I understand what the author is trying to do... there is good teasing and bad teasing... but the examples are far from crystal clear and when I read this with therapy clients they are confused and to be honest I am too. like one of the "good teasing" examples is "you're such a klutz..." and I'm like, erm... that seems to have a lot of potentially negative implications. not a great illustration of the concept of 'laughing with you' versus 'laughing at you'. I'm going to keep this in my biblio rotation only reluctantly until I find something else on the same subject. at least it elicits good discussions...

Not my favorite of the Julia Cook books. I don't feel like the difference between teasing and bullying is very clear at all. The ideas are muddy and the illustrations are just not what I've come to expect from her books either.

My kiddo is autistic and these books are written and illustrated so well. They follow similar to our social stories we use. And the author address so many issues kiddos these days face, including mine. Highly recommend her books, we have many of them!

I am reading this book with students in a Language Learning Disabled 3-4th grade class. It generates specific discussions about teasing and bullying and helps students differentiate the terms. It also helps them to self-reflect about their own peer relationships. My classes enjoy many of Julia Cook's books and they reach students in 1st through 5th grades easily with modifications as needed to explain vocabulary and concepts.EFG, Speech Pathologist

Ok, I love this book. I read it to my son's 1st grade class & they all enjoyed it too. The teacher loved it too...maybe it was just my amazing storytelling skills, but I'm sure the book had something to do with it! Great colorful and fun pictures, great message and a fun read! So well written!

cute book and arrived on time

I had high hopes for this book since as counselor I teach elementary school age children how best to treat each other. The first few pages of the book are great- that teasing is not acting in a kind way. BUT then the book attempts to separate teasing into two categories, mean teasing and "just joking" type of teasing. I think it is extremely confusing to try and make the definition of teasing mean two entirely different things. I think the author should have separated the two behaviors using different terminology, maybe teasing (laughing at somebody- insults, mean words) and joking (laughing with others about a truly funny, harmless situation). The author's examples of the "acceptable" type of teasing are still unkind and insulting. As I was reading the book aloud, I skipped entire pages just to avoid confusing the students. I do not want to reinforcement any type of behavior that could hurt a person. The book sends a message that we shouldn't feel sad when something mean is said if it's just a little mean (the author's opinion of appropriate teasing). This book could have been a great teaching tool BUT it took a very wrong turn. Teasing is wrong- end of story!

Children often confuse the two. Julia explains through example how to determine the difference. Playful teasing does not hurt another one's feelings while bullying does. The book provides an opportuntity for conversation about your own child's behaviors towards others as well as how others have treated him/her.

I follow Atlas Obscura on Facebook, and they're one of my favorites. I had heard mention of a book and decided to check it out when I was holiday shopping this year. Man, am I glad I did! Look. First off, this thing is the size of an encyclopedia. This isn't some little piddly magazine-sized thing that you can read in one sitting. Oh HECK no. I'm looking forward to digesting this one in small spurts over a long period of time. It's heavy and packed full of never-before-seen info. I guarantee it!There's a terrific table of contents in front to guide you where you might want to go, but I kind of prefer the "surprise me" method of just opening it up. The book is visually stunning - the pages and photos are crisp and clear. The writing is awesome. It's so easy to lose yourself in here: If there's a "look inside" option, I recommend you do so now. I'll wait!The binding is heavy-duty. This book is built to last. If you're thinking about ordering it, order it. And if you're thinking about ordering it for a gift, go ahead and order two because once you peek, you're going to want one of your own. If I know you like I know I know you, then we both know I'm right.If this review even helped you a fraction of an iota, please give it a thumbs-up. I bought this for a 30-year old nephew whose county count was, I believe, pushing 40 about a year ago, and I think it may satisfy even him. (Heâ€™s the hardest to buy for member of the entire family!)I read a short description of the book in the travel section of the SF Chronicle a few weeks ago, and made the purchase based on that. Well, that combined with my sister verifying that her son might actually appreciate this book!There are many hundreds of places and things described over about 450 pages, with most including a photo, and the balance a drawing. I think the only things without a graphic are the short, â€œAlso in or nearâ€¦â€ entries. Those graphics add interest and tend to draw you in, encouraging you to read the piece about whatever is depicted graphically.The book must weigh something like 2 pounds â€“ just guessing â€“ meaning you might not be likely to pack it in your suitcase. However, itâ€™s easy enough to take digital photos of any entries you may want to have easy access to on a trip. Itâ€™s printed on heavy paper, and I like that the pages are a pleasing, very light buff color, much nicer than stark white. Point being, itâ€™s aesthetically a very nicely put together book.Because I bought this as a gift, I've looked through it closely but have not read it cover to cover. The entries seem to be written for a variety of readers and travelers, but certainly far from the lowest common denominator. Itâ€™s not a typical travel book! I donâ€™t find every entry to be about a fascinating item, but a great many are, and possibly none whatsoever are dull. Even things that might not seem of particular interest based on the heading end up proving to be interesting when you get into the text. That said, there are items about things I have no interest in seeing, e.g., â€œLake Monsters of the USA,â€ but there donâ€™t seem to be many of that sort of thing included. As with "Lake Monsters," even if you (or a recipient) aren't likely to visit many of the places described, I think for many curious people this would make for an interesting read even without the travel element.It's not a perfect book, and I don't think any one book can be perfect for all readers, but I do think it's very good and I can easily recommend it for anyone who might be potentially interested. Given the quality of the contents and of the physical item itself, I am very pleased with the price. Easy 5 stars and recommendation!

This book exceeded my already higher-than-average expectations. It's gorgeously designed and PACKED with interestingness on every page. The page layouts are complex and varied too, so it's fun to flip through and land on random sections about odd, wondrous places and artifacts halfway around the world (or in your own hometown!). So the act of making your way through the book feels like the kind of discovery and adventure covered in the content itself. Brilliant.I pre-ordered this because I was already a huge fan of the website and decided to support the project. I figured at the very least I'd have a gift ready for the holidays. But I am absolutely keeping this for myself, and will probably buy another copy for one of my family members soon. The book inspires you to venture out and explore, and reminds you that even in this era of Google Earth and Twitter there is plenty of mystery left out there that's waiting to be stumbled upon.

This is unlike any travel guide I've ever seen, full of surprising locations both near and far. The entire experience of reading Atlas Obscura is like having dinner with your smartest, friendliest acquaintance, who also happens to be a bit of a weirdo (in the best way). Nothing insightful here. Some good photos few GREAT photos. At least they introduced the genre.

This book is super cool. I love how these photographs were able to be taken by a drone. Good aerial photography is something that is not easy to come by, but this book blew that out of the water. It gives us a whole new ability as humans to be able to take really cool pictures of things that before would only be possible if we left land ourselves. Awesome job! Yuval Noah Harari's "Homo Deus" continues the tradition introduced in his previous book "Sapiens": clever, clear and humorous writing, intelligent analogies and a remarkable sweep through human history, culture, intellect and technology. In general it is as readable as "Sapiens" but suffers from a few limitations.On the positive side, Mr. Harari brings the same colorful and thought-provoking writing and broad grasp of humanity, both ancient and contemporary, to the table. He starts with exploring the three main causes of human misery through the ages - disease, starvation and war - and talks extensively about how improved technological development, liberal political and cultural institutions and economic freedom have led to very significant declines in each of these maladies. Continuing his theme from "Sapiens", a major part of the discussion is devoted to shared zeitgeists like religion and other forms of belief that, notwithstanding some of their pernicious effects, can unify a remarkably large number of people across the world in striving together for humanity's betterment. As in "Sapiens", Mr. Harari enlivens his discussion with popular analogies from current culture ranging from McDonald's and modern marriage to American politics and pop music. Mr. Harari's basic take is that science and technology combined with a shared sense of morality have created a solid liberal framework around the world that puts individual rights front and center. There are undoubtedly communities that don't respect individual rights as much as others, but these are usually seen as challenging the centuries-long march toward liberal individualism rather than upholding the global trend.The discussion above covers about two thirds of the book. About half of this material is recycled from "Sapiens" with a few fresh perspectives and analogies. The most important general message that Mr. Harari delivers, especially in the last one third of the book, is that this long and inevitable-sounding imperative of liberal freedom is now ironically threatened by the very forces that enabled it, most notably the forces of technology and globalization. Foremost among these are artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning. These significant new developments are gradually making human beings cede their authority to machines, in ways small and big, explicitly and quietly. Ranging from dating to medical diagnosis, from the care of the elderly to household work, entire industries now stand to both benefit and be complemented or even superseded by the march of the machines. Mr. Harari speculates about a bold vision in which most manual labor has been taken over by machines and true human input is limited only to a very limited number of people, many of whom because of their creativity and demand will likely be in the top financial echelons of society. How will the rich and the poor live in these societies? We have already seen how the technological decimation of parts of the working class was a major theme in the 2016 election in the United States and the vote for Brexit in the United Kingdom. It was also a factor that was woefully ignored in the public discussion leading up to these events, probably because it is much easier to provoke human beings against other human beings rather than against cold, impersonal machines. And yet it is the cold, impersonal machines which will increasingly interfere with human lives. How will social harmony be preserved in the face of such interference? If people whose jobs are now being done by machines get bored, what new forms of entertainment and work will we have to invent to keep them occupied? Man after all is a thinking creature, and extended boredom can cause all sorts of psychological and social problems. If the division of labor between machines and men becomes extreme, will society fragment into H. G. Wells's vision of two species, one of which literally feeds on the other even as it sustains it?These are all tantalizing as well as concerning questions, but while Mr. Harari does hold forth on them with some intensity and imagination, this part of the book is where his limitations become clear. Since the argument about ceding human authority to machines is also a central one, the omission also unfortunately appears to me to be a serious one. The problem is that Mr. Harari is an anthropologist and social scientist, not an engineer, computer scientist or biologist, and many of the questions of AI are firmly grounded in engineering and software algorithms. There are mountains of literature written about machine learning and AI and especially their technical strengths and limitations, but Mr. Harari makes few efforts to follow them or to explicate their central arguments. Unfortunately there is a lot of hype these days about AI, and Mr. Harari dwells on some of the fanciful hype without grounding us in reality. In short, his take on AI is slim on details, and he makes sweeping and often one-sided arguments while largely skirting clear of the raw facts. The same goes for his treatment for biology. He mentions gene editing several times, and there is no doubt that this technology is going to make some significant inroads into our lives, but what is missing is a realistic discussion of what biotechnology can or cannot do. It is one thing to mention brain-machine interfaces that would allow our brains to access supercomputer-like speeds in an offhand manner; it's another to actually discuss to what extent this would be feasible and what the best science of our day has to say about it.In the field of AI, particularly missing is a discussion of neural networks and deep learning which are two of the main tools used in AI research. Also missing is a view of a plurality of AI scenarios in which machines either complement, subjugate or are largely tamed by humans. When it comes to AI and the future, while general trends are going to be important, much of the devil will be in the details - details which decide how the actual applications of AI will be sliced and diced. This is an arena in which even Mr. Harari's capacious intellect falls short. The ensuing discussion thus seems tantalizing but does not give us a clear idea of the actual potential of machine technology to impact human culture and civilization. For reading more about these aspects, I would recommend books like Nick Bostrom's "Superintelligence", Pedro Domingos's "The Master Algorithm" and John Markoff's "Machines of Loving Grace". All these books delve into the actual details that sum up the promise and fear of artificial intelligence.Notwithstanding these limitations, the book is certainly readable, especially if you haven't read "Sapiens" before. Mr. Harari's writing is often crisp, the play of his words is deftly clever and the reach of his mind and imagination immerses us in a grand landscape of ideas and history. At the very least he gives us a very good idea of how far we as human beings have come and how far we still have to go. As a proficient prognosticator Mr. Harari's crystal ball remains murky, but as a surveyor of past human accomplishments his robust and unique abilities are still impressive and worth admiring.

This book is a mixed bag. It has three parts. The first is a review of some of the concepts explored in Harari's earlier book Sapiens. It elaborates on the fascinating concept of "intersubjective reality", whereby concepts that are shared in our collective imagination have great power to shape our objective reality; examples given include money, corporations, pop-culture brands, and religions. Part 1 is engaging and insightful, and deserves 4/5 stars.Part 2 is a critique of what Harari calls "humanism". He really dislikes humanism: he inaccurately states its tenets, and then repeatedly mocks it (for example, as promoting indulgent consumerism and sex). He claims that humanism is what is giving rise to an emerging cybernetic dystopia, described in Part 3.Harari is abusing the word "humanism," as a canvas on which to paint his caricature of modern liberal culture ("liberal" in the classical sense, not in the sense of left-wing politics). He is not really interested in what humanist writers and philosophers have actually said, and does not reference their works. Part 2 deserves only 2/5 stars.Part 3 is a dire prediction for humanity's future, as genetic engineering, AI, and human-machine interface technologies advance. Harari gives several scenarios, each of which are described very plausibly as future extrapolations of current trends. These scenarios are thought provoking and disturbing--we as a society should be taking them more seriously. There is an interesting discussion of an emerging religion/ideology of "dataism", wherein moral worth depends on the ability to enhance data flow, rather than on consciousness. Part 3 deserves 4/5 stars.For most of the book, Harari appears to be adopting a materialistic perspective, and one which is also extremely unsentimental and discounts the significance of human morale and character. He pretends to assume that human beings are nothing more than algorithms.However, some of his arguments (against the existence of an indivisible self, against free-will) are similar to those in Buddhism. He also discusses how animals and people have consciousness and subjective experiences, and presumes that artificial intelligence will remain unconscious (the "weak AI" hypothesis of John Searle).And on the very last page, he makes us wonder if his hardcore materialistic perspective has just been a long, extended ruse: he asks us to question a worldview that would deny the significance of consciousness. So it seems likely that in a future book he will focus on the nature of consciousness, and argue for non-theistic Buddhism (an understated agenda in Harari's writing--perhaps he thinks that this is the way for humanity to avoid the grim fate predicted here?).The reader concerned about techno-dystopia may also be interested in "Weapons of Math Destruction," by Cathy O'Neil.[Update 6/13/2017: see the comment below, by kaiser100, for further insight into Harari's perspective on consciousness and meditation. This is not only one of the best of the Images of America series, it is itself a small gem. It compresses information about both the Pan-Am and turn-of-the-century US history into very few words coupled with superb pictures. With incredible economy, the authors lead us through a rapidly changing American landscape of social mores, values, and politics in which the Pan-Am is played out as a representative image of all that is good and bad in the country. I learned so much about women, minorities, the rise of a consumer society, colonialism, class and power, architecture, and engineering - and just plain fun as it was known in a world before TV. What a great introduction to the modern era in US history! Wow!

A great book for anyone who is interested in Buffalo, New York history. My only wish is that the author had some pictures of what was done to the land after the Pan American Exposition was torn down.

Having lived in Buffalo years ago, I always wanted to know more about this fabled exposition of yore. This collection of rare photos of the building of the various exhibits & the opened fair itself is a treat! Only flaw is that many of the captions are for architecture aficionados only.

Better than I expected. I was looking for history on the art and color and this book was exactly what I was looking for. A well written book on the times.

Good review of the exposition where a President was shot, and later died from physicians ineptitude.Tends to give cursory coverage of negative events.Riots on the last night aren't mentioned.

This isn't your typical climbing/adventure book that goes through all the trials and tribulations of a particular climb or expedition. It's much more introspective and gives you a glimpse into the author's (Mark Twight a world-famous Alpinist who is now in his 50's and is into a lot of different things) mind.It's a compendium of his articles and essays published in the past. The author presents each piece pretty much as it appeared when first published, then has a couple of updates at later dates--penned several years later and then several years after that. It's an interesting presentation--you get a feel for the changes in the author's perspective over time.Some of the early stuff is pretty overwrought, as Mark admits in his updates. It's also not nearly as well-written as later material. It's interesting to see the great improvement as he learns the writer's craft. Aside from the very early stuff, the writing is top notch, at least in my opinion.There are enough great climbing stories to satisfy, but for me the best stuff are Mark's insights into some of the psychological (or dare I say spiritual?) aspects of climbing both as an individual and with friends with whom one shares unique and un-duplicatable challenges of the highest order. He also has a lot of good takes on the climbing "scene" as it has evolved over the years and, sadly, seems to be going the way of all things in this consumer-oriented, "star" based culture. C'est la vie.There is supposed to be a movie coming out that Twight has some role in about climbing in the French Alps. Can't wait to see it.I'll never be a climber, but there's a lot to admire and aspire to here.

i saw a slideshow by mark in rural idaho sometime in the late 90's, having no idea who he was. he had two slide projectors that were set to alternate slides on the same screen seemingly synchronized to some music while he spoke.my strongest recollection of the show was the end, where he had images of church windows and graves from climbers crossfade while he spoke of all those lost from his circle. that part went on for quite some time. i immediately went out and got his book 'extreme alpinism', which is sitting dogeared on a table here in the room some 15+ years later. my aspirations to achieve my own personal bests in all areas of my life were deeply influenced by this book as it was the first thing i ever read that just cut the fat away completely on what is possible. most interesting is his thoughts on suffering and action.this book, 'kiss or kill', contains his writings over the years, many of which are on his 'gym jones' website these days. if you have no interest in ruminations on a take no prisoners/excuses approach to climbing/life there is no point in reading this book and then giving it a poor review. i find it deeply candid considering mark is at heart, a punk, willing to put his money where his mouth is.the front page of 'extreme alpinism' has this quote:"for my mentors i owe you everything,strategy is beyond the techniques,technique is beyond the tools,one,two,ten thousand."after 15 years, i am still coming to understand this......

You come away with a few things from this collection of Mark Twight's writing, he is a no BS kind of guy, fearless on a couple levels, and of the old saying "it's better to be lucky than good" he is both. His climbing resume and writings on how he lived his life show that he is a put up or shut up kind of guy. He is fearless, but not reckless, in his climbng. He is also fearless for putting his essays out there. His early work is clearly ruff, full of youthful bravado and angst. As he progress, he becomes a damn fine writer. You have to respect that he would put it all out there for public consumption and expose himself to the guile of his "peers."Twight is also deep and reflective. You can see he mellows with age, but is intense at the same time. His losses in the mountains -friends, climbing partners, relationships- affected him and gave him perspective; his admission that he never expected to live past 26 shows how looking back, he is happy he has.The underlying theme as I understood it was a philosophy of respect for pushing yourself as hard as you can and then giving more - even if you are not a world class climber or athlete, you get respect if you give maximum effort to your endevor and you need to develope the mind to know when you did and not let external factors affect your self analysis - you do it for you and you are your own toughest competion.The people who critique this collection or Twight as ellitest or an egomaniac aren't digesting it. The essay on the weekend warrior mentality is very insightful and can be applied to anything you do in life.Twight is a facinating guy, with interesting insights. This is not light reading and slightly dark, so my suggestion is to read it slow; put it down, think about it and come back to it. The climbing essays are good, but be aware that much of the book expouses his philosophy.

Long, long ago, I saw Mark give a show in Boulder. It was laced with profanity and although it was entertaining at times, it was also so dependant upon proving that Mark was different, better, more intense and more... Twight, than any of us could ever be, and ultimately, that made the whole seem less than the sum of the parts. Over the years, I've read his articles and have seen more of his talks, all of which were a testament to the Mellowing of Mark. Yes, he has mellowed, but that is not to suggest that he is mellow.Kiss or Kill has a similar flavor to it, showing the change of Dr. Doom over time and place. I found it extremely funny, extremely sad, extremely entertaining and sometimes extremely overcooked. In short, extremely Twight. It belongs on any committed climber's bookshelf.

My kids (5 & 6) LOVE telling jokes. After about the 10,000th same knock knock joke - it was time to broaden their horizons. The text is big and pretty easy for my 6 year old to read unassisted. Its a win-win. They get to embrace their comedic career and I know they're improving their reading skills.

For this summer vacation. I have to buy books for him to read . I am pretty sure that I choose a funny book for him. But it's too easy to read for 9 yrs old kids.

It didn't get here in time for Christmas, due to a number of factors not all of which were attributable to the vendor. Still, it was a gift for a 7 year old and she really likes it.

I bought it for my 7 year old cousin and he loved it he has had â€œjoke showsâ€ for the family.
