If ever one of my book reviews deserved five stars this is it in spades. David Halberstam, a great author on numerous subjects, has provided us with a comprehensive history of the great names that have graced the radio sports scene in New York. The book is filled with anecdotes that reveal the personalities of such greats as Graham McNamee, Ted Husing, Red Barber, Mel Allen, Don Dunphy, Phil Rizzuto, Marv Albert, Marty Glickman, Clem McCarthy, Russ Hodges, Jim Woods, Lindsey Nelson, Bob Murphy, and numerous others. Anyone who ever reported sports on radio in New York is in here. Separate chapters are devoted to boxing, hockey, college and pro football, basketball, the Brooklyn Dodgers, the New York Giants, the New York Yankees, the New York Mets, talk radio, and his personal experience of a mistake he, himself, made while doing a game for the Miami Heat basketball team. The book concludes with a final section on references that cover most anything you may want to know on this subject. Halberstan says that baseball voices are not paid for how they describe a play, but how they handle airtime between plays. We are treated to a number of Vin Scully phrases such as when the Brewers and Cardinals, both sponsored by beer companies, played in the 1982 World Series. Scully said, "There will be no bad hops in this Series." An interesting tidbit is that Connie Desmond and Al Helfer are the only individuals that have covered the Yankees, Dodgers, and Giants. An interesting, but puzzling, story is told when Halberstam asked the general manager of a radio station in Talahassee, Florida, to arrange for him to spend a half hour with Red Barber. Barber was cordial, but could be cold with visitors. The author said he had so much to ask him. Just as he was warming up, Barber politely got up off his chair, shook the author's hand, and thanked him for coming. Thirty minutes were up, and it was time to go. If you enjoy the giants of the sports airwaves this book is a must for your reading, and deserves a prominent place in anyone's sports library.

David J. Halberstam (not to be confused with the more well-known David Halberstam) has written one of the best reference books ever on sports broadcasting, focusing on the history of radio play by play in New York City from its inception in the 20s to the present. Baseball, Football, Basketball, Hockey etc. are all given equal treatment in their own chapters, and while this can lead to occasionally repetitive information, that in no way detracts from the opportunity to enjoy this work. Only Curt Smith's "Voices Of The Game" has ever done anything similar to what Halberstam has done in this instance. I was glad to see Halberstam correct the injustice Smith's book did to the late Frank Messer by giving him due credit for his 18 years of outstanding work on the Yankees broadcast team (but I have to dissent from Halberstam's negative view of current Yankees voice John Sterling and think its not fair to cite one disgruntled anonymous letter to the Post as a bellwether of how Yankee fans feel about his work), and other voices of New York sports like Mel Allen, Red Barber, Marty Glickman, Marv Albert, Jim Gordon etc. also receive attention for their fine work over the years with various teams. Along the way you'll learn all kinds of fascinating trivia you never would have expected. Did you know Monty Hall of "Let's Make A Deal" spent a season as a Rangers color analyst in 1960? Or that the Mets were on one of the weakest stations in NY during their amazing run in 69? That's just the tip of some of the fascinating material you'll learn in this book. Bravo to David Halberstam for giving us this must-have reference guide that collectors of historic broadcasts me can never be without!

David Halberstam has compiled an exceptionally well written history of sports broadcasting in the Big Apple. His research is phenominal. The anecdotes that he has compiled make you just breeze through this great page turner. If you want a behind the scenes look at sports broadcasting this is the book for you! Halberstam's prose is witty and concise. Anyone would enjoy this book.

Interesting read. I was impressed with the research and many of the "behind the scenes" stories regarding so many of our great broadcasters from days gone by.

Having grown up in ny in the 40s and 50s listening to all the sports on the radio, this book was a great match to my interests. Like the author, I have a passion for sports broadcast history and have extensive data on the subject myself; to my pleasant suprise, I did not find a single factual inaccuracy in the entire book! The broadcast histories are the most comprehensive I've ever seen; moreover, the author brings to life the voices of ny sports with highly readable biographies and critiques; in terms of detail, this book goes far beyond anything ever published; anyone whose husband, father or grandfather grew up listening to the Stanley Cup champion Rangers (either the 1940 or 1994 version), Warm Up Time and Sports Extra, the Yankees, Dodgers and Giants, the Knicks (or even the New Jersey Americans, Brooklyn Tigers, the Golden Blades or the weekly fights at St Nick's Arena) should order this book and gift wrap it immediately; had I not already given this gift to myself, it would be the most appreciated gift I could imagine!

Mr. Halberstam has written a great book for someone doing a research project on a history of early radio. As a person growing up in the New York area, I found it very dry and, unfortunately, repetitive. Information from the section on World Series broadcasts was repeated in sections on the Dodgers, Giants, and Yankees. (Perhaps the author doesn't expect anyone will read it from cover to cover.)

My daughter had this book and now my grandniece does too. Babies love putting Cheerios in there place and looking at the fun colorful pictures.

These books are the stuff toddler dreams are made of! My 3 year old has loved his for a year and we recently gifted another book with a box of Cheerios to one of his playmates.

This book is a perfect restaurant or travel companion - just don't forget the Cheerios! The little slots for Cheerios are perfect and ingenious for little hands. The book is also a good size for a diaper bag or large purse. The only drawback, my little one ate more Cheerios than she placed on the book!

Kids didn't seem super into this book like I thought they would be. Maybe would be best for slightly younger kids? Mine played with them when just shy of 2 and just shy of 3.

Baby is too young to figure out how to put the cheerios in the correct spots, so for now we just play at picking them up and working on pincer grasp. He had the pincer grasp down at 7 months thanks to this book. It's a fun game for baby and helps him practice concentrating and focusing. I imagine this book will be just as fun when he gets old enough to understand how to put the cheerios in the little spots on each page.

This book is adorable! My daughter loved the Halloween book but since it's February we thought it might be time to get another one. The Halloween one has less Cheerios "required" on each page so this one is probably good for a second step. My daughter is 19 months and this will be perfect for holding her attention on each page longer.

Such a cute book! I bought this for my niece who LOVES Cheerios. So I thought this would be the perfect addition to snack time. What was a pleasant surprise were the little holes that help toddlers place the Cheerios in the right spot. And the pages are thick and sturdy. I can't wait to see her use it.

This is the best volume of the series I really enjoyed reading it and art is good "because I enjoy Lemire's art" I am not sure if I really liked the plot "twist" or not but the story telling was great. overall I enjoyed the series and I would suggest you to read the whole series I think it is one of the must haves

The final book of this series is by far the best and most tragic but good graphic novel I've read in a long time

was bit disappointing low qualty

I am going to be brief. This book is fantastic. It adds in some new elements that round out the story, while wrapping up earlier issues. The epilogue in particular was wonderful. The relationship between Gus and Jeppard comes full circle. If you made it this far you will want to finish the series off.

This is the best book of the three, the plot was very interesting from the beginning, I loved the "twist" and it was the first time I got emotional because of a graphic novel:) I think everyone should give it a try, in fact, I think graphic novels are underrated.

I read this book in a few days then re-read it. It took me 6 weeks to re-read this book. Only because I would watch the Godzilla movie then re-read the chapter about the movie to understand the geo-political, socio-ecominic, and cultural underpinning themes in each movie. This book correctly explains the late Showa period movies were not "chessy" but still had profound Japanese cultural references current to it's times when made.This book is a primer for any student to the rise and fall of the Japanese movie industry with Toho Studios as one of the last standing. The studio system of contract actors, producers, writers and directors to include Akira Kurosawa, product merchandising and vertical integration of studio to theaters is explained in detail in this book.The book is well layout in chronological of the Godzilla Movies with chapters dedicated to the American or Americanization of Godzilla Movies. It explains the re-editing of the Americanize versions to fit the Geo-Political climate at its time of release.If your a casual Godzilla Fan like me, or a serious fan of Godzilla who wants to learn more about the Big G, this book is for you. It should be on on your bookshelf.I hopefully look forward to the author's 3rd edition to include Shin Godzilla and the current American productions. Godzilla is the only 60 year old cross generation Movie Star that can connect Grand kids with Grand Parents and the generation in between.

This book was fantastic. The author provides a unique perspective on the specific cultural, historical, and ideological frameworks of Japan, Toho Studios, and even America that influence the making of each Godzilla movie up to Final Wars. While I didn't always agree with some of his more objective commentary on particular films, this book was very well-researched, and provided a superb companion for a chronological viewing of each Godzilla film. I would recommend this book to anyone with even a passing interest in Toho's Godzilla series, as it can only serve to enhance and increase one's enthusiasm for the undisputed King of Monsters.

Most of the book concerns itself with the cultural and business context for each movie, also going into the trends and styles of the major creative people behind the movies. It is about 20% an artistic analysis of the film's themselves. This is a great book for both learning about the history of the Godzilla movies, but also providing some new perspectives on what makes them important and interesting that you won't find from mainstream English language critics or through most fan discussions.

An extremely well written overview of all the Godzilla films (up to Godzilla Final Wars). Kalat has done his research and knows his stuff, but the fan in him shines through.My only complaints with this book are that it contains no photos from any of the movies (not the author's fault, as Toho wanted too much money for the rights), and as a revised, updated edition, the "Millennium" series of movies are covered more quickly.Still a great read for any G-Fan.

This is an amazing book and I am absolutely fascinated by it, from both the standpoint of a film buff as well as a Gojira fan. I certainly hope Mr. Kalat does a follow-up now that G is enjoying a rebirth in Japanese cinema (from Godzilla Millenium to GMK and beyond) and the book itself stops at Godzilla v Destroyah, his supposed "death" in Japan. (The plan was to turn the reins over to Tri-Star in the USA, but since the '98 American Godzilla stunk so very much, fans worldwide convinced Toho to revive it in their own image).Excellent book for both film fan and Godzilla lover. No pictures, no diagrams, no schlock; just great writing and amazing detail.

This is the best book on Godzilla movies I have ever read. The author is incredibly knowledgeable and obviously loves these movies. I highly recommend this book.

I am not a Godzilla fan (I don't dislike them; I am neutral towards them). But this book is amazing even if you don't care about the movies, because like them or not, Godzilla movies are an important part of our modern culture. This book is detailed, interesting, always enlightening, and very often hilarious to read. A great book can be a pleasure to read even for those who would not be interested in the subject. This is such a book.

A tremendous book. I would absolutely recommend it to anyone interested in Godzilla or its history. This is my favorite book on the Godzilla series, and if great for experts and beginniners to the alike.

This guy is really making good $$ w/ his hokey-pokey view of blood moons, or signs from nature to predict the 2 main things ppl are curious about - the end of the world & the 2nd coming. Ask yourself, if these blood moons are a great sign for Israel, why aren't there any books written by any Jewish member to support his claims? If u want to read articles that will refute his bloody moons, just google - "debunking the 4 blood moons or refuting the blood moons." Pick any of your choosing, & afterwards, u can decide if u want to buy this book. I wudn't waste my $$ on this book, or his 3 heavens crap either. If u want concepts of heaven & hell, read the Bible or pick a book from a more reliable source - Billy Graham!

I am astounded that people STILL give this book five stars when all of Hagee's predictions have now failed to come true and and his "theories" disproven. It is not even debatable: he lied! A poorly-written book that exploits people's fears about the end times to make money. If you don't believe what I'm saying, I invite you to read this book: End of the World Propheteers: Exposing the Truth about Apocalyptic Predictions and the Blood Moon Scam

I was somewhat disappointed with this book by Hagee. The majority of the book is not really spent discussing the four blood moons, but rather on a summation of end-time events and what is coming. Hagee would point out that you need that background to understand the significance of the four blood moons. While I understand his point, I would say only 35% of the book is spent on the four blood moons and that was my reason for buying the book. So, for me, the book was interesting and enjoyable when it talked about the four blood moons and great in that it points out another aspect of God's ultimate majesty, control, and awesomeness, but I could only rate it three stars as most of the book was an end time summary which I had already read in other books. So, it was enjoyable and disappointing all at the same time.

Bought this book when I heard that John Paul Jackson and Joni Lamb both endorse it. Hagee looks at NASA findings, scriptural references and historical eyewitness accounts and finds a huge connection between the appearance of blood moons to upheavals in Jewish history and to Israel, God's time clock.The end times may just be closer than we think and that the survival of our nation depends on our support of Israel and our honoring of the Jew. I appreciate how Hagee showcased eyewitness accounts during upheavals in Jewish history like the Temple destruction in 70 AD, the Spanish Inquisition and the 6-Day War. In 2014-2015 there will be a Tetrad in the skies, a succession of four blood moons or lunar eclipses and a solar eclipse in the middle so as another Jewish upheaval is at our door and the nations around Israel are spewing hate, Hagee asks if we are ready for an imminent Rapture and the end times? The only thing I wished this book had was listing organizations that support Israel and practical ways we can prepare for the times. I highly recommend this book to every follower of Christ and every bible study group out there.

I think Hagee shares too much of his own opinion and interprets the Bible his own way. His timing of the recent Shemitahs doesn't rightly (or 100%) line up with all of the events in American. He is also a solid believer in the Pre-tribulational Rapture...which I am not. This discounts for me some of the stuff he writes. Toward the end of the book, I was tending toward just taking with a grain of salt everything he said. Integrity is important to keep the reader hanging on. He has too many anomalies in this thinking. Just doesn't add up.

OK, now that Hagee's "theory" has been completely disproven, where's his retraction or public apology? Why is the book still on the market? The four blood moons and came and went... and nothing... no surprise, I predicted this in my own book, "End of the World Propheteers: Exposing the Truth about Apocalyptic Predictions and the Blood Moon Scam. Jesus said, "Only the Father [God] knows" the timetable.

Hagee is a compelling writer (far more than Biltz's Blood Moons book), and at times his enthusiasm is contagious. But despite his insistence that this work is based on Scripture, he has two glaring errors: (1) the Scriptures he notes have additional signs as well (such as the stars going dark) for which he does not account, and (2) nowhere does Scripture say that four consecutive lunar eclipses is significant--this is an occurrence he has decided must have importance due to its rarity. Furthermore, the Joel 2 and Revelation 6 prophecies seem to be speaking of a singular event, not a recurring event.I think Hagee means well, and do not doubt his sincerity. His influence from Biltz is clear and self-professed, but couple this with prophecy being his favorite subject matter and it's unfortunately clear he lacks the self-discipline to approach things critically.

I don't know what it is with Pastors. I have read books by a number of Pastors and they are flat!!! It is like they wrote them eighter for the money or they wanted people to know they were on top of everything pertaining to THE BIBLE. I listen to this pretrib nonsense that some of the greatest Christians Scholars state that the BIBLE does not support pretrib. We have known about the Blood Moons for six or seven years and at the last minute John writes a book on the Blood Moons. I think John is a Great Pastor, but this book is flat. The one thing I did appreciate was being able to see all of the Blood Moon tetrads and study the patterns. The first is a witness tetrad, the second is a world tetrad, the third is a Trinity tetrad and the fourth is a Trinity tetrad. Other words the third tetrad is about getting Jerusalem back and the forth we believe will be about building the Temple and obtaining more land for my Beloved Jewish Brothers and Sisters to return to Israel.

Receive this rental and due to the writing of the last person using it, you can barely see the text in the book. The person's writing is so distracting when you're trying to read what little of the text you can see.

I thought te text was easy to follow. The typos are typical in the early editions of textbooks. It is succinct and straight forward. The author took care to make it easy on the eyes and not super heavy or needlessly thick.

This text is not well written. At times it gives an adequate discussion of the material and at other times, it is very lacking. sometimes the end of chapter questions and discussion within the chapter do not line up. If you can avoid it, I do NOT recommend this text.

If you are truly serious about learning hematology for practical application, get a real textbook and leave this starter one for others.

The book was marked new. It arrived with SEVERAL bent pages.

First and foremost, the print quality is equivalent to brochure standard with clear color photographs, 3-D graphics and easy to read font style and size. The descriptions provide a color-coded overview of the area for easy selection of the areas of interest. The DK Choice recommendations are also very helpful and I selected Avignon and a farm house hotel in Avignon based on these recommendations. Finally, the history summary provides interesting background information of the various geographic locations and sites within a specific area. I recommend first-time potential purchasers compare DK to other travel guides and you will see for yourself some of the attributes of DK travel guides.

I gave it 3 stars as this book would not appeal to a lot of people. First of all it is not quick reading and secondly, a lot of people are not interested in the origin of names. I am because it is so interesting to learn that names we consider to be very Scots or English or Italian, or what ever , actually have their origins from the countries which invaded them. For instance, in the case of the Scots the country was invaded by the Romans, the Vikings, the French and one clan name has Flemish roots I learned. When the invaders stayed and intermarried, they left definite imprints of their culture which in turn became incorporated into the culture that was invaded.

There were some interesting facts about the major clans; however, I was hoping the book would list out the septs associated with each clan. I was disappointed to find my ancestral clan was not in the book. Nonetheless, it is a good jumping off point for those who are interested in Scottish clans and their historical significance.

This book has wonderful information regarding the history of many clans in Scotland. It discusses the families and some of their history. If possible, the information provided even leads up to current families and where they live. This is a book I can use for reference when reading about Scotland and its history. It provides great insight into the struggles this country, and its inhabitants, endured in the past.

All clans in one book with good details on each. Very well organize and set up for easy reading and understanding

So, I found a bit of history about the clan of my wife and my brother in low. Not too much though but that's not the aim of the book. It offers just basic information which for myself at this stage was fair enough.

This is a good book to see where your name originated from
