Maud: A Novel Inspired by the Life of L.M. Montgomery

From School Library Journal

Gr 7 Up—This book, based on the early teen years of Lucy Maud Montgomery, opens in 1889, when the "Anne of Green Gables" author is 14. Motherless and with an absent father, Maud lives with her strict maternal grandparents in picturesque Cavendish, Prince Edward Island. Though life at home is full of obligations and duties, Maud finds distraction and excitement with her tight-knit circle of friends. She excels in school and aspires to be a published writer, though her options are severely limited because of her gender. As her grandparents remind her, Maud's goal should be to obtain a suitable husband. The story follows Maud as she reluctantly leaves the island for the newly developing territory of Saskatchewan to live with her father and his new family and then returns to her beloved Cavendish when things sour. The novel ends in 1892, but an addendum provides a summary of Maud's later years. Fishbane's admiration for Montgomery is apparent throughout, and her writing is reminiscent of the author's. The third-person narrative is filled with vivid descriptions of the natural beauty of the island and the untamed yet scenic Saskatchewan. Secondary characters are fully drawn and their interactions detailed and rich. Fishbane effectively evokes Maud's loneliness at having no true place to call home, despite her rather large extended family. Notwithstanding a cluttered start—too many characters are introduced at once, and a "cast of characters" at the outset is daunting—the tale quickly finds its footing as a compelling and informative tale of a beloved author. VERDICT An engaging addition that will appeal to more than just fans of L.M. Montgomery.—Melissa Kazan, Horace Mann School, NY

Maud, by Melanie Fishbane, provided by NetGalley as a digital ARC, was downloaded by me a couple of months ago. It sat on my IPad teasing me, taunting me, daring me to read it. I delayed the pleasure because I wished to savor it for as long as possible. I knew once I began reading this novel. I wouldn't be able to stop. I was correct. I read the entire book in one day. It is delicious and delightful, Melanie Fishbane captures Lucy Maud Montgomery"s voice so beautifully, it's quite haunting. It's like reading L.M. Montgomery's own journals, the words and depictions blend so well. I had to constantly remind myself this was historical fiction. It's been a long time since a book has so thoroughly entranced me like this one did. I hope the author will continue the story, with a follow up novel, soon. Melanie Fishbane is a talented Canadian writer who encapsulated a renowned, beloved icon of Canadian literature with her book.

I so wanted to like this book. I guess I went into this thinking I would be reading something like Anne of Green Gables or Emily of New Moon. Instead I found Maud blah and not very likable. I ended up not finishing the book.

Maud is an engaging fictionalized account of the early life of Lucy Maud Montgomery, the creator of the Anne of Green Gables books beloved the world over. While a work of historical fiction, the book encompasses many known facts and events of Montgomery's life. I was very surprised to see how very similar, in many ways, her growing up years were to those of her character Anne. It was also very sad to see how, unlike Anne, she never really seemed to have support or love from much of her family. I was very intrigued to say the least, and will be looking at a full length biography of her in the future.I was struck by how hard Montgomery worked to be able to write her stories. In a time when women were expected only to marry and have children, and anything else was considered strange or even evil, she chose education over even her current happiness or in some cases relationships with her family. She seems to have been a feminist before the term was coined. Though she did of course later marry and have children, it was only after she was an established and successful author. The author takes time to shed light on the condition of women's rights at this time in Canadian history, as well as the plight of some of the native people such as the Metis. There is also particular emphasis on the conflict between different denominations within the Christian church. The author has included a brief historical biography in the back of the book, along with specifics about what happened to certain characters. This really helped to tie up the story, especially since this particular book ended before Montgomery was even eighteen.4.5/5 stars. Highly recommend for anyone who has enjoyed the Anne of Green Gables story! Many thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for providing a free ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Fourteen-year-old Lucy Maud Montgomery — Maud to her friends — has a dream: to go to college and become a writer, just like her idol, Louisa May Alcott. But living with her grandparents on Prince Edward Island, she worries that this dream will never come true. Her grandfather has strong opinions about a woman's place in the world, and they do not include spending good money on college. Luckily, she has a teacher to believe in her, and good friends to support her, including Nate, the Baptist minister's stepson and the smartest boy in the class. If only he weren't a Baptist; her Presbyterian grandparents would never approve. Then again, Maud isn't sure she wants to settle down with a boy — her dreams of being a writer are much more important. But life changes for Maud when she goes out West to live with her father and his new wife and daughter. Her new home offers her another chance at love, as well as attending school, but tensions increase as Maud discovers her stepmother's plans for her, which threaten Maud's future — and her happiness forever. (via Goodreads)I received an eARC from Netgalley and the publisher, Penguin Teen, in exchange for an honest review!I have loved Anne of Green Gables for as long as I can remember, so when I saw this book coming out, I got really excited.Fans of the Anne of Green Gables series will see so many familiar things from Lucy Maud Montgomery's series', from Gog and Magog to Lover's Lane to being particular about how a name is spelled.I wasn't sure I was going to like this book. Much like The Radium Girls, Maud was written as narrative nonfiction, and it took me a little while to get into. It was very clearly based on Lucy Maud Montgomery's life, with all the hardships therein, but with a little extra lyricism on the author's part. Now that I've finished the book, I'm still not entirely sure I liked it. It was more than 400 pages, but Maud gets into college and that's the end of the story. It felt unfinished, despite the length of the story, and lacked the charming prose that Lucy Maud Montgomery used to worm her way into our hearts. There was a lot that was left unexplained. Even as someone who grew up in the church, I didn't understand why someone being Protestant wanting to be with someone who was Baptist was a big deal, even though it was talked about for probably a third of the book. It was never explored or explained, and given that this is narrative nonfiction, it needed to. We never found out why Mollie and Pensie hated each other, even though that was mentioned ten or twelve times.I also had no idea what the future held for Maud once it ended. This book was kind of a disappointment for me. This was a three star read at best.If this sounds like more your thing, you can pick up a copy on Amazon, Indiebound or your other favorite bookseller.three starsDisclaimer: All links to Indiebound and Amazon are affiliate links, which means that if you buy through those links, I will make a small amount of money off of it.

Extremely happy with purchase. It is like a real Encyclopedia. Ton of information. Huge heavy soft covered book. Surprised at not finding a new one but happy the used one turned out to be very clean.PROS: Great illustrations and pictures of plants, emphasis on being well cross-referenced, very detailed in most areas. Plenty of options for ailments using home remedies. Has great information/cautions on how one can 'overdose' on some things, as a nurse I have plenty of books and often these cautions are not too detailed...this one is and I applaud it most sincerely. Great self diagnosing could be done by going to the category sections for say skin or respiratory and getting a good idea of the possible problem. With the cost of healthcare & so many opting for paying a penalty to President BHO system, as people lost their job or health coverage, or both, or can no longer afford a healthcare plan--this would be a great place to start to cover those problems we all have to contend with, and need to be able to still pay for food and expenses.Have no CONS as this one a winner.Arrived intact and on time.Would HIGHLY RECOMMEND.

This book is by far the easiest and most organized book I've found for home remedies...which I'm somewhat new to. It has some interesting features I wasn't expecting: - Part 1 has 8 different traditional treatment methods, each with its own section. Indian, Chinese, Folk, Herbalism, Aromatherapy, Homeopathy, Flowers, Vitamins - Part 2 has common ailments and recommends choices from the above list - the Index is the most useful to me. I look up "headache" and get all the reference page numbersDescription of illnesses and treatments are in laymen's terms and not too detailed, yet certainly easy to follow.Oddly, this book does not mention Coconut Oil anywhere in the entire book which I use for many ailments. I also don't see any mention of cocoa.

I absolutely love this book. It has all kinds of information from Ayurveda to homeopathy and Chinese medicine. It very briefly discusses the types of remedies like salves and decoctions, though that is a 2 page spread and doesn't go into incredible detail. It gives you a basic idea though. It does talk about warmth/cold in symptoms, yin and yang, energy balance, meridians, you name it. That's about 1/3 of the book toward the front, and includes herbs and foods that are used in the different types of healing methods. Then it moves on to remedies and ailments. There is a lot of cross referencing but I find this really useful. The margins have a lot of little notes and boxes with additional information so that you can see which herbs go well with other herbs, or it links to other pages with more information on additional remedies, etc. I have referred to it frequently already. In the back it has an extensive index... for example, you can look up a symptom and it lists the different pages by homeopathy, aromatherapy, etc. so you have plenty to look through. It also lists a glossary and other resources like herbalism schools, what to keep in your herbalism cabinet, a quick remedy chart (like bites/stings, coughs, etc). The pages are beautiful, too. Nice and glossy and full-color with lots of photos throughout. It does NOT have much information on actual plant identification or harvesting. It explains where the parts come from and has photos, but it would be good to look up further reference if you're not sure. It DOES add caution regarding pregnancy or toxicity so that helps. But it would be good to have another book regarding harvesting, making salves, etc. if you want to research the herbalism side of things. This book however goes beyond that to also include foods like honey, onion, garlic, oats...so it is a great overall resource for alternative healing remedies.WELL WORTH THE COST.

The book was just as described and was well packaged and came in the time allotted for delivery. A beautifully illustrated and comprehensive book that will help me to learn and apply more natural remedies for myself, my friends and family. I would purchase from this Seller again.

This is the book I'd been waiting for and didn't even know it! I'd had a few other encyclopedias or reference books over the years, and I gave them all away after a few days of owning this because it was all I turned to. I'm in in for one reason or another every week. This book is a truly awesome collection of all natural health information.

This book is very detailed and to the point. It has talked about different methods of alternative medicines (traditional, Chinese, Ayurveda etc.). The book is categorized based on most common health symptoms and then discussed how they are treated based on different methods. I love how they used picture illustration (not hand drawn) for each of the ingredient. Overall, it's a good book to have for common everyday household medicine. If you wish to treat them naturally. Even my physician father is impressed by this.

I have several herbal and natural healing books, and this one is my go-to. I keep it on my kitchen counter with my favorite recipe books. It offers everything from herbal remedies to aromatherapy and homeopathy, organized by problem as well as by herb.

I love the illustrated Encyclopedia of Healing Remedies! This is already my second edition - I gave one to my family so I was odering me another one. It has so many valuable hints and knowledge about natural healing remedies and healthy eating habbits and it is a blessings! I am deeply appreciating the author for its creation! Thank you Norman Shealy

Saint Francis of Assisi, by Demi

Review

The beloved saint gets colorful treatment from Demi, who retells his biography at length, beginning at the beginning, when Francis was born in a stable in Assisi in 1182. Francis's early life gets extended treatment, with the depiction of medieval military scenes. Those unfamiliar with the details of Francis's life―he is credited with beginning the use of a Nativity scene to commemorate Christmas―will find it in edifying visual detail, including Francis's legendary encounter with the wolf of Gubbio. The narrative can be repetitive, but it provides a great excuse for the compelling visuals. Even the end papers are lavishly illustrated, with parade-like ranks of animals along with the words to Francis's prayers, including the Canticle of the Sun. As usual, Demi's mixed-media illustrations feature intricate decorative borders, along with lots and lots of animals. A visual feast and tribute to a Christian figure said to have lived like Jesus. Ages 6–up. (Oct.) (Publishers Weekly)Saint Francis of Assisi receives lovely drawings by Demi and packs in 56 pages of images and description to offer a retelling of the life story of Francis of Assisi. Christian readers will find this includes all stories and legends about Francis, from his youth to his conversion to poverty and his message, with Demi's lovely color drawings adding impact and flavor to the tales. Christian collections will find this a lovely introduction for ages 10 and up. (Midwest Book Review)Saint Francis of Assisi was a complex individual who faced many instances of adversity in his life in Italy. In this children's book, illustrator Demi delivers a retelling of his story, from his birth in 1182 to his participation in war with a neighboring town. The diagrams that accompany the text leave a biblical impression appropriate for this story, with gold frames, clothing, and architecture suggestive of the time period they recap. The story is appropriate for children aged six through ten. (Foreword Reviews)This lovely retelling of the life of Saint Francis is accompanied by rich, glowing illustrations reminiscent of illuminated manuscripts of medieval times. Demi, both author and illustrator, has created a book that will delight many of all ages. (Sacramento/San Francisco Book Review)

This lovely hardcover book is lavishly illustrated in the manner of illuminated manuscripts; the pictures online don't do it justice. And, of course, the Prayer of St. Francis is a concise reminder of Jesus' message.

This is a nice book for teaching younger children about the life of Saint Francis -- well written and great illustrations

I just read this book with my children for the first time tonight. As usual with Demi's work, the pictures are gorgeous. The prose are very nice, but some of the historical detail could have been left for an appendix. This would have made the story flow more effectively. Nonetheless, it is a great story and a wonderful teaching tool for children of all ages. My six year old loves it and "gets it." My four year old wanted to switch books about half way through. Then when she noticed some of the pictures on later pages, she wanted to keep going. The pictures really do carry the story forward and set fire to the imagination--just what a good picture book should do.I would take some issue with the last line which states that Saint Francis of Assisi is the most popular saint after Christ. This is problematic for two main reasons. First of all, I do not think it is correct to classify Jesus as "a saint". Secondly, I do not think that it is factually correct. Even if one were to say that Francis of Assisi is the most popular Christian saint, I do not know that this would be correct. I think Saint Valentine might fit in that category, though admittedly for more secular reasons. My quibbles about the last line aside, this is a very nice book, beautifully illustrated, typeset and printed and would be a welcome addition to any household seeking to raise children of substance, from whatever tradition they may hail.

Lots of books have been written about Saint Francis. This is a new title that tries to help connect with a younger crowd. Here is what the publisher had to say:ReviewThe beloved saint gets colorful treatment from Demi, who retells his biography at length, beginning at the beginning, when Francis was born in a stable in Assisi in 1182. But true to form of a high class publisher, I received an email asking for a second chance to impress properly. Before too long I received a printed copy of this book to review.St. Francis is a figure who has intrigued the masses for generations. This book is a beautiful rendering of his life story. The author/Illustrator does a great job at telling the story. The illustrations appear as if you are looking at a period/medieval time painting of the story which adds a level of authenticity. This book is a beautiful piece to give as gifts to young and old. With Christmas coming this would make a great item to add to your stockings for your family members who are interested in church history. Thanks to Wisdom Tales for providing a free copy so that I could give an honest evaluation.

Read on October 09, 2012Already this week we were reading The Song of Francis and I know from our future reading list that the author/illustrator Demi is one to look for, so I was eager when I saw a new Saint Francis of Assisi by Demi. This is my first experience with Demi and I can understand why so many people will recommend the artwork in these picture books. The colors are absolutely beautiful and the pages of this book are filled with details from the life as a boy through manhood and into death with the well known Saint Francis of Assisi.Reading through this book there were many details that I did not know about Saint Francis including that our modern day reenactments of the Nativity scene comes from his original idea to go back and focus on the humble beginnings of Christ. So many things can be learned from the pages of this book and it is a gorgeous way for our children to learn about such a historical figure in Christian history.I read this through an electronic galley, but I am positive in person it will only impress me more. Thanks to the Independent Book Publishers Association for loaning an electronic copy for review.

This is a beautiful book and I'm going to put in on my nine year old daughter's Kindle Fire and see what she thinks of it. However, from my perspective it spends a lot of time focusing on the miraculous in St. Francis' life and little focusing on his actual deeds and teaching. Still, most of what I just read on Wikipedia about St. Francis made it into the book. There are large drawings on each page, which are done in such a way as to appear to be framed artwork. While there is not a tremendous amount of writing on any page, the vocabulary is above that generally used in books for young children. At 60 pages I believe it is too long to be read aloud at a single sitting, however there are no chapter breaks or other logical stopping points. Therefore I would recommend it for kids in the 9-12 age group--old enough to read for themselves and to have the necessary vocabulary.I'd like to thank the publisher for making a review copy available via NetGalley. I love this book! It is very helpful! I love that it is hard cover and the rubber-ish feel to it. The dust cover it nice but I always take it off when using because it gets in the way, always sliding off, etc.. Very nice cloth that comes with this(we aren't opening ours though). Amazon sells this at an unbeatable price!

Since Diamond and Pearl, the "official" Pokemon guides (produced by the Pokemon Company and published/distributed by Prima) have been released in two volumes, with the Pokedex being included in the second volume, with the exception of Platinum's guide which was thicker and did have a Pokedex. So I bought the X/Y guide realizing and expecting this. What is annoying is that, while pages for each location have a listing of the Pokemon available, there's no index at the back that lists Pokemon by name and points out what routes they are found in for cross-referencing. There's also no listing of attacks and items at the back, just a TM list and info on what the Marts sell. I know that the Diamond/Pearl guide had these lists, because I just checked it as I'm writing this. The guide is hardcover and smaller in terms of page size, about the size of a novel. Which means that the maps and font are smaller and it's much harder to lay flat opened to a specific page. I don't see why they went this route with this guide, especially for reasons that I'll cover later. As a walkthrough, it is fairly detailed, pointing out items, listing (but not identifying on the map) hidden items, and showing the locations of each enemy trainer and the number of Pokemon they have (but not their complete rosters; then again, these guides have never included them). Full rosters are given for major opponents, and detailed strategies are given for Gym Leaders and the Elite Four. The walkthrough only covers up to the Elite Four - post-game matters will likely be in the next volume. It covers how to use the game's touch screen and communication features. So as a walkthrough, it's okay - not great, since I would have liked to see an alphabetical list of available Pokemon as well as details about the attacks and items - after all, this is a new generation of games, so there's going to be new examples of both. So, why did I say this guide was of poor quality? Its construction. Like many of the recent Pokemon guides, this one is printed on semi-glossy paper with poor-quality ink that tends to smear. I was hoping that since this is a supposed "collector's edition" that they would have used upgraded ink to print it. What is worse, however, is the horrible binding job that they did with my particular copy. The back cover and last page of the book has separated from the rest of it after less than a month of use, which is inexcusable. And no, I was not rough with handling the book. The binding came apart through normal use. Of course, the fact that it is a hardcover made using it normally (as a guide that you need to keep opened to a particular page) difficult.I'd really rather they stuck with the old-style (paperback, full-size) Pokemon guides (except with better quality ink, of course). Because not only is this hardcover edition smaller and harder to keep open to a specific page, apparently it was designed solely as a collector's item and wasn't durable enough to withstand, you know, actually using it as a guide.

Any time there is a new Pokémon game coming out, I always preorder the guide book with it. It's just what I've been doing since Gold, Silver, and Crystal. The best guide book I ever bought was the one for Platinum. It was huge, but something was missing from it. When Black and White came out with their Hardcover guide books, it was perfect. When I bought this book, I was expecting something similar and in-between Platinum up through Black and White 1&2. The only thing this book offers you is a simple walkthrough of the game. There is nothing in the back of the book about the Kalos Region pokédex. Nothing on how they evolve or when. On top of that, some of the info in the book is also wrong, such has some of the Horde info. Much better off using Serebii for that sort of info. The book itself, while conveniently hardcover, is also quite small. Certainly nothing compared to the former guidebooks. If you're looking for just a walkthrough, this book is fairly ok for it. But if you're in need of more than that, you'd be better off using the internet for it and saving your money.

Three stars because the information contained within the book is laid out well, and is as good as the guides before it.I've read a lot of the past reviews and have this to say.1) No regional 'Dex is unacceptable. I got it, most of us probably don't need a national pokedex in a volume 1, but c'mon, give us a regional Dex.2) The size is atrocious. This half size book means they likely did half ass research on wether or not this book would be appreciated at this size. Let me tell you now, it's not! The larger books can lay open in my lap while I am playing; this small one is an inconvenience at numerous levels, but mostly because it keep flopping shut on me.3) A couple of the features from previous books have been left out. The main one is the "day of the week guide" and the easy 2 page summary guide, usually found at the beginning of the old books. Those two features are exceptionally helpful and are, sadly, absent. All in all, the information provided is mostly complete, there wasn't a lot of info on the legendaries birds, which would have been helpful (like how to track them?!?!), but I still used the book extensively.
