It's the silliest story, which is pretty fun, and it works. I bought the Kindle edition, and studied the first 10 for about 5 min. You can't get the visuals out of your head thereafter. And I can remember the order. This is exactly what the book advertisement said- memorize the periodic table. Now, if you want to be able to do it out of order, or recall other details, you need to do other things. But this is a great beginning. I highly recommend it for middle school and high school chemistry teachers. It's FUN!

This gem of a book contains a very high-quality mnemonic for the periodic table. The mnemonic is in the form of a strange story, kind of like a modern fairy tale, in which the characters and events represent the elements of the periodic table in order of atomic number. I used it to memorize the names and atomic numbers of the first 20 elements in about 20 minutes. A friend quizzed me afterwards and I got perfect.

Absolutely love this book. It's a fun way to memorize the elements in order. My 10 year old borrowed it and enjoyed it too. Highly recommend this book. I can't seem to hold on to it when sharing with young curious minds. I will be ordering this book again!

Highly publicized statements of recent years released by the Swatch Group have really done their job in getting other manufacturers going on movement productions of their own. Where just a few short years ago, one could count the number of manufacturers producing movements on two hands, today it is nearly impossible to keep up with the technological breakthroughs being achieved by creative companies situated at every level of the watch industry. This also applies to the complication that is generally acknowledged as the industry’s best and brightest: the tourbillon. Invented more than 200 years ago by Abraham-Louis Breguet to compensate for the effects of the earth’s gravity on a pocket watch’s rate, this traditional complication was kept alive by a handful of brands throughout the quartz years in wristwatches of uncommonly high quality and value. Perhaps it was Nicolas G. Hayek’s purchase of the then-dusty Breguet brand with the promise of reviving this complication on a broader scale, but since the complication on a broader scale, but since the complication’s highly publicized 200th anniversary in 2001, the number of brands incorporating the tourbillon into their own wristwatches has increased exponentially. While in 2001 there may have been fewer than fifteen companies to feature such a highlight in their collections, at last count in 2005 there were more than forty doing so. And some of the brands jumping on this “whirlwind bandwagon” are doing so without having first proved their horological competence or even built up to it by first presenting complications of less grandeur. An obvious question regarding the sheer number of tourbillon movements springing up remains: What type of place in the industry cant this type of tourbillon occupy? And where can things go from here? And that is the really interesting question. Where things go from here will, in our opinion, be in a totally different direction. Companies will begin to manufacture their own, more creative complications—different complications, creative technology that will not have Monsieur Breguet’s signature on it. And that is good for everyone. These complications don’t have to be, and won’t be, great or even important in the larger scheme of things. Companies won’t reinvent the wheel, but they will show that Switzerland and Germany’s watchmakers are staying on a mechanical roll. And this new phase has actually already begun. After having read and re-read Conor Lastowka's first novel, Gone Whalin', I understandably was eager to see if his newest novel would reach the same lofty heights of comedy. I'm happy to say it does-it pole vaults over the bar, in fact! Enh? Nothing? Tough crowd. At any rate, if you're a fan of zany misunderstandings, obscure cultural phenomenons, and possibly-cursed mascot costumes, this novel is definitely for you. Hilarious from beginning to end! Highly recommended!

Conor Lastowka's love of the absurd in prose shines in The Pole Vault Championship of the Entire Universe. The title itself informs you of what you're in for, and yet you keep getting surprised at how high he sets the bar (hey, look what I did there, total accident!) for the LOLs and clears it with every single attempt. From the first line of his second novel, Conor Lastowka has already established himself as being more clever, witty and charming than Douglas Adams and Kurt Vonnegut combined. Every single joke in this book is a winner, which is so rare in comedic prose these days. While shorter than his first (and fantastic) effort, Gone Whalin', Lastowka shows that he has learned lessons and improved dramatically with this one. It's funnier, snappier, and even more absurd, and yet you don't question any of it. This completely absurd world is also totally believable, you get sucked into it from the first page and you won't put it down until you're done and have to start counting the days until his next book that will blow your mind!

Conor Lastowka has written a truly great, masterful comedic tale. This book is highly entertaining, from both a comedic and literary stand point. It can be easy to write something 'funny' (I mean, plenty of people will laugh at a mediocre fart joke), but fail to make it 'good'. And, by 'good' I mean at least partially aesthetically pleasing, avoiding those pitfalls of poor prose, repetitive phrasing and vocabulary, and tired pacing. Having read Conor Lastowka's previous book "Gone Whalin'," I was looking forward to reading this one. It didn't disappoint. The author has a clear knack for creating truly absurd worlds, populating them with wildly oversize characters, and sending the reader careening through them in truly fantastic (and often quite silly) adventures. There's more than a little Douglas Adams in his writing, and I often found myself blurting laughter out loud in public as I came across an unexpected incident or turn of phrase. A really fun read, start to finish!

A very funny story about formerly dead grandfathers, Nazi-curious aliens, mascots imparting important life lessons, pirate radio shows with catchy titles, The King of Maui’s succulent pigs (extra crispy), runner’s diarrhea and so much more. As with his first novel, “Gone Whalin’,” Conor Lostowka made me laugh every few pages, and I had a great time reading this book. Check out his (and Mike Nelson’s) podcast, 372 Pages We’ll Never Get Back, and, of course, RiffTrax.

Hilarious second offering from an author worth watching. The characters and world created in The Pole Vault Championship of the Entire Universe kept me at least smiling the whole time.

This book is hilarious. Buy it right now if you're over the age of, let's say, 13, and like silly humor.

Very funny, light-hearted and clever. A great example of self-aware comedy writing. It is nice to go on an adventure so ridiculous that you don’t even need to suspend your disbelief, you just strap in to the spaceship and let it take you on a journey.

My husband and I just got back from Puerto Rico after having stayed at the Copamarina Beach Resort in Guanica and then at the Gallery Inn in Old San Juan. I found the guide helpful, but a little too enthusiastic in its descriptions. The book provides a lot of good information about hotels and restaurants that we might not have found without it. We rented a car to go to Copamarina. For a trip across the island, the map we got from Hertz was much more useful than the one included in the book.

An ideal guide. I pulled the map out of the back of the book and carried it with me while touring Old San Juan on foot for a short day on a cruise port stop. Combining info I found in the book along with a walking tour I found online - I charted a course for seeing as much of the city as I could. It was a long day but absolutely beautiful. I think I'm in love with Old San Juan and can't wait to go back. The guidebook was a valuable resource while planning my day trip to PR.

The map was helpful, otherwise, we found information to be wrong or outdated- or completely excluded. We got better "inside" information from the front desk of our hotel.

Great book, too bad we didn't get to use the information since our travel dates were 9/2017 and the hurricanes forced us to cancel the trip. With the damage to the island, obviously look for a reprint/revised edition of any San Juan travel guide.

While most of the information can be found online, this book did a nice job of putting everything in one place. The best part was that it lists hours for each attraction listed, which ended up being VERY helpful. I'd recommend for PR first-timers.

was a good reference and used during my visit to Pueto Rico. But of course it was not the only one, many others are need, and free ones can be picked up when you get there. But worth buying

Good book, however no pictures to enhance the reading.

This book is informative and helped us plan our trip to Puerto Rico. We are staying in Rincon and Vieques and got some good travel tips.
