This book from artist and teacher Lian Quan Zhen is a guide on combining traditional Chinese painting and modern watercolour techniques. An interesting premise. The book includes 12 demonstrations and 17 step-by-step tutorials. Those examples are quite detailed and you can clearly see what's going on. Quite amazing to see how he turns mundane looking reference photos into beautiful works. With Chinese painting, rules are more relaxed. For instance, there's no so called perspective points, or even vanishing lines. Modern watercolour techniques are more of representational drawings, and focus on getting the proportions right. Of course, within each style, there are many other details like the tools you use, how to handle brushes. All those are mentioned in the book. It's refreshing to see how a scene is interpreted with Chinese painting methodology, and using that mindset to draw from observation. For example while Chinese painters would pour black into to make masses, watercolours can also be mixed and poured. What the author says about spontaneous style is true. It's important to break out of the comfort zone and try new methods. With representational drawing, it can be sometimes difficult because you want to capture what you see, at least with the right proportion. The downside of the book is sometimes the examples are not so clear cut as to the combination of techniques. Well, the Chinese paintings fused with watercolours are alright. As for the some of the modern watercolour paintings examples, it's difficult to see that they are Chinese influenced or made with Chinese painting techniques. At times, it's hard to feel the spontaneity of the Chinese style. I'm saying this because I've seen that kind of spontaneity in an artist friend who mixes the East and West style brilliantly, combining colours with bold blacks (watercolour artist seldom use black), using flat washes or dry brush effortlessly in the same painting. You actually have to see it to realise that this kind of combination techniques are actually possible. Also, Chinese paintings are sometimes quite minimalistic, but most of the examples are the fill-the-page type. I wish there were more coverage on using white space.Overall, it's still an interesting book to get if you want to learn and practice some Chinese paintings techniques for your watercolours. I recommended it to artists who are more adventurous and don't mind some experimental fun.(There are more pictures of the book on my blog. Just visit my Amazon profile for the link.)

I was so anxious to see this book that I pre-ordered it months before it was released. There are many interesting facts in the book, particularly the descriptions of the different styles of Chinese history and their origins ... but the instructive portions of the book were not as helpful as I had hoped. It is still worth reading and Zhen is a truly gifted artist but it is not as instructive for artists as I expected.

I've been checking out his other books from the library. The libraries near me, in Los Angeles, only have only the digital version for this edition. I like looking at the actual book, so I have decided to order it.

I purchase one other book from this artist and liked his painting technique.Great book for learning landscape painting.

Liam never disappoints. He does everything with flair and beauty. The combination of watercolor and Chinese brush painting is fabulous and the readers is left wanting to try duplicate each and every page. He gives detailed instruction and makes the reader feel they too can do this. Love his work and thankful for yet another beautiful book.

I love Chinese landscape. The book teaches painting techniques in great detail. It has many lovely paintings and painting lessons from the author. It really makes me want to just learn all I can to be able to do something like these.

This may be my favorite painting book by Llian Quan Zhen. Beautiful examples and clear instructions.

Having been a student of Zhen's at a workshop, reading this book is a visual reminder of the techniques that I learned. Zhen is gifted and provides good instruction and techniques.

"The solar universe or solar system is frequently referred to as cosmos and the galactic universe or our own home-universe to refer to as the kosmos." Cosmos, a Theosophical definitionKosmos Vs Cosmos:Whenever theosophists speak of the cosmos or the universe, they by no means refers only to the physical sphere or cross-section of the boundless World. All in which humans live, but more integrally to the invisible worlds and spheres inhabited by their countless hosts of animate beings. To avoid confusing expressions in the course of an elaboration dealing with other matters, it has been traditional, since Blavatsky's times, among theosophical writers to draw a distinction of fact between cosmos and kosmos. The solar universe or solar system is frequently referred to as cosmos and the galactic universe or our own home-universe is referred to as the solar kosmos. The Road to Reality:While Dr. Laughlin, Nobel Prize laureate in Physics, argues in his 'A Complete Guide to the Laws of the Universe', that we should focus our attention, instead of chaos theory to the deceptively simple geometry of Pythagorus and the ancient Alexandrines, rather than those cumbersome imaginary theories as Cauchy-Riemann functions, topographical surfaces, and the nature of space-time, which are complex material generally out of the reach of most readers. Harvard physicist Randall does a very admirable job of explaining with the help of creative analogies, in her 'Warped Passages,' how our universe may have many unseen dimensions! From atom to Kosmos:In a Journey without end, From atom to Kosmos, Theosophist author Gordon Plummer takes a simple course through the theosophical universe, proposing such above mathematical sophistication should be replaced by a simple Holistic approach. The bulk of the book is then devoted to cosmological theories with theosophical; deductions that do not need a String theory postulating units so infinitesimal to be detected, still could tell you how the Kosmos is held together. In simple English, this book outlines in modern astronomical terms; 'A super universe theory' and relates it to the ideas and concepts revealed by Ancient Wisdom. The author opens the reader to universal powers latent in man, powers far greater that any psychic abilities. Offers a riveting condensation of the ancient wisdom. He also reviews astronomy's speculation about one stupendous 'Super Universe,' a speculation that coincides with the wisdom essence of the author's study of half a century, delving into the inner mysteries of the Kosmic world.

Some Writer!: The Story of E. B. White (Ala Notable Children's Books. All Ages), by Melissa Sweet

From School Library Journal

Gr 3–7—Throughout his life, E.B. White (1899–1985) divided his time between New York City and Belgrade Lakes in Maine. He drew inspiration for his books from the bucolic setting near author Sweet's own home and studio. Readers and writers will relate to stories of White's childhood—he was "scrawny" and "fearful" but in love with words. As a child, he contributed short pieces to magazines, winning awards for his studies of nature, dogs, and his family. Some of his youthful creations, such as essays, poetry, and a handmade brochure, are included. Readers may be surprised to find that "Andy" spent his adult years at The New Yorker working with writers like John Updike and James Thurber and that his most ubiquitous book may actually be The Elements of Style. Much of the information on White's adulthood is organized in the volume by his major children's publications. Portions of handwritten and typed drafts of Charlotte's Web will serve as inspiration for young writers. The book is illustrated in Sweet's signature watercolor and collage, which incorporates wood and hardware, vintage office supplies, and quotes from White. Detailed tableaux invite careful inspection and reward readers with connections to the subject's work. Photos of the author and the animals upon which he based his stories will delight readers. In addition to providing carefully chosen words and beautiful illustrations, the biography serves as a stealthy introduction to primary source material, and for the teacher librarian, the text is a rich source of nonfiction features, including a how-to on using a manual typewriter. An afterword by White's granddaughter is an added bonus. VERDICT Drop everything and share widely.—Deidre Winterhalter, Niles Public Library, IL

Best book I've read in a while! I love the scrapbook-type format, and am especially glad to see that there are plenty of examples of E. B. White's actual writing in here. It is great for my daughter to see that a famous author did lots of revisions, wasn't perfect, kept on trying, etc. I'll definitely be giving this as a gift too!

I might have bought this book just because of the cover. Then, the description of how a manual typewriter works, followed a few pages later by an excerpt about a boy and his dog, oh my! The entire book feels like poetry, art, history, and your favorite uncle's best stories all clustered together. The fact that the reader learns all kinds of interesting details about an amazing writer is almost a bonus.

All I knew about E.B. White was that he wrote "Charlotte's Web." After reading this book, I know him much better, and I feel great affection for him, even love. What a wonderful man he was...wise, humble and kind. And indeed, "Some Writer!"He started out in his profession as a writer of essays for adults at The New Yorker. Much later he became a writer for children after his long affiliation with animals of all kinds on his farm. He was especially fond of one particular pig, He also became fascinated with the ways of the common grey spider, and from these two critters, he wove the story of Charlotte's Web. The "story of the story," you might say, just a small portion of this book, is simply captivating. This book is filled with illustrations, photos, letters, and quotes to help us get to know this fine gentleman. Melissa Sweet has put together the most engrossing biography I have ever read. For example, did you know that White's book, "Stuart Little," was banned from libraries when it was first published? This and many other interesting tidbits are included in the biography. This book was written for ages 7 to 10. I am 65 years old. I think this wonderful book will appeal to readers all ages.Yes, E.B. White was Some Writer. Melissa Sweet is a good writer too, and she is Some Illustrator! I am looking forward to reading "The Right Word, Roget and His Thesaurus," written by Jen Bryant and illustrated by Melissa Sweet. Other books by E.B. White, including "The Elements of Style," with William Strunk Jr., and "Stuart Little" along with a long overdue reread of "Charlotte's Web", are also calling my name.I'll end this review with a four-word quote from a poultry primer written by E. B. White years ago. It could be a timeless formula for life for us all:"Be tidy. Be brave."

The perfect biography. It is short and sweet. It does not spend 600 pages telling you what the subject had for breakfast in 1947. It gives you the heart of EB White's life in a few short chapters. It uses plenty of quotations from White's own writings. It illuminates the subject.

E.B. White is my favorite author and I was so excited knowing this book was coming out that I pre-ordered it. The author did not disappoint! I love all the pictures and information about him. Thank you Ms. Sweet for doing such a remarkable job on this!

Every image, every word of this story should be savored. Even if you're not an aspiring writer, you'll be inspired by EB White's story told and depicted so beautifully you almost want to cry. I'd give this book to any young writer, and maybe to the older ones as well.

I gave this as a Christmas gift to two people. One was a child. I asked him to read Charlotte's Web and Stuart Little first, so haven't had a full review from him but he liked the layout of the pages. The other was an adult woman and artist who absolutely loved the book -- the creative pages with distinct art work and story line. She liked the fact she could pick it up at any time and read a page or two, keeping up with the story.

You will NEVER read a more beautifully written and illustrated book (Melissa Sweet is AMAZING)! This book is a joy to read - to look at - to be inspired by. I loved it!
