Its intention may not be to critically help architects to achieve better philosophical design understanding but to show them wisdom (or make them wiser) in decision making and to be able to stand back and laugh to momentarily remove us from the stressfulness of our profession, thus allowing us to be back in being creative.
A must read for any architect. Individual articles give insight to all those things we have observed and experienced in our careers. A few articles are a bit long and pedantic, but informational none-the-less. Explains the history and reasoning about so many things that drive our practices, but that the public just doesn't comprehend.
Funny, enlightening to the industry and profession, as well as knowledgeable to the history of its changing craft. It took me a while to read because I researched a lot of the material in it, which really helped supplement my understood architecture. Overall, great book and would highly recommended. Learned a lot and got into a new hobby as well!
Parts of this book are hilarious. Parts are as dry as dust. I think it is worth a read as long as you are prepared to skip the boring bits. The ongoing description of trying to work in Russia was fascinating...

This book is unlike any architecture book I've ever read, in a great way. It's academic without being too didactic and anecdotal without being biographical. Reinier is an entertaining (and sometimes enjoyably cynical) narrator who scribes the stories behind buildings, clients, and practicing architects. I can imagine that this book will become one cherished within the profession and one recommended to anyone considering entering it.
This is the most amazing book I have read in years: an account of the changing state of the architecture profession over the last decades.A collection of short stories that go from deeply sad to exceedingly funny, but invariably manage to feel brutally honest. De Graaf is acutely aware of the issues of our time and utterly fearless in articulating them.
