista who is trying to navigate a complex life with New York City as the backdrop. It's a very quick yet powerful read but I got so much out of her story in those 357 pages (not every page is filled to the bottom so it goes quickly). Of course as a mother, I was concerned about certain themes being too mature for my daughter but we talked through it as she read it. It was so beautifully done and cannot wait to read whatever else Ms. Acevedo has in store.

This is my favorite book of 2018, so far.The power behind the lines in this book is undeniable. I felt like tiny hammers were pinging the words into my heart. I read some pages two, three, four...seven times because they were so eloquent, heavy and impactful. Here’s a favorite stanza from page 340:“That love can be a band:tears if you pull it too hard, but also flexible enoughto stretch around the most chaotic mass.”Mami and Xiomara’s relationship is so raw and intense, I felt like I was flinching during so many of their scenes together. So many of the characters complement Xiomara so well...Ms. Galiano, Twin, Caridad, Aman, Father Sean...This book captures the horrible, painful and metamorphic experience of growing up and magnifies it all with a layer of cultural norms and immigrant narratives. Holy cow. This is the full package.

17202933BookBlerd's review May 09, 2018 · editit was amazingbookshelves: favoritesI've read about a dozen novels in verse since I was a teen. If I could, I'd go back in time and give my teen self this book. This book is about a Latinx teen girl named Xiomara as she learns to use poetry to cope with questioning her mother's religion & strictness as well as her coming of age. Ms. Acevedo's verses are so amazing that I found myself bookmarking pages or verses that stood out to me. As a poet, I could tell that the author honed her craft well. Not only were the poems powerful, but the story they told was relatable. Xiomara's experience with religious questioning, a strict mother, sexual harassment from her peers, and poetry were things that made me cheer & ache for her. It's been a few years since I last read a verse novel, but this is definitely a new favorite. I loved this as both a reader & a poet and I will be using this book to fuel my own poetry in the future.

The Poet X is Elizabeth Acevedo’s extraordinary debut novel that speaks from the depths of the beauty and power of the written and spoken word. It is a novel in verse, told in three parts about Xiomara Batista, a 15-year old girl hailing from Harlem.Xiomara (meaning “One who is ready for war”) is the daughter of two old school Dominican parents. She is often misunderstood and unheard in a home where her mom’s voice rings loudest, casting judgement and laying down the law in the name of religion. With a father who is at once present and absent; there but…”gone as anybody.”She keeps these notebooks, at least one of which was gifted to her by her brother who’s long believed in Xiomara and has been a source of quiet strength and encouragement. She fills her notebooks with inspirational quotes and her thoughts of which, every now and then she dresses “in the clothing of a poem.”A flyer hanging in the hallway at school catches Xiomara’s attention, calling out to all poets, rappers, and writers for a Spoken Word Poetry Club. Will she have what it takes? Can she speak up and be seen? Will she find her voice? The cover is alluring and powerful and colorfully portrays the defining words that are etched into Xiomara’s very being. Those words hidden inside that affirm her and those that are freeing, as well as those that are vying to confine. She is Xiomara, listen to her voice. If you were looking for that book that you wish you’d read as a teenager, this is it. Now as a 40-year-old woman I am thankful for an honest, relevant read. This is one I can give to my daughters. It leaves me brimming with hope for the ways it will speak to its reader. Hats off to Elizabeth Acevedo for this exceptional debut.

Bodyminds Reimagined: (Dis)ability, Race, and Gender in Black Women's Speculative Fiction, by Sami Schalk

Review

"It is now time to bring focus and attention to the works of Black women speculative writers and their subjects. Bodyminds Reimagined becomes the discovery that celebrates these writers and subjects, while challenging the status quo within speculative fiction and (dis)ability studies, and moves them from marginalized objects to realist representations." (Grace Gipson Black Perspectives 2018-08-03)"Sami Schalk’s book is an important bridge between Black women’s science fiction and disability theorizing. Her work requires a reconceptualization of the boundaries of disability studies and African American literature as well." (Moya Bailey Feminist Formations 2018-10-01)"Bodyminds Reimagined boldly demonstrates the capacity of black speculation and experimentation to generate world-building visions that are inclusive and sustainable for multiply marginalized black subjects." (Petal Samuel Public Books 2018-10-19)"Bodyminds Reimagined is a compelling critical study . . . simultaneously accessible and complex, exhaustively sourced and fresh in its analysis. . . . Students, scholars, and fans of speculative fiction will be well served to familiarize themselves with this book." (Angela Rovak Women's Studies 2018-10-08)"Sami Schalk, through Bodyminds Reimagined, takes a revolutionary step in defining the black disabled person’s experience in literature and media by promoting examples of black disabled people in speculative fiction created by women of color; and by re-defining manifestations of intersectionality among disabled people of color."  (Timotheus "T.J." Gordon, Jr. Ethnic Studies Review 2018-03-01)

Review

“In this smart and necessary book, Sami Schalk persuasively argues that black women's speculative fiction offers a rich archive of alternate framings of (dis)ability, race, sexuality, and gender that move us closer toward justice. Bodyminds Reimagined reveals how nonrealist representations can defamiliarize categories assumed to be self-evident, opening up new ways of thinking about methodology, trauma, metaphor, and politics. Schalk's work pushes all of us in feminist studies, black studies, and disability studies to reimagine how we understand minds and bodies moving though the world.” (Alison Kafer, author of Feminist, Queer, Crip)

This book addresses more than just what the title suggests it should. This is a great read for educators, social workers, and creatives alike to be conscious of fiction, representation, and inaccessibility in media. The beginning of the book in particular is a good snapshot of what it means to be walking through a world where media never feels like it's for you, and the change that happens when you finally find some that is.

This book has been very helpful for me in thinking about the relationship between bodyminds and disability. The author uses incredibly generative speculative fiction from black women writers to push the boundaries of theory. Excellent text, and actually enjoyed the writing, which is rare in an academic text like this!

Dr. Schalk’s Bodyminds Reimagined is an academic text accessible to readers both inside and outside of academia, a call to action, and a celebration of an often dismissed genre. She is transparent in her writing style and accomplishes her goal of making her writing intelligible to anyone seeking to learn. Whether you’re a diehard fan of the novels she is engaging with or have never heard of them before, like me, her descriptions allow you to follow her critiques at the same level. Her passion is evident on this topic and encourages anyone, regardless of how they may identify, to reimagine these identities and think more complexly about the intersectionality and constructive nature of the world we have created through the worlds created by authors.

A lot happens in such a short time during Scarlet. The story picks up immediately after the ending of Cinder, but we're not in New Bejing anymore. Scarlet starts out in France, where we meet its title character. At first I was worried that the entire book would be about Scarlet, since I was missing my favorite cyborg mechanic. However, that is not the case at all. The story actually alternates between Scarlet, Cinder, and Kai! I loved seeing old favorites as well as new characters, even though it felt like quite a bit was happening to contain into one book. The plot is extremely fast paced as it only covers a few days, but those couple of days certainly keep each of the characters busy. First we have Scarlet searching for her missing grandmother with the help of Wolf, a street fighter. If you've read The Queen's Army (a free short story), you'll recognize him as I did. I was always wondering if he could actually be trusted or not. I did like how Scarlet didn't just immediately trust him, even after she accepted his help. She's not one to just follow blindly. Second, we have Cinder busting out of prison! She also picks up an accomplice in the overly charming Thorne, another prisoner. I loved Cinder's new found confidence as she escapes! Finally, we have Emperor Kai. He's dealing with the aftermath of discovering Cinder's Lunar heritage and the attacks from the Lunar Queen. I felt so sad reading his chapters, since he doubts Cinder and thinks she just another manipulator. For the first three quarters, Scarlet read like two separate stories. I was a little iffy about this in the beginning, but by time the two storylines collide, I felt like this was the only way to tell it. As I said before, we follow Scarlet as she searches for her grandmother and Cinder as she escapes from prison. But guess who she's looking for? Scarlet's grandmother! Of course they team up in the end. Both storylines taught us so much more about how Cinder got to where she is and about the Lunars in general. There's some super strange medical/scientific stuff going on there, and I'd love to learn more of the specifics! Perhaps in the next book?I really don't want to give too much away, but there's a lot of stuff revealed in Scarlet. The war between the Lunars and Earthens is just getting started, but Cinder is going to have to make some decisions and soon! Kai has already made one, but I really hope he doesn't go through with it! I'm not sure if I enjoyed this one more than it's predecessor, but I do know that I thoroughly enjoyed it! There's never a dull moment!

5 STARSSCARLET was a thrilling second installment that kept me engrossed and reading faster then I could turn the pages. Marissa Meyer's does it again in this twisted retelling of Little Red Riding Hood like you've never seen it before!Marissa Meyer's takes this fairytale and turns it even better then the original, with a Sci-f twist and it's own touch of originality, SCARLET brings something so unique and truly an addicting adventure that will keep your mind racing, heart aching, and leave you utterly and wonderfully satisfied, while keeping you eager for the next book in this one of a kind series!I honestly didn't think I could love this second book anymore then I loved CINDER, but boy was I wrong. While CINDER was amazing and had the start to a swoony romance, SCARLET picked up where CINDER left off and progressed this series with a new cast of characters along with the old ones we loved from book one. It blew me away with it's mind blowing action and adventure, and thrilling twist that just kept coming. And we finally start to get some long deserved answers that we desperately craved!Returning again for another epic adventure is our beloved Cinder that's just as daring and memorable as she was the first time around. She's now a fugitive on the run with the weight of earth and Luna bearing down upon her. Cinder has grown somewhat from book one, but she's still unsure about herself and her capabilities of going up against Levana and wining, but she's not letting that stop her.But sadly in this second book her and Emperor Kai have no interaction whatsoever. And I was really bummed out about that aspect, even though Cinder and Kai never really acted on their feelings in the first book, but you could still definitely feel the chemistry and desire radiating off of them for each other. And I was finally hoping to have some hot romance heat up between them, but nope, their was none, zip, zilch, nada, and that was a HUGE let down!! But nevertheless, I still loved this book and enjoyed Cinder and Kai's own separate adventure that I'm betting will merge by the end and have a fiery romance that was well worth waiting for!!But my disappointment over their absence of a hot romance didn't last long because we have a new and fresh hot couple that seemed to heat up the pages even more then Cinder and Kai, but that's probably only because they actually "DID" act on their desires. Scarlet and Wolf are from two very different worlds, but when their lives collide they're reluctantly thrown together and sparks fly, well maybe not at first. But after they realize they're on the "same side", their attraction intensifies and they became totally swoony and was epically engaging.I loved Scarlet from the second she was introduced, she was feisty and determined to find her missing grandmother no matter what. Everyone thinks she's crazy but Scarlet's not giving up that easy, and that's the main reason why I loved her immediately. She had everyone telling her that her grandmother took off, but Scarlet was not willing to accept that and was determined to go to any length to find and save her grandmother, even if she had to sacrifice herself. When Scarlet Benoit loves, she loves all the way, and that was an admirable trait that I liked. She was also hard head and determined, and extremely hardworking, she just had this air about her that I instantly liked and admired. The world-building was once again mind-blowing. I'm amazed at how much thought and detail went into this world, and how Meyer's could over think the main plot in SCARLET to expand to the other books in this series, and then interweave to later all make sense. What I mean is that as of writing this review now I've already read every book in this series except WINTER, and each book is about a new character but still has all the old characters from the all the other books in the series, and is also told in multiple POV's from all the characters in the previous books. But each book also ties into the rest of the series, and not only are questions answered from the previous book, but it also all starts to fit together and you finally get to see the bigger picture. And for Meyer's to create a series like this with such depth and reach, it's just beyond amazing and intriguing. But it also had to take a lot of thought and planing to make sure everything lined up and fit just right to make sense throughout the entire series. But the actual plot was fascinating, I could relive a million stories set in this world and never grow tired of them. Meyer's just has this gift for creating the most unique and utterly complex stories that I have read to date. If it's one thing I can undoubtedly give to Meyer's it's her originality to create the most developed world-buildings and compelling plots out there!!!THE PLOT:CINDER:A week ago Cinder was a just a normal girl, well as normal as any Cyborg girl can be. Part human and part machine, Cinder has lived with her fair share of hateful comments and downcast looks. But she's never had a complete country look at her like that, like a complete outcast and a double freak, until now that is, until the truth behind part of her identity is finally revealed, and her whole world comes crashing down around her.Cinder's world becomes a turmoil of chaos and destruction after she finds out she's not only Lunar, a race that has been at odds with Earthens for a long as she can remember, but also that she's the lost Lunar Princess Selene that most of the world thinks dead. After coming face to face with the same woman who tried to burn her alive and forced her to become a cyborg, Cinder is condemned only for the blood that runs through her veins and sentenced to death upon returning home to her birth plant of Luna. But with the help of unlikely allies Cinder escapes her prison and goes on the run to uncover the secrets behind her heritage, and the events that followed after her aunt, Queen Levana ruined her life and stole away her childhood.A fugitive on the run, Cinder is now the most wanted person in the world, she must stay one step ahead of the Commonwealth and the goons Levana has secretly stashed on earth if she is going to get the answers she seeks. With enemies closing in and time running out, Cinder must quickly find Michelle Benoit, the person with all the answers she needs if she's to untangle the threads of her past and save their future. But when Cinder discovers that Michelle Benoit is missing, and even worse suspected to be in the clutches of Levana's engineered Lunar wolfs, she will have to become one with the power she just barley learned how to control if she is to stay alive long enough to get answers and hopefully save the world from falling into Levana's hands, because if that happens, they would all be doomed, and at the mercy of pure evil...SCARLET:Scarlet Benoit's grandmother is missing, everyone says the crazy ol' bat ran off on her own, but Scarlet knows the truth, she knows her grandmother would never leave without telling her where's she's going. But it doesn't matter because she's still gone, just disappeared into thin air, but Scarlet is not giving up until she finds her grandmother and makes the evil bastards that took her pay, even if she has to put herself in the crossfire to find her, she will. Two weeks after her grandmothers disappearance Scarlet finally gets the break she needs when a street fighter baring the same eerie tattoo of her grandmothers kidnappers appears offering the answers she desperately needs. But the truth behind it all is more terrifying then she ever anticipated, and she's quickly pulled into a world of chaos and murder as she tries to unravel the mystery behind her grandmothers secrets. All while trying to fight her ongoing attraction with the street fighter that seems more beast than man, and is more tied to her grandmothers secrets and disappearance then she once thought. The fight to save her grandmother may bring her closer to the truth, but it also may be her ultimate downfall...Surprisingly SCARLET was sooo much better then I imaged it would be, and was even better then the first book CINDER was, even though we still didn't get any Cinder/Kai action yet, which I desperately NEED. But we get a set of new characters that were fully developed and undeniably likable, with a new and fresh romance that easily made up for the Cinder/Kai lack.Overall, SCARLET was such an awesome ride that I couldn't get enough of. Full of action and adventure, twist and turns, betrayals and deception, self discovery and shocking revelations, romance and bitter-sweet attraction, and heart-breaking loss with torturous murder, SCARLET touches on everything and brings a hurricane of emotions that just keep coming and coming. I can happily say I'm more then satisfied with this second installment, and couldn't wait any longer to start reading the third book CRESS, and unsurprisingly I'm enjoying that one just as much if not more then SCARLET and CINDER, and I have a feeling the final book WINTER will be the best of them all. So if you've already read CINDER and enjoyed it, then I think you would most definitely find this next installment right up your alley. This series has quickly become one of my new favorites of all time!!

I admire Meyer’s clever way of combining Little Red Riding Hood with Cinderella and still maintaining the sci-fi-esque, dystopian theme that underlies The Lunar Chronicles.Scarlet was good… I enjoyed this installment more than Cinder. Mostly, I was drawn to Wolf. Who wouldn’t enjoy a handsome, brooding and dark, tortured male who is part canine? That sounds weird, but he reminded me a lot of Heathcliff in Wuthering Heights. And, well, I guess I like that sort of complex character?Scarlet lives in France with her Grand-mere. One day, Grand-mere goes missing and Scarlet will do anything to find her, as her grandmother has been the only legitimate parental figure she has ever known. She hooks up with a shady character named Wolf, and he knows where Scarlet can find her Grand-mere; he voluntarily takes her to Paris, and then they REALLY hook up. Tis the beginning of a beautiful… tortured love affair. In the meantime, we left Cinder in a jail in New Beijing, tasked with escaping and meeting Dr. Erland in Africa. Cinder meets Captain Carswell Thorne, a pilot locked up for a petty crime, and together, they engineer a way to get out of the jail and escape the Eastern Commonwealth. Cinder still harbors feelings for Emperor Kaito, but develops a fondness for Thorne as well. Thorne reminded me of a Han Solo type character, and I really enjoyed reading his witty quips and obsession over beautiful women. Not much more can be said about Scarlet without giving away the story. If you liked Cinder, reading Scarlet is a no-brainer.
